Calantha paced back and forth in her room, glancing at the clock for what felt like the hundredth time.
Where was that maid? She had sent her on a simple errand to fetch some flowers, and yet she had been gone for hours.
She made her way to Katharina’s room, wondering if her sister might know something about the maid’s whereabouts.
Calantha entered into Katharina’s room, her eyes scanning the room for any sign of her sister. That’s when she saw Elara, the maid, rummaging through Katharina’s wardrobe.
Elara’s hands were shaking as she tried to pull off the princess’ gown since they exchanged outfits. Her eyes moved fearfully towards the door when she heard the door opened and Calantha approached her.
“Elara, what are you doing?” Calantha demanded
Elara’s eyes widened in fear as she realized she had been caught. She tried to hide, but Calantha’s eyes was fixed on her.
“Where’s Katharina? And why are you wearing her dress?”
Elara’s eyes dropped, and she trembled.
“I-I was just…trying on some clothes, Your Highness. I didn’t mean to cause any trouble”
“Don’t lie to me, Elara. I know you’re hiding something. Where is Katharina?”
“I don’t know, Your Highness. I swear”
“Wait a minute” Calantha suddenly said as she tried to remember something,her eyes widening each minutes.
“Don’t tell me you helped Katharina to escape!” Calantha exclaimed and Elara swallowed nothing.
“No-no your Highness” Elara quickly said and Calantha grabbed her by the neck almost choking her and Elara gasped for air.
“Tell me the truth now! Did you exchange outfits? Was that maid I sent to get some flowers for me, my sister in disguise? Answer me!” Calantha yelled and she released her hold on her and Elara coughed out.
“Tell me what I need to know now or I will involve the King and Queen” Calantha threatened and Elara quickly went on her knees with tears in her eyes.
“It was her idea please, she begged me to help her because she didn’t wish to marry the prince. Please don’t tell Your Majesty” Elara pleaded.
“No wonder I felt something was suspicious about that maid not knowing it’s my sister! You are in big trouble, Elara”
Calantha dragged Elara into the King and Queen’s chambers, her grip on her strong. Elara pleaded and begged, but Calantha gave a deaf ear to it.
They finally got to the king’s quarter and the guards outside stopped them.
“I need to see my father!” She demanded.
“I’m sorry but the king said no one is allowed to come in again” the guard said and her frustration grow.
“This is important! Father!” Calantha kept yelling and Elara couldn’t stop crying uncontrollably,she knows she’s done for and have accepted her fate.
The door suddenly opened revealing the king,he made to talk but Calantha was faster as she dropped the bombshell.
“Katharina ran away, Father. And her maid helped her escape.”
The King face froze in shock, his eyes wide with disbelief.
“What?! How could this happen?!” the King thundered.
“Please, Your Majesty, I had no choice! Katharina begged me to help her, and I couldn’t resist”
The King’s face turned red with rage. “Take Elara away to the dungeon now! No food, no water, until I know what to do to her!”
The guards dragged Elara away, her screams echoing as she was dragged away.
The King turned to Calantha.
“Summon the guards. Search every inch of the kingdom. Bring Katharina back to me tonight, unfailingly!”
Calantha nodded.
“Yes, Father. I’ll make sure it’s done.”
“I want my daughter back, and I want her back now. No one defies me and gets away with it!”
The guards quickly left to search for Katharina, and the King’s chambers became busy with activity. The King’s loud voice echoed throughout the palace, showing his great anger.

NEXT MORNING, SOMEWHERE IN NEW YORK*
As soon as a truck stopped, Katharina quietly got out. She saw the driver and another man talking, not looking at her or even noticing her. She quickly ran away, her legs shaking.
She looked around, seeing many buildings and bright lights. She heard cars honking and people talking.
Katharina kept running, not knowing where she was going. But she knew she had to keep moving. She didn’t want anyone to catch her.
As she ran, She thought about her family, the kingdom and most especially Elara,hoping she’s not in trouble for her actions. She suddenly felt alone and scared, but she kept running.
She didn’t know what would happen next, but she was ready to face it.
As Katharina ran, her mind went to the previous night and how she escaped.
She actually stumbled upon a truck who seems to be going to New York to deliver some goods and so she find her way in, hiding among the goods, and holding on for dear life as it drove away from the kingdom. It was a risky move, but she had no other choice.
She had to keep moving, find a safe place to hide, and start a new life.
As Katharina walked, people couldn’t help but stare at her. She was dressed in a maid’s uniform, with a long cloak flowing behind her. It was an unusual sight in the city of New York.
Passersby pointed and whispered, their eyes fixed on her strange attire. Some took out their phones to take pictures, thinking she was a street performer or a cosplayer.
Katharina didn’t notice at first, but as she turned a corner, she caught a glimpse of herself in a store window. She stopped short, taken aback by her reflection.
The maid’s uniform and cloak looked out of place indeed. She needed to blend in, and fast.
Katharina walked into a nearby small store, hoping to find something to wear. She scanned the racks, her eyes settling on a simple t-shirt and jeans. But as she reached for them, she realized she had no money.
“I don’t even have any money with me” she sighed.
Just then, a kind-faced woman approached her.
“Hey, are you okay? You look lost” The woman asked and Katharina hesitated, unsure what to say.
“I…I just need some clothes. But I don’t have money”
The woman nodded understandingly.
“Well, I think we can help you out. Let me get you a few things”
And with that, she handed Katharina a t-shirt, jeans, and a warm jacket.
“Don’t worry about it, sweetie. Just be safe”
“Oh thank you so much ma’am,I really appreciate it” Katharina thanked her.
“It’s okay,I just feel you needed it. I’m Mrs Gray by the way and what’s yours?”
“Prin…” Katharina quickly stopped her self,she almost said ‘Princess Katharina’
“I’m Katharina” she replied.
“Oh okay. I don’t know but I just feel like helping you, this must be your first time here if I should judge by your dressing and how everything looks strange to you”Mrs Gray said and Katharina nodded.
“Do you have anywhere to stay?”
“No I don’t ma”
“I live alone at my apartment with my little daughter,will you like to come live with me?” She asked and Katharina eyes widened.
“You don’t mean it?”
“Of course I do,you look helpless”
“I will really love that ma,thank you so much”
“Come on and let me treat you to a nice food at a restaurant nearby” Mrs Gray said and Katharina stomach rumbled,she just realised that she’s super hungry.
“Thank a lot ma”
“It’s okay,you should change your outfits first. Go into that changing room” she pointed to a door and Katharina went in.

SPRINGDALE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL*
Hazel was in class when their class teacher, Miss Johnson’s came in with a girl.
“Class, please welcome Emily. She’s joining our class today”
Emily looked around shyly, her worn clothes and tangled hair shows that she’s not from a wealthy home, not to compare with the neat uniforms and tidy hairstyles of the other students.
Miss Johnson gestured to an empty seat beside Hazel.
“Emily, you can sit right here next to Hazel”
Hazel’s face scrunched up in distaste immediately.
“Uh-uh, I don’t want her to sit beside me”
“Hazel, we’re all friends in this classroom. We make everyone feel welcome” Mrs Johnson said.
Hazel crossed her arms, her face set in a stubborn expression.
“But she doesn’t match us. She’s…different”
The classroom fell silent, with all eyes on Hazel and Emily. Emily’s eyes dropped down in shame.
“Hazel, we don’t judge people by how they look or dress. We treat everyone with kindness and respect. Emily, please take your seat”
Emily hesitated, then slowly made her way to the empty seat beside Hazel, who turned away, her face set in a scowl.
“You’ll regret sitting next to me, Emily. I’m not like the others. I’m trouble and everyone knows that, and I’ll make your life miserable”
Emily’s eyes widened, taken aback by Hazel’s harsh words. She looked uncertainly at Miss Johnson, who was busy writing on the whiteboard, seemingly oblivious to what Hazel just said.
“You’ll wish you never sat beside me. I’ll make sure of it” Hazel whispered into her ears and Emily shivered in fear.

AT A RESTAURANT*
Katharina ate her burger and fries eagerly, her eyes closed in enjoyment. Mrs. Gray sat across from her, smiling.
“I’m glad you’re enjoying your meal. You must have been very hungry”
Katharina nodded, taking another bite.
“Thank you for helping me, Mrs. Gray. I didn’t know how hungry I was until now.”
“So, what brought you to New York?”Mrs Gray asked.
Katharina hesitated, then looked down at her plate, avoiding eye contact. She didn’t respond, instead focusing on her food.
Mrs. Gray seemed to understand and didn’t press the issue.
“That’s okay, dear. You don’t have to tell me anything you don’t want to. Just know you’re safe now” Mrs Gray said and Katharina smiled appreciatingly.
Just then, the door to the restaurant swung open and a tall, handsome man walked in, accompanied by a stern-looking guard. Everyone attention turned on him immediately as they kept talking all at once.
Katharina’s eyes widened as she stared at the man, her spoon clattering to the floor. She felt like she was staring at a work of art, mesmerized by his beauty.
“Oh my…he’s…he’s like a Greek god!”
