THE CURSE OF ALTVALL : CHAPTER 31 – 40

Surganah’s Temple – Midnight Before the Execution

The black pot bubbled with blood and moonwater. Surganah stood over it, whispering words in a language older than time. The shadows twisted, then spoke.

“They plan to rise,” the voice hissed. “They think they can steal your moment.”

Surganah’s smile curled like smoke.

“Let them come,” he said. “Let them die in front of the crowd. Let despair grow deeper.”

He summoned his wraith guard. His spellbeasts. And cast an enchantment over the altar—one that would drain power from any creature who dared approach uninvited.

“Hope will be their undoing.”

The Day of the Execution

The sky was the color of bone.

The square was full—thousands gathered. Wolves. Humans. All watching with haunted eyes as Gaige was dragged to the altar. He no longer fought. His soul had retreated inward.

Audrey was nowhere in sight.

Surganah raised his arms.

Then the scream came—from the west gate.

The rebels charged in, howling. Fire in their hands. Blades drawn. Some shifted mid-air, their wolf forms glistening in defiance.

The crowd gasped.

Surganah merely smiled.

And then—death answered.

The spell-beasts rose from the earth like smoke-wrapped demons, tearing through the rebels with unholy speed. Arrows caught some mid-leap. Others were ripped apart by claws of bone.

Talien reached the altar.

He touched Gaige’s arm.

A bolt of black lightning struck him.

He crumpled, his body smoking.

In minutes, it was over.

The rebels—all of them—were dead.

The crowd wept.

Some turned away.

Others fell to their knees.

And still, Surganah stood tall.

He looked down at Gaige, barely alive.

“You were their hope,” he said softly, almost kindly. “And now you will be their lesson.”

He raised the ceremonial blade—a relic of the first wars.

And brought it down.

The scream that echoed from Gaige’s throat was not just his own—but that of every soul who believed in him.

And then he was gone.

The altar soaked his blood.

The skies turned darker still.

The people didn’t cry out.

They couldn’t.

Hope had died again on Altvall Island.

And Surganah?

He had never felt more alive.
