NIGHT~ OUTSKIRTS OF VALDORIA KINGDOM*
Elara slowly opened her eyes, finding herself in an unfamiliar room. She was lying on a soft bed, surrounded by clean walls and a warm fireplace.
But how did she get here? She remembered being in the palace dungeon, awaiting execution. Then, a mysterious figure freed her… but everything after that was a blank. She recalled feeling faint and passing out.
Who was the person who freed her? And how did they get her out of the palace? Elara’s mind raced with questions, but she had no answers.
Elara got up and tried to open the door, but it wouldn’t budge. She tried again and again, but it was locked. She felt weak and tired, and finally gave up. She went back to bed, feeling trapped.
As she lay down, she saw a plate of food on the floor. It was a simple bread and stew but it looked like heaven to her.
She immediately grabbed the food and started eating hungrily.
Just as Elara finished her meal, the door creaked open by itself. She looked up, startled, and her eyes widened in shock.
“My prince!” She exclaimed.
NEXT DAY~NEW YORK, CITY HOSPITAL*
Katharina walked into the hospital and she approached a nurse at the reception desk, immediately.
“Please, I need to see Mr. Marcus” she said.
The nurse looked up from her paperwork.
“I’m sorry, Miss…?”
“Katharina”
“Miss Katharina, but Mr. Marcus is not allowed visitors. He’s in critical condition and needs rest”
“Please, I just need to see him. Just for a minute” she pleaded, her voice cracking.
“I’m sorry, Miss Katharina. I can’t make any exceptions” she shook her head and Katharina sighed sadly.
Hazel walked into the hospital lobby, wearing her school uniform with Mason and Madison, behind her. Hazel’s eyes suddenly met with Katharina and it widened.
“The lady I saw with Dad!” Hazel exclaimed and Mason and Madison looked confused.
“Hazel, what are you talking about?” Madison asked But Hazel ignored her question and ran to Katharina.
“It’s you ,it’s really you! You’re the lady I saw with my dad at school! You’re so pretty!”
Katharina recognised her immediately from yesterday night, Marcus’ daughter, but she’s so confused on what she’s saying now.
“Uh, thank you” she said.
“I’m Mr. Marcus’ daughter, the man you were talking to at my school the other day,the CEO of Blackwood Wine Company” Hazel said with so much pride, grinning from ear to ear and Katharina remembered that day, immediately.
Mason and Madison walked over to them looking so confused.
“Hazel, what’s going on?” Mason asked.
“Don’t interfere” she glared at Mason before turning back to Katharina with a smile on her face.
“You are here to visit my dad right?” She asked and Katharina nodded.
“Same here! Come with us” she grabbed Katharina’s hand, leading her to Marcus ward with the twins following behind, looking so confused.
Hazel dragged Katharina to the hospital ward, the twins trailing behind. As they entered the room, Katharina’s eyes met Marcus’, who was lying in bed with a newspaper in hand. Williams, his best friend, stood beside him. They seem to be in a serious conversation but that stopped, when they came in.
“Dad!” Hazel exclaimed, running to her father’s bedside.
“She’s the lady I saw with you at my school the other day, she’s here to greet you”
Marcus’ eyes shifted from Hazel to Katharina.
“Ah, Katharina. What a surprise” he said.
“I just said I should come check up on you” she said and he smiled, Mason and Madison couldn’t believe what they were seeing. Who’s this woman to make their brother smile this way when he never did that in front of Natalie.
“I really appreciate it” he said.
“Who’s this lady?” Williams asked, looking at Katharina.
“She’s my dad’s friend”Hazel quickly said.
“Oh really? Marcus,you never told me that you have a pretty lady as your friend” Williams teased and Katharina smiled shyly.
“Just leave already, Williams” Marcus said groaning.
“Fine I will” he said and got up,his eyes meeting with Madison who quickly moved away her eyes.
“We are leaving too,we only came to see how you are doing” Mason said and Marcus nodded smiling.
“Let’s go Hazel” Madison grabbed her hand.
“Take care of my dad!” Hazel said before they finally exited the room leaving Katharina and Marcus.
“I’m so sorry about yesterday, Natalie can be so annoying. I couldn’t stop her from sending you away and I feel bad about it” he said and Katharina walked closer to him.
“It’s totally fine,I’m just glad you are okay” she said and he smiled.
“Can I know more about this pretty lady before me?” He asked and she blushed red.
“There’s nothing to know about me, Marcus,I’m just a girl named Katharina”
“Ah, humble and beautiful,I like that about you, Katharina. You’re a mystery, and I love solving mysteries”
Katharina’s eyes met Marcus’ ,her soul stirring with emotions.
“I think there’s more to you than you’re letting on, Katharina, But I’m willing to wait for you to open up to me”
“You think so?”
“Yeah. I just don’t know why I feel so drawn to you ever seen I saw you that day at the park in my car. I’ve never felt like this to a woman since my wife died”
“What happened to your late wife?”
“She died while birthing Hazel,it was a painful day for me” he said, his eyes glassy already and Katharina heart went to him.
“So sorry about that”
“Hey it’s okay,I’m fine now”
“Um…How’s your health now?”
“Much better but the side of my stomach hurts a lot” he said wincing in pain as his hand instinctively reached for his stomach.
“Ah, damn it” he muttered, his face pale.
Katharina rushed to his side, her eyes scanning his face.
“What’s wrong?” she asked.
Marcus’ eyes met hers, and he hesitated for a moment before pulling up his shirt to reveal a bandaged stomach. Katharina’s eyes widened as she saw the extent of the injury.
“Oh, Marcus” she exclaimed, her hand reaching out to touch the bandage.
As she leaned in closer, their eyes locked, none able to look away. They were so close, their faces inches apart, and Katharina could feel the warmth of Marcus’ breath on her skin.
Slowly, they leaned in closer, their lips almost touching, when suddenly, the door burst open.
