Kristin blushed deeply. Playing with the tip of her dark hair, she replied, “I’ve heard that line before.”

“From me?”

“Yes.”

“I already told you, you’re beautiful?” he asked. Kristin nodded.

“When?”

“You have to figure it out yourself. But can you say it again?”

“Say what?” he whispered, his lips curved into a smile, his eyes on her face.

“You know…” Kristin licked her lips and continued, “the last word you just said.”

“Say what?”

“No.”

“But that was the last word I said.”

“Not that. The words before it.”

“You’re beautiful?” Richard asked, and Kristin nodded, smiling; she loved it when Richard said she is beautiful.

“Say it again,” she said in a babyish voice, blushing.

Richard slipped his hand to her waist, lifting her from the table and carefully laying her on the bed, his body on top of hers.

“What are you doing?” Kristin whispered, turning her eyes sideways, though she was smiling.

“What do you think I want to do?” he whispered back, brushing a strand of hair from her face.

“I don’t know,” she smiled.

“Can I kiss you?” Richard asked after a brief silence between them.

Kristin gazed into his eyes and slowly nodded with a smile.

Richard’s lips met Kristin’s in a slow, tender kiss, and when their lips collided, they felt as if the world had ended.

They felt safe with each other as their lips savored a sweet, lingering kiss.

“You should be thankful you’re still alive!” Julio’s voice came from the hospital ward.

“I should be thankful? That devilish son of yours almost killed me!” Ophelia raged, feeling a slight pain from her stab wound.

She had woken up already, while Lewis remained unconscious.

“You kidnapped his wife, and you expect him to stay calm? When are you going to stop?!”

“Until I find my daughter and you stop treating him like your son! Because he is not,” Ophelia yelled.

“You should’ve just stayed unconscious rather than waking up. I’m out of here,” Julio stormed out. And just after he left, Parker entered the ward.

“Richard really stabbed you?” Parker asked.

“That’s not the main issue. You said you finally found something about Kristin. What did you find?” she asked.

“She’s from Glenwood; I was right, she’s a farmer’s daughter.”

“Just that?”

“There’s more.” Parker paused, and Ophelia, curious, waited to hear what he had to say.

“Kristin isn’t as innocent as she claims.”

“Break it down,” Ophelia commanded.

“She has a child,” Parker said.

“Child as in…?”

“Kristin got pregnant after a one-night stand with a man on the night of her freshman party at her new college in the Philippines; she is a single mom with a six-year-old daughter,” Parker broke the news.
