CHAPTER 52
Juliet stood in front of Cookie’s door, her heart pounding in her chest.
She knocked softly, each tap of her knuckles against the wood sending a tremor of anxiety through her.
She clutched her laptop closer to her side, the metal edge digging into her ribs, grounding her in the moment.
The silence that followed felt endless. She stared at the door, willing it to open, but when no sound came from within, she raised her hand to knock again.
Just as her knuckles were about to brush the door, it swung open, revealing the last person she wanted to see. Regina!
Regina’s presence filled the doorway, her silhouette sharp and unwelcoming.
Juliet’s heart sank. She glanced over Regina’s shoulder, her eyes searching the dim interior for any sign of Cookie, her desperation rising like a tide.
Regina’s voice cut through the stillness, cold and biting.
“You again? What exactly do you want?” She leaned against the doorframe, her posture making it clear that Juliet was not welcome.
Juliet swallowed hard, her throat tight.
“I came for my sister. Is she home?” Her voice trembled slightly, the words rushing out in a breath.
She wasn’t entirely sure if Cookie was truly her sister, but something deep inside told her it was true. But still, she needed answers.
Regina’s eyes narrowed as she scanned Juliet from head to toe, her gaze sharp and appraising, like a predator sizing up its prey.
“And you are?” she hissed, her tone dripping with disdain.
“She’s my sister. I need to see her. It’s important. Is she home?” Juliet’s voice quickened, the urgency palpable as she tried to get the words out before Regina could shut her down.
Regina paused, a wicked smile playing on her lips as she considered this new information.
Cookie had a sister? This could be useful.
“She’s not,” Regina replied curtly, her tone flat and dismissive.
She moved to close the door, but Juliet quickly stepped forward, wedging her foot in the gap.
“Please, I really need to speak to her. It’s really important,” she pleaded, her voice catching with desperation.
Regina scoffed, her lips curling into a sneer.
“Which part of ‘she’s not home’ didn’t you hear?”*she snapped, her voice rising with irritation.
“Get lost and don’t show your face here again.” With that, she slammed the door shut, the sound echoing in Juliet’s ears like a gûnshot.
Inside, Regina smirked to herself as she crossed the living room, her heels clicking against the floor.
She picked up her phone, her fingers dancing across the screen as she dialed their big boss.
This was going to earn her some serious points in the clan.
Outside, Juliet stood frozen on the doorstep, the rejection stinging like a slap to the face.
What now? She asked herself, her mind racing. Should she go home? Yes, home. Right. Jennifer’s room needed to be rearranged.
Numbly, she turned and walked away, her thoughts a tangled mess as she made her way down the street.
