Chapter 44

Anastasia’s pov ?
LA city hospital…
Graham drives into a space in the parking lot, without wasting time, I open the door and jumped out of the car.
Klaus follows suit, then we head towards the hospital entrance… breathlessly, I ran past wards until I stopped at Denzel’s.
I grab the door handle and push it open, my eyes move straight to Denzel’s bed.
He’s laying down with aunt sitting by his side, she’s holding a Bible and a cross… singing quietly.
Seeing aunt’s expression and how stilled Denzel’s laying on the bed… made me wonder if something happened to him.
With my heart pounding, I studied Denzel and realized he’s awake and he’s staring at aunt.
He turns his head towards me, he smiles.
“A-nna?” Denzel stutters softly.
Aunt raised her head and sees me, she rushed towards me and pulled me into a hug.
“You’re finally here!” She whispers in my ear.
I wrap my arms around her, I rub her back in a comforting manner.
“Aunt, you said it’s about to start.. why isn’t Denzel dressed yet?” I asked.
If he’s going into the operating room, he should be in lighter clothes by now… but he’s still in his usual clothes.
Aunt pull away, she holds my hand with lead me to the couch she was sitting… she made me sit next to her.
“I just wanted you to be here… ”
She pause and sucks in a large amount of air, before releasing a shaky breath again.
“…. I’m a little bit nervous, I just needed someone to stay by me and pray with me!”
I take her hands in mine and rub them, her hands are so cold.. like freezing cold.
She’s not a little bit nervous at all, she’s very much nervous… I’m nervous too but not as much as her.
“Aunt, Denzel has been fighting since the beginning, he’s not gonna give up now!”
My eyes subconsciously glance at Denzel as I say those words, he’s staring at us…he look so clueless, but I know he knows what we’re talking about!
“I know.. I know.. I’m just… I don’t know, I’m having a cold feeling deep in my gut!”
“You’re just scaring yourself, aunt, everything will be fine!”
Denzel sit up, he crawls to the edge of his bed and reach for aunt’s hand.. he smiles.
“Doctor Hemsworth said I’m a very strong boy.. he said I’m a superman, right Anna?” He calls for my backup.
I nod quickly. “Yes, you’re a superman!”
Aunt didn’t say a word, she simply gives us a weak smile.. she inhales deeply and tries to calm herself down.
“And besides, I believe you’ve been praying.. God is listening!” I told her.
I’m comforting her, at the same time comforting myself…Klaus steps closer to me and rubs my shoulder reassuringly.
He’s been standing by the door since we came in.
A knock is heard and doctor Hemsworth walks in, he’s already dressed and ready.. he’s holding a nose mask in his right hand.. he’s already wore his gloves too.
“Doctor!” I called him.
He smiles at me briefly before turning to Denzel, he reaches for Denzel’s hair and ruffles it.
“How is my superman feeling today?” He asked.
Denzel beats his chest and puffs it out.
“I’m good!” He answers.
“Are you ready?”
“Yeah!” He frowns. “After this I’ll be fine.. right?”
“Of course, champ, you’ll be super strong too!”
Denzel chuckles and turns to aunt who’s still shaking slightly.
“Aunt, listen, he said I’ll be fine!”
Aunt nods. I face doctor Hemsworth and called his attention.
“When is the operation gonna commence?”
“Soon, you should start dressing him!” He said.
Aunt got up and steps closer to doctor Hemsworth and I.
“I hope all your facilities are of standard quality?”
“Yes, Ms Bell… I assure you, your boy is in safe hands!”
Aunt nods, but she doesn’t seem like she’s satisfied with his answer… She wanted to ask another question but I cut her off.
“Doctor, let’s get ready!”

Aunt holds Denzel’s hands in hers, as the nurses pushed him towards the operating room on a stretcher.
Klaus and I follow them too, soon, we arrived and they stopped outside the room.
My hand holding Klaus’, tightens and my heart beat increased, the words written on top the door haunting my eyes.
I stagger back slightly.
“Anastasia, breathe, Denzel needs you to be strong now!” Klaus whisper in my ear.
My eyes move to aunt, she’s holding Denzel’s hand in a death grip.. her eyes red.
Klaus is right, I shouldn’t show any weakness now… Aunt and Denzel needs me to be strong.
I walk closer to them and smiled at Denzel.
“Den, aunt and I are waiting for you here, ok?”
He nods.
“You’re gonna go in there with doctor Hemsworth and come out with him safe and sound.. can you do that for me?”
He nods again. “Yes!”
He turns towards my aunt and frowns, he turns back to me.
“But Aunt is still crying… Am I gonna die in there?”
I slap my hand on his mouth, I shake my head frantically.
“No! No, don’t ever speak of you dying again… you’re going in there and coming out in one piece!”
He nods, I remove my hand and walk over to aunt.. she couldn’t say anything, she’s just staring at him with her red puffy eyes.
“Aunt, do you have something to say to Denzel?”
“I.. I.. just want my boy to be fine!” She said.
“Of course, he’ll be fine!”
Doctor Hemsworth walks into the scene, he faces aunt and give her a reassuring smile.
“Denzel will be fine, trust me!”
Aunt grip his hands.
“I’m putting his life in your hands, make sure he comes out in one piece… Or I swear, I’ll tear this hospital down!”
Doctor Hemsworth nods frighteningly, I gently pull aunt away from him and signal him to leave with Denzel.
He nods and instructs the nurses to push Denzel into the room, he enters after them.
Aunt and I watch the doors closing slowly.. finally, the doors close… Aunt inches forward.
“He’ll be fine… He’ll be fine!” She chant as she holds up her bible.
I understand her fear, she’s just so much in love with Denzel.. he’s a sweet little boy after all.

Matilda’s pov ?
Working in the financing department is very hectic.. why didn’t I know this before?
It’s just my first day at work and I’m already going through every single account book!
My phone vibrate in my pocket, I reach for it and check the caller’s ID… It’s Jack calling.
“Hello, Jack?” I receive the call.
“Hey, Tilda, I was trying to reach Tasia but couldn’t.. is everything alright with her?”
I frown, but I quickly remember that her phone’s broken.
“She broke her phone!”
I stamped a report and keep it aside, I reach for a stapler and staples some papers together.
“Why are you looking for her?” I asked.
“Nothing, we agreed to meet today but it’s past 3pm and I haven’t seen or heard from her!” He said.
“I guess it’s because her phone is broken!”
There’s a brief silence, before he speaks again.
“Do you by any chance knows where she is?”
I paused and narrow my eyes.
“She’s at work dummy, I’m at work too and you’re disturbing my work!”
Ok, I’m angry at my work load and what I’m doing right now is.. transfer of aggression!
“Well.. if you can reach her, please remind her of our meeting!”
I sighed deeply. “I will”
Just then I saw Marcus walking towards me, I rolled my eyes.. this is the twentieth time he’s come to this department today.
“Jack, I gotta go now!” I said and hang up.
Marcus stop in front of my desk, he pulls out a chair and sit down.
“Miss Spears, I can see you’re doing a great job!” He said.
“Mr Aurelius, is this how you’re gonna keep monitoring me everyday?” I asked.
He smirks and throws me a wink, his eyebrows raises slightly.. giving him a boyish look.
Boyish what?! What am I thinking?! I slap myself mentally and shake my head.
“You look beautiful when working!”
“Really?!” I scoff. “Your flirting skills are so lame!”
“I can learn from you.. if you’re willing to teach me”
I ignored him and continue with my work, I can see some workers looking our way.. they might be wondering what’s my relationship with Marcus.
“If you wanna take the rest of the day off, I’ll let you!” He suddenly speak.
I frown.
“Off? Why should I take a day off?”
“You know, Anna is in the hospital”
“Hospital? Is she sick?” I asked.
“No, today is her brother’s operation.. I think she might need your company!”
Shoot! Tasia told me about it, I forgot! How can I forget something so important to her?!
My eyes meets my wrist watch.. it’s already 3:31pm.
I stand up abruptly and snatch my phone from the table, I pick my bag too.
“I.. I should get going, thanks for your reminder!” I said.
He gets up too. “I’ll come with you!”

Anastasia’s pov ?
LA city hospital…
? you sent your word… ?
? and you heal my disease… ?
? you are my Lord… ?
? my healer…. ?
Aunt has been singing this song silently to comfort herself, some times I’ll sing along.
We’ve been waiting outside the operating room for 4hours now.
Doctor Hemsworth had told me earlier, that it’s gonna be a 3hours operation… but it’s 4hours now and he’s still not out yet.
“Klaus?”
“Yeah?”
“Why do you think they’re taking so long?” I asked.. my voice a little bit shaky.
Klaus wraps his arm around my shoulder and pull me closer to him.. he placed a kss on my forehead.
“They’re making sure everything is fine… don’t worry, aunt has been praying for Denzel.. God is working on him!”
I know he’s just saying that to comfort me, Klaus doesn’t believe in God.. he doesn’t even believe in what he’s saying.
“But they’re taking so long!”
“He’ll be fine!”
I feel a gush of cold blow past me and I suddenly feel so cold.. I shiver and Klaus hugs me tightly.
“I’m cold!”
“Then lean on me, I’ll keep you warm!”
I did, I lean on him but I’m still cold.. right at that moment the doors open and doctor Hemsworth walks out.
Aunt and I sprint up, we raced towards him.. aunt look behind him as she look for Denzel.
“Doctor, how was it? How is my brother? Can we take him home now?” I asked in one breath.
Hemsworth bows his head and didn’t say anything, he look sad and I frown.
“Doctor, talk to me… how was the operation? How is my brother?”
Aunt is looking at him eagerly, she’s waiting for his reply as much as I am.
“I’m.. I’m sorry, Ms Bell.. Miss Lopez…”
“Sorry? You’re sorry about what?” I asked.
My heart pounding, like I already know what he wanna say, I’ve watch this scene in the movies.
“We tried our best.. but.. we lost him!”
I hear a thud, and turn towards aunt, she’s laying on the floor… some passerby nurses rushed to her.
My head grows bigger and heavier as I replay his words in my head… I turned to him with my eyes wide open.
I grab his cloth. “Is this a joke? Huh? Are you pranking me?”
He shakes his head.
“Miss Lopez, I wish it’s a joke!”
“Don’t wish! Tell me it’s a joke! Tell me! Say it!” I screamed in his face.
But he didn’t say it, he shakes his head sadly. I stagger back and Klaus holds me to stop me from falling.
“It’s not true, Denzel is fine! He’ll run out of that room and tell me he’s a superman.. right Klaus?”
Klaus didn’t reply, I stare at him with a frown… why isn’t saying anything?!
“Denzel is a strong boy, he’s been fighting from the beginning.. he won’t give up now.. not after all the struggle…”
I made to run past doctor Hemsworth into the operating room, but Klaus held me back.
“Let me go! I wanna go get Denzel, he wants me to go get him!”
“Anastasia, Anastasia calm down.. calm down first!” Klaus said.
I pushed him away from me and slapped doctor Hemsworth.. I point my forefinger at him.
“You.. you promised us.. you assured us that he’s gonna come out alive.. then what is this you’re saying now? Huh?”
I pushed him and he staggers back, Klaus quickly grabs me from behind.. refraining me from coming at Hemsworth.
“You’re not qualified to be a doctor! You are a disgrace to doctors! You are a liar! A fraud!”
“Baby calm down, you’re saying so really mean words now!” Klaus said.
I scoffed..
“Mean words?! Really?!” I pushed myself away from him.
I don’t know where I got all this strength, but I seem to be stronger than Klaus today.. he couldn’t hold me down.
“I’m going to buy Denzel’s favorite fruits.. by the time I’m back, I want you to bring my brother out.. alive!”
“Anastasia where…”
I didn’t listen to Klaus, I ran out of the hospital like a mad woman.. I even bumped into some people but I didn’t bother to look back!
