A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL : CHAPTER 91 – 100
By the seventh day, I was done pretending.
Tonight, as I sat down for dinner, the silence was so thick it felt almost suffocating. I barely picked at the food on my plate, pushing it around with my fork. The silence seemed to swallow me up whole.
“You’re not eating,” Mirabel’s voice cut through, her tone colder than usual. She was watching me carefully, as if searching for something. “What could be the matter?”
“Lucifer,” I said, my voice soft but heavy. His name felt strange on my lips, like saying it might somehow summon him back. “When’s he coming back?”
“Eat,” she hissed, snapping the word at me, her eyes sharp and hard. I could feel myself bristle at her tone. She was always like this—cold, almost as though I were something she merely tolerated.
And tonight, her gaze held something even darker, a look that sent a shiver crawling up my spine. But I held her stare, refusing to let her see the discomfort she caused.
I knew she wouldn’t dare touch me. She wouldn’t dream of it. I was under Lucifer’s protection, and I knew full well that he’d do something to her if she tried anything.
I forced myself to eat a few bites before pushing away from the table and leaving her there without a second glance. I climbed the stairs, each step heavier than the last, and returned to my room. But rest wouldn’t come.
I lay awake, thoughts of Lucifer’s absence circling in my mind until frustration grew, festering inside me like an itch I couldn’t scratch.
Without a second thought, I marched down the hall and pushed open the door to Lucifer’s room. I wasn’t sure what I expected to find—maybe something, anything, that would hint at where he’d gone.
But what I found instead made me stop cold.
Mirabel was sprawled across the bed, naked, her body twisting over the sheets in a way that made my stomach churn.
Her hands moved over herself in a way that left no doubt about what she was doing. She was so engrossed, she didn’t even notice me standing there.
“What are you doing?” someone said behind me, I didn’t pay much attention.
“I think Mirabel loves Lucifer,” I muttered, more to myself, trying to make sense of the absurdity of what I was seeing.
“Oh, really?”
“Yes,” I said flatly, my voice barely more than a whisper. I couldn’t look away. A part of me was horrified, repulsed by the sight of her sprawled out across his bed.
But another part of me… couldn’t stop wondering if this was why Lucifer hadn’t returned. Maybe she’d been waiting here for him all this time.
“What about you, Selene?” the voice calm. “Don’t you miss him?”
The words slipped out before I could stop them, driven by a feeling I couldn’t quite name. “Oh, I do.”
The deep, familiar voice that suddenly filled the room made my heart stop. “Do you now?”
I spun around, pulse racing, and there he was—Lucifer, standing in the doorway, he stare at me, smiling.
Slowly, his arms spread wide. His eyes were fixed on me with an intensity that sent a jolt through me, a strange mix of dread and relief. There was a dark, knowing look in his eyes, a faint, wicked smile on his lips.
“Lucifer?”
“Come here,” he said, his voice low and commanding, a hint of amusement in his gaze as he watched me, as if waiting to see what I would do.
I stood there, feeling like the room was closing in around me. Lucifer’s gaze held mine, unblinking and intense, like he could see right through me.
His arms were still outstretched, waiting, and there was something in the way he looked at me that made it impossible to move, to think.
