Gladys added more adobos to Kathryn’s plate, and she grinned with her missing teeth.
“How long has Kristin been in Las Vegas?” Romina asked.
“Going on two months now. You know the only blue-collar job here is farming. She barely graduated from school, and we couldn’t afford to pay our debts.
Kristin took it upon herself to make a living, which is why she went to Las Vegas. You both are best friends, aren’t you on talking terms?” Gladys asked.
“No, we haven’t. I’ve been too busy working as a nurse in Singapore, and the little time I have, I take care of Kathryn. When she calls, I’m busy, and the time difference makes it impossible for us to talk,” Romina explained.
“And your mom?”
“Still not on speaking terms. She was the first person I informed about my return, but she didn’t seem to care. I came back because of Kathryn.”
“Why? Is everything okay with her?” Gladys asked worriedly, her eyes on Kathryn, who was eating.
Romina sighed and began to speak. “She’s been having nightmares, calling out for her daddy. At first, I ignored it, but it didn’t stop.”
Gladys and Dante both sighed.
“You already know Kristin doesn’t know the man who got her pregnant,” Gladys said in Filipino so Kathryn wouldn’t understand what they were saying.
Although Dante and Romina understood. Being from the Philippines, Gladys had taught both Dante and Kristin her language, while Kristin had taught Romina.
“I know, but Kristin can’t sleep without asking for her father. She is at a stage where she needs both her mom and dad,” Romina replied in Filipino.
“Grandpa, when am I going to see my mummy? I miss her,” Kathryn asked, unaware of what they were saying.
“You will soon, Kathryn,” Dante replied.
“Will I also get to see my daddy too?” She asked again, and the three adults looked at her.
“Kathryn,” Gladys said with a smile.
“Yes, Grandma?”
“Why don’t you go play with some of your friends? I’m sure your friends here in Glenwood miss you.”
“Alright, Grandma.” She grinned and left the house.
Romina waited until Kathryn was out of earshot before speaking in English.
“We need to talk to Kristin. I haven’t been able to go through my phone properly because of work,” Romina said.
“You can call her and tell her you’re back in Glenwood,” Dante suggested.
Romina nodded and took her phone out of her bag.
She called Kristin, but there was no answer.
“She’s not picking up,” Romina said after several attempts.
“She’s probably busy at work. She’s a waitress in Las Vegas,” Dante informed her.
Romina nodded and went online. Her eyes widened when she came across a photo.
“Auntie, what did you say Kristin’s job is in Vegas?” Romina asked, her surprise evident.
“A waitress,” both Gladys and Dante answered.
“Isn’t this Kristin?” Romina asked, directing her phone screen towards them.
Surprise appeared on Gladys and Dante’s faces when they saw Kristin in the photo; it was a public kiss between her and Richard.
Gladys took the phone from Dante to look at the man more closely.
“Isn’t this Kristin’s boss?”
“Boss?” Dante and Romina exclaimed.
“Yes. I vividly recall his icy-looking face. He came to Glenwood when Dante was still unconscious in the hospital. Kristin introduced him as her boss from Las Vegas.”
“But the headlines say otherwise. ‘A Mesmerizing Kiss from a Billionaire and His Wife,'” Romina read the headline aloud.
“From the comments, he is a billionaire in Las Vegas with a reputation,” Romina added.
