A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL : CHAPTER 141 – 150

I considered his words, noting the clarity with which he spoke. His feelings for Selene were an unusual blend of affection and distance, a bond without a demand.

It was so unlike Lucien to feel this way that I found myself oddly intrigued, wondering what it was about her that had softened even his rough edges.

“You confuse me at times, Lucien,” I admitted, half-smiling, and he looked at me, his eyes alight with something uncharacteristically serious.

“Maybe that’s because I don’t want to see her become another casualty of this world. She deserves better than that, doesn’t she?”

I raised my glass in silent acknowledgment, taking a sip, letting the flavor linger. Lucien picked up his fork, cut a generous piece of cake, and ate thoughtfully, as if the act of eating might somehow lessen the weight of his concerns.

“I’ve seen people fall for less,” he went on, almost to himself. “But it’s never been like this for me. When I’m around her, it’s not about wanting her. It’s about protecting her, watching her find her way, even if I’m only there to witness it.”

I couldn’t help but feel a strange sense of pity for him in that moment. For all his impulsive nature, Lucien had the capacity for genuine care, and it was clear he held Selene in that regard, if given a chance, he will definitely wish to be her lover.

“You’re a fool for it,” I told him, though my voice held no malice.

He laughed, tipping his glass in agreement. “Maybe so. But I’d rather be a fool than someone who doesn’t care at all.” He took another bite, chewing slowly, thoughtfully, before glancing at me with a glint of mischief. “So, what about you, Lucifer? Is it love that’s kept you close to her, or are you just a devil playing a game?”

The question hung in the air, heavy and expectant, but I only smirked, refusing to answer. Lucien’s eyes glinted with understanding, a faint smile playing on his lips as if he’d known my answer all along.

Silence settled between us, comfortable, almost companionable. We finished the cake and lingered over the last of the drinks, each lost in our own thoughts. Lucien’s head tilted back as he stared at the ceiling, the faintest hint of sadness still shadowing his face.

“I suppose,” he murmured after a long pause, “if caring makes me a fool, I’ll gladly be one. Selene deserves someone who sees her as more than a pawn. And I’ll be damned if I let anyone take that from her.”

” I won’t stop you from shooting your shot ” I take another bite from the cake and he look at me ” am confident she won’t go with you ”

” Lucifer, are you sure?”

I look at Lucien with furrow brows ” I see you as a friend Lucien, go ahead and confess your feelings to her… Who knows, she might like you ” I watch as his face widen with smiles ” do not touch her though, that will increase my chances of killing you ”

SELENE JOLT UP.

The moment Lucifer slipped out of the room, shutting the door quietly behind him, I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding.

I barely had a moment to settle when Anna stirred beside me, her eyes snapping open with such abruptness that I jumped, pressing my back against the headboard.

She sat up, her gaze fixed on me with an intensity that sent a chill down my spine. Something was off—something deeper than her usual silence.

“They’re here for you,” Anna whispered, her expression twisted with worry, a frown tugging at her mouth. “They think you’re the way to anger Lucifer.”

A strange curiosity sparked in me, coupled with a feeling of unease. I leaned in closer, trying to make sense of her words. “What are you talking about, Anna? Who is ‘they’?”

She looked at me, her frown deepening, and her voice dropped to a murmur as if we were being watched. “Demons from hell, Selene.

They think that harming you will hurt him. But it’s not just that…” She hesitated, her eyes flickering as though she was struggling to keep something hidden.

Finally, she took a slow breath and looked me directly in the eyes. “You’re only here on earth because Lucifer had to give your parents children. Lucifer can’t give or bring back life, Selene.”

My heart raced as I tried to process her words, but she leaned back slightly, her eyes shifting, almost glowing, their shade becoming a brilliant, unnatural blue. She shook her head slowly. “I don’t even think you’re human.”

Her words pierced through me, leaving an icy silence hanging between us.

“Anna…” I said softly, fear and confusion tightening in my chest. “What are you talking about?”
