THE MIRACLE I NEED : Episode 41 – 50

EPISODE 41

“That wasn’t so bad now, was it?” Eric asked Kimberly with a smile as they drove out of her father’s compound while both the senator and Amaka stood there waving at them.

“Yeah, it wasn’t. It was actually better than I hoped for.” Kimberly said with a forced smile as she looked outside the window and let out the breath she had been holding. She had been expecting her father to say something harsh or nasty to her as usual, but he had been quite calm.

“You seemed kind of stiff in there, why? Were you shy? Or you’re always that quiet around them?” Eric asked after sometime making Kimberly turn to look at him.

“No. I wasn’t shy. Although I was startled a bit by what you did. Let’s just say you took me unawares with the whole public display of affection thing. You should be an actor.” Kimberly said trying to sound like she had been unaffected by it.

Eric considered her briefly before chuckling, “Then I guess we have to practice so you don’t look so startled next time. I’ll make a good actress out of you in no time.” Eric promised with a wink making her heart skip a beat as she swallowed nervously and looked away from him.

“So do you really want to elope? Or you’d rather we have a not so secret but secret wedding here in Lagos?” Eric asked, changing the subject.

“Whatever you want is okay by me.” Kimberly said with an indifferent shrug.

“Aww! I see you’re already playing the role of a typical good Nigerian wife.” Eric said with a teasing smile making Kimberly’s lips twitch with a smile.

“Is that what you want your ideal woman to be like?” She asked curiously.

“Of course not. I was only teasing you. I think you’d make a good wife though. A really good wife.” Eric said making Kimberly look at him with disbelief.

“Me? Good wife? Please say something else.” Kimberly said with a self derogatory laughter.

“Why? You don’t think so?” He asked as he turned to spare her a glance.

“I know I’m not cut out for that. Maybe if polyandry was legal in Nigeria I’d be a good wife. Having many husbands wouldn’t be such a bad thing.” She said with a wishful sigh.

“Why? You can’t stay with just one man?” Eric asked making her realize the implication of her statement.

“How come you managed to get along so well with my father?” Kimberly asked, changing the subject completely in a very obvious manner.

“Let’s talk about you. Why can’t you stay with just one man?” Eric asked, making it clear he had no intention of letting her wave off his question.

Ella wasn’t sure how she was going to go about Pete’s request. And she hated to admit to herself that somehow deep down inside, she was very worried about Ken. But not only was she worried, she was kind of curious too. She wanted to know what was going on inside his head, and why he had decided not to give marriage a thought. Was that why he had left like that after their night together? But she hadn’t even asked him to marry her or anything. It wasn’t even like they had been in a relationship so that didn’t make sense.

THE MIRACLE I NEED : Episode 41 – 50

She stood up and paced around her office. This was going to be difficult no doubt, since she was still very hurt by what he had done. She looked up when her office door was pushed open and her best friend Tracy walked in carrying two food packs, “Babez how far? Why are you just standing there like that?” Tracy asked as she dropped the food packs on the table, and took off her shoes before lowering herself on the chair.

“Just thinking about something.” Ella said distractedly.

“What are you thinking about so seriously? And why did you sound so urgent on the phone?” Tracy asked as she opened one of the food pack and started eating, “I bought you turkey and salad, I’m sure you haven’t had something to eat yet.” She informed Ella as she ate.

“I’m not hungry.” Ella muttered as she returned to her seat.

“Really? This must be serious. What is wrong?” Tracy asked with a concerned frown. Ella wasn’t one to turn down turkey and salad since it was her favorite meal combination.

“Remember I told you I ran into Ken at my brother’s house the other day? And that he came here the other day but I refused to see him?” Ella asked rhetorically.

“Yeah. That bastard!” Tracy said ferociously. She was Ella’s best friend after all, and it was the sole duty of every best friend to hate their bestie’s ex or fling.

“Well, I met him in front of my house yesterday morning when I returned from my morning run.” Ella said making Tracy drop her spoon.

“Why is he stalking you? What did he say he want?”

“I guess he wanted to explain, and needed me to hear him out.” Ella said with a shrug.

“Are you kidding me? After two whole years? Two fking years? I really hope you asked him to go fk himself.” Tracy asked angrily.

“Not in those exact words, but yeah. I didn’t let him explain.”

“Good. So what is bothering you? You feel sorry for him?” Tracy asked, guessing that Ella being the soft type she was, was probably regretting her decision already.

“I don’t know… I think something might be bothering him and maybe I should have listened to him… just hear me out.” Ella said when Tracy opened her mouth to argue, “Kunle thinks something might be wrong with him too. Kunle pleaded with me to talk to Ken.”

“What? He knows about the one night stand?” Tracy asked in confusion.

“Of course he doesn’t. I and Ken used to be kinda close growing up, so he kinda thinks Ken will open up to me about what’s going on with him.” Ella said with a shrug.

“And why do I feel like you are curious to know what’s wrong too?” Tracy asked, giving her a knowing look.

Ella shrugged again, “Maybe it might have something to do with why he left that way. And I just might get closure from that heartbreak and be able to move on finally.” Ella said thoughtfully.

“Or you might get involved again in the process while trying to help him fix things, and end up getting heartbroken all over again. See one of my biggest regrets was being out of town that night when that idiot Charles broke your heart. Maybe if I was around you wouldn’t have had to go out with Ken, and you wouldn’t have had a one night stand with him or gotten heart broken.” Tracy said irritably making Ella smile.

“I appreciate your concern. But honestly, I don’t think you could have stopped whatever happened between us from happening. What happened between I and Ken was a long time coming, and you know it. I’ve always been drawn to him, remember? So we were bound to have sex be it that night or later.”

“Yeah. Like you’re drawn to every helpless person you meet. You just like people that seem like they need help, and you always want to fix things for everyone. That’s your greatest weakness.” Tracy said dryly as she resumed eating again.

“What’s the worse that could happen? Besides I’m just going pay him a visit at his office. It’s not like I’m meeting him at his place or in a hotel.” Ella said, trying to convince Tracy.

“If you’ve made up your mind to do that, then why are you still here?” Tracy asked raising her brow in a manner that implied she knew Ella wanted her to support her decision.

“I don’t know. What do you think? You know how restless I get about things like this.” Ella said with a sigh as she reached for the plate of turkey and salad and started eating.

“You know I’ll always support you. And maybe you’re right, this might give you the closure you need. But if he so much as hurts you, I’m going to find him, and I will kill him. So for his sake, make sure you don’t get hurt.” Tracy warned making Ella smile.

“Thanks. What will I do without you?”

“Nothing of course. So was this the reason you were sounding that way over the phone and made me leave my office?” Tracy asked making Ella give her a sheepish smile.

“Yeah. Sorry. It sounded so important and serious in my head, but now that I’ve told you about it, it doesn’t seem like a big deal.” Ella said apologetically.

“It’s okay. As long as you’re fine, it’s okay. I should get back to my office, I have a meeting to attend in an hour.” Tracy said as she stood up to take her leave, and cleaned her mouth with a serviette napkin, “Make sure you let me know how the meeting with him goes.” Tracy said as she headed for the door.

THE MIRACLE I NEED : Episode 41 – 50

An hour later Ella drove into the parking lot of Ken’s office and took in a deep breath as she turned off her car’s ignition. She had no idea what she was going to say to him, but she just wanted to see him and get this done with. She pulled down her sun visor to check her face on the mirror, and applied a fresh coat of red lipstick on her lips before stepping out of her car. One look at her, dressed in her ripped jean, with a gray sleeveless turtleneck top tucked in, and a gray stilleto heel, one would see a very beautiful and confident young lady.

She stopped when she got to his secretary’s desk, and flashed the lady a polite smile, “Good afternoon ma! Please, is Mr Femi in?” She asked politely.

“No he isn’t. He didn’t come to work today.” The secretary said with an apologetic smile making Ella regret her decision of coming over to his office without first giving him a call. But then again, she paused when she remembered that Ken wasn’t the type to skip work.

“He didn’t? Why?” She asked with a concerned frown.

“I didn’t get your name. Who are you?” The lady asked politely, since she couldn’t divulge her boss’ personal information to a stranger.

“Oh! Sorry. I’m Kemi Isabella Howells. The younger sister of his best friend Kunle.” She rushed to explain.

“Oh! You’re Kunle’ sister? It’s nice to meet you. It’s good that you’re here, he hasn’t been taking his call all morning, and he wasn’t looking too well as at the time he was leaving the office yesterday. I would have gone to check on him, but I have to remain here in case a client comes. Do you mind going over to check on him?” She asked hopefully.

“He wasn’t looking too well?” She asked with a concerned frown.

“Yeah. He looked kind of sick.” The lady said with a nod.

“Alright. I’ll be on my way now. Thanks.” Ella said as she took out her phone to dial Pete’s number. He should at least know that she had tried to see him, but he was ill.

“Will you check on him?” The secretary asked curiously.

“I’ll see what I can do.” Ella responded noncommittally as she raised her phone to her ear when Pete took her call, “Hey! I just left Femi’s office. He isn’t at the office and the secretary says he’s not taking his call.” she said and went on to tell him what the secretary had said about Ken looking ill.

“I’m kind of in the middle of something right now. You remember his house, right? Please help me check on him. Let me know if he’s at home and how he is doing.” Pete said and hung up before Ella could refuse.

His house? That was the last place she wanted to be right now.
