THE MIRACLE I NEED SEASON 2 : Episode 11 – 20

EPISODE 11

“I thought I was going to have to come over to your apartment to carry you out,” Pete said in relief when Kathleen stepped into the living room.

She gave him a shy smile, not knowing what to say, “Where is Amanda?” She asked, looking around her since that was the only thing she could think of.

“She has gone to bed. It’s just the both of us here,” Pete said as he walked over to where she was standing and looked at her with a small smile.

“Are you nervous?” He asked curiously when he noticed how tense she seemed.

Kathleen nodded, “Sort of.”

“Why? It’s not like it’s your first time being around me,” Pete reminded her.

“Well, it is my first time being around you as your… You know, as someone you’re in a relationship with,” she countered with a shrug.

“Well, it’s still me. The only thing that has changed is our relationship title. Now come on, I’ll fix something for you to eat while you brief me in on all that has happened in my absence,” Pete suggested as he led the way to the kitchen.

“By the way, did you change your body spray?” Kathleen asked curiously as she walked behind him into the kitchen.

Pete turned around to look at her, impressed that she had taken note of that minor detail, “Yeah. Why?”

“It’s just that I prefer the former one,” Kathleen said, making Pete smile.

“Really? Why?” He asked curiously.

Of course, there was no way she was going to tell him that it made her want to bury her nose on his body and sniff him all day, so she simply shrugged, “I don’t know,” she said without meeting his gaze.

“I have a feeling you know why. But it’s okay, I will just give this one out, and go back to using the previous one. So what would you like me to prepare for you?” He asked her curiously.

“It’s late already. Let’s just heat one of the bowls of soups in the freezer,” Kathleen suggested instead, as she walked over to the freezer and took out a bowl of Banga soup.

“Are you sure you are okay with eating that? I could whip up something really quick.”

“I’m okay with this,” Kathleen assured him as she let him take the bowl of soup from her. She watched as he emptied the frozen soup into a pot and placed it over the gas burner before turning on the gas, and placing it on low heat so the soup can be slowly defrosted without getting burnt.

“Do you want garri or semo?” He asked as he opened the kitchen cabinet containing them.

“Semo is fine.”

“Good. So go on, tell me what happened in my absence. How are things at the office? Are they still bothering you?” Pete asked as he placed a pot of water on another gas burner and turned it on.

“Your mother came to see me at the office,” Kathleen said, making him turn to look at her with a slightly raised brow.

“Again?”

“Yeah.”

“What did she say this time?” Pete asked with a concerned frown.

“Nothing much. She apologized for the last time, and said she had nothing against our relationship,” Kathleen explained making Pete let out a sigh of relief. And then he realized he shouldn’t have been too worried about it since she had already agreed to date him despite his mother’s visit.

“I suppose that influenced your final decision?” He asked curiously.

“Sure. I would never get involved with you if your family is against it,” Kathleen said with a nod.

“Really? I thought love was supposed to conquer everything?” Pete asked without turning to look at her as he stirred the semovita in the pot.

“You’re the first son of your family, right?”

“Yeah. So?”

“The person you marry is supposed to be like a mother to your siblings in the absence of your mother, in the same way, you would stand as the father in absence of your father. You shouldn’t marry someone your family doesn’t accept,” Kathleen explained.

“So does that mean if I wasn’t the firstborn, say maybe I was the last born, you would marry me against my family’s wish?”

Kathleen giggled, “No. I still won’t marry you.”

“I see. Tell me something, how long do you think two people should be in a relationship before they settle down?” Pete asked, making Kathleen’s heart skip a beat.

She swallowed as she blinked at him. Why was he asking her that all of a sudden? “I suppose it depends on them,” she answered cautiously.

“What about them?” Pete asked as he turned off the gas and turned around to look at her curiously.

“It depends on how well they know each other?” Kathleen said uncertainly.

“How well do you know me? Can you tell me at least ten things you know about me?” He asked, making her brows form a crease. That wasn’t the kind of question she was expecting from him.

“Why?”

“Just because I’m curious. So indulge me,” Pete pleaded as he headed for the dining, expecting her to follow him, “Let’s seat here while the soup gets heated,” he suggested as he pulled out one of the seats at the dining table for her to sit down.

Kathleen felt like this was some sort of test and she needed to think carefully before giving him any answer. What exactly did she know about him? She wondered as she sat down, while he took the seat at the head of the table which was adjacent to her.

“You’re thinking about it?” Pete asked, reminding her that he was still waiting for her to answer his question.

“General or personal details?” Kathleen asked as she gathered her thoughts.

“Personal.”

“Okay. You are passionate about cooking. You can be really mean and arrogant when you want to be. You are very kind-hearted. You are easily amused. You are very bossy. You are not judgemental. You are patient and impatient at the same time. You are very understanding and empathetic. You are the jealous type. And you love kissing a lot,” Kathleen said the last part without meeting his gaze.

“I don’t just love kissing. I love kissing you a lot,” Pete corrected with a grin, but Kathleen said nothing.

“Do you think I’m more patient or impatient?” Pete asked, leaning forward in his seat so he could get her attention.

“I don’t know. Maybe it depends on your mood?” Kathleen asked thoughtfully as she returned her gaze to meet his.

“It depends on what I want. I could become very impatient when I desperately want something,” he said without looking away from her.

“Like what?” Kathleen asked as she kept looking into his eyes.

“Like you. I’m trying very hard to be patient with you. It’s your first time, so I’m trying my best to be understanding,” Pete said with a smile before pulling back.

“I heard from Eric that you’re friends with Kimberly?” Pete asked, changing the subject since he didn’t want her to ask him any question.

“Oh! Yeah.”

“You don’t mind being friends with her even though you know what happened between me and her?” Pete asked curiously.

“I don’t think the past should matter. She’s a sweet person, and I’m sure nothing will happen between you both again,” Kathleen said confidently.

“True. Did I tell you I ran into Eric at the airport on my way back? He offered to help me get a place for my restaurant,”

“Your restaurant? You’re already thinking of establishing it?” Kathleen asked with interest.

Pete nodded, “Yeah. Eric suggested I make it like a subsidiary of the main company, and I buy the idea, what do you think?”

“I think it’s brilliant. As long as you get to do something you love, it’s great. Your father should be okay with that, right?”

“Yeah. I’m thinking of having Chidi run it on my behalf. He is really good with people, so the hospitality business should be his thing. What do you think?”

Kathleen smiled at the thought of Chidi running the restaurant, “I agree. I think he is the best person to handle such a job on your behalf.”

************

Amaka’s brow was furrowed in a worried frown as she paced around her bedroom while she kept trying to reach Kingsley. Why was she yet to hear from him since yesterday? Had something gone wrong with the plan? Why was there no news of a scandal on the internet? She didn’t want to risk going to the hotel to find out if anything had happened, and she didn’t want to call Kimberly as it would seem suspicious.

Her stomach was twisted in a knot, and she couldn’t shake off the feeling that something was wrong. What could be wrong? The only good thing about the whole thing was that Kingsley didn’t know who she was. And she had already made up a perfect explanation to excuse her involvement and why she had asked Kimberly to help her friend with the decoration. It was a harmless mistake and she hadn’t known they had any evil intentions. There was no reason she would want to endanger her stepdaughter after all. Especially not when her husband was running for the gubernatorial elections. She wouldn’t jeopardize his chances by doing something that outrageous. There was no way Eric would want Kimberly to know about their relationship anyway since he was keeping his identity from her for reasons best known to him.

Just when she managed to convince herself that nothing could possibly go wrong for her, her phone started ringing making her almost jump out of her skin. Her heart almost flew into her throat when she saw the name displayed on the screen. Why was Eric calling her? She wondered in panic as she accepted the call.

“I suppose you have been expecting my call, haven’t you?” Eric asked in a cool tone.

Amaka swallowed nervously, “Good morning, Eric! How are you?” She asked with false cheerfulness.

“I see you haven’t lost your flair for drama. Save the talent for your husband, I don’t care for it…”

Amaka’s heart raced as she tried to come up with a smart response, “What are you talking about?”

“I’m thinking about calling a family meeting. Maybe you care to explain to your husband what happened with Kimberly yesterday?” Eric asked, shattering all hope that Amaka had about him not wanting to mention their relationship.

“Wha…at?” She stuttered.

“I just left the police station now, and I have to admit that you did a good job covering your track very well. But you are still not very smart. Tell your husband the truth or I will tell him myself. I wonder who he is going to believe, his promiscuous little wife or the Obasans?” Eric threatened, making Amaka lower herself to the ground. What did he know? What did he want her to tell her husband? Why did he call her promiscuous? Did he find out about her and Kingsley? What was he even doing at the police station? Did they arrest Kingsley? How? This wasn’t good at all!

“What are you…” Before she could ask her questions she heard the disconnect tone.

“Oh my God!” Amaka exclaimed.

Immediately Eric disconnected the call and dropped the phone, he let out a deep sigh as he tapped his hand on the steering wheel of his car. He hadn’t realized how much he had missed his cars until Wumi had joined him at the station in this one, and handed him the key.

“What are we going to do now?” Wumi asked, looking at him curiously.

“Let’s just wait for the police to bring in that Kingsley guy that paid them, and then we can proceed from there. Although I have a feeling that I know who this guy might be,” Eric said thoughtfully.

“You do? Who do you think he is?” Wumi asked.

“Did you know mum hired a private investigator to follow Amaka around?” Eric asked Wumi with a sigh.

“She did? I had no idea. But then again, I’m not surprised. You know how she believes in knowing everything about a person whether she considers them her enemies or friends. And you know how she keeps talking about her private investigator friend back in the state?” Wumi said with a shrug.

“Yeah. I guess I should have known. But I just felt this is Nigeria, and things are handled differently here. I didn’t expect her to take things that seriously,” Eric said as he kept staring at the entrance of the police station.

“How did you know though? Did she tell you? Did the private investigator find anything serious? Not that I expect a Nigerian private investigator to do anything meaningful anyway,” Wumi said with a scoff.

Eric had left the house earlier that morning so he could be at the police station and question the men who had dared to plot against his wife. On his way to the police station, he had called his parents to find out how his father was doing since he had been unable to do that the previous evening. And when they had asked about Kimberly, he had told them about her reaction and then told them he was on his way to the police station to see the men.

“The other time you said you thought Amaka was behind what happened at the hotel, right?” His mother had asked.

“Yes. She was the one who told Kimberly about the job. Why?” Eric asked distractedly as he looked out of the car while the bolt driver maneuvered through the morning traffic.

“Well, I found out something interesting this morning,”

“What do you mean ‘I’? Wasn’t I the person who showed it to you?” He heard his father remind his mother in the background.

“Does it matter? Are you the one who paid the investigator?” His mother had asked defensively.

“Private investigator? What private investigator?” Eric had asked in confusion.

“Well, at first I was just going to gather evidence to use against her if she failed to heed to my warning. Hence, I hired a private investigator,” His mother explained.

“And who gave you the suggestion? Wasn’t I the one who gave you the contact of the investigator?” His father had asked again.

“What did he find?” Eric asked, trying to make them focus on the subject.

“As I was saying, all I needed was something I could use against her. So when the investigator sent a picture of her going into a hotel with a young man two days ago, I assumed she was just being a promiscuous wife and didn’t think much about it. But then I showed the pictures to your father and he thought the man looked familiar. We later realized he is the same young man in the club video that went viral. I mean the man you hit for harassing Kimberly,” His mother had explained.

“You mean Amaka is having an affair with that guy?”

“That’s what the pictures showed,” His mother had said.
