Dante patted him on the back, and Richard smiled—a rare sight for him.
They chatted as father-in-law and son-in-law before Dante left. Richard stayed with Kathryn until she fell asleep, and when he returned to his room, Kristin was already awake.
“Forevermore,” he said, rushing to her and holding her hand. “Are you alright? Your dad told me about your bad experience with pools. I’m sorry I didn’t save you sooner.”
Kristin smiled and cupped his flawless face. “You saved me just in time, or I’d have been dead.”
“What are the names of those bullies who pushed you in middle school? Tell me, and I’ll make them regret it.”
Kristin laughed lightly, still shaken by the pool incident.
“All I want is for you to cuddle me to sleep. Will you do that for me?” she asked softly.
Richard smiled, ruffled her hair a little, and laid down beside her. Kristin wrapped herself around him, using his chest as a pillow.

Adriana came downstairs the following morning for breakfast and sat down with her dad in the dining hall.
“Good morning, Dad,” she smiled innocently.
“Morning, Adriana.”
“Nice breakfast,” she said, beginning to eat, while Julio stared at her.
“What happened last night, Adriana? Richard and Kristin left the party wet. I tried inquiring about it, but you said you needed to sleep. Now that you’re awake, tell me what happened.”
“I’m not the bad guy here, Dad. I didn’t know Kristin couldn’t swim, and I didn’t even push her into the pool intentionally,” Adriana said, wearing an innocent face.
“Are you sure?”
Adriana could tell from the look in Julio’s eyes that he didn’t believe her, and when she saw Ophelia approaching, she started crying.
“I already told you the truth, Dad! Why can’t you believe me? Do you think I would push someone into the pool? I’m not that heartless, Dad.”
“What’s going on here?” Ophelia asked as she approached them.
“It’s Dad. He thinks I deliberately pushed Kristin into the pool,” Adriana sobbed.
“Why would you accuse my daughter?” Ophelia demanded.
“I was only asking a question,” Julio responded, still trying to make sense of Adriana’s sudden reaction to his inquiry.
“Why ask me when I’ve already told you the truth? I know I was gone for twenty years, but that doesn’t mean I became a bad person! I just want you to trust me. Maybe I should go back to Chicago!” Adriana cried as she rushed upstairs.
“Adriana!” Ophelia called after her and then immediately turned to face Julio.
“What are you doing?”
“I didn’t do anything! Can’t I just make sure she’s telling the truth?”
“She already told you the truth! What more do you want? It’s time you wake up, Julio! Richard isn’t our son, but Adriana is, and you need to treat her better.
You’re the reason she got lost in the first place!” Ophelia snapped at Julio before going upstairs to comfort Adriana.
Meanwhile, a smile crept onto Adriana’s face as she entered her room.
“You’re such a good actress, Adriana,” she said to herself. “You managed to fool that old man into thinking you didn’t push Kristin into the pool.
