OUR MARRIAGE IS JUST A PIECE OF PAPER : EPISODES 1 – 10
Episode 2
This is about marriage, and we don’t even love each other,” I replied.
“Do you have a boyfriend? Do you love someone else?” my dad questioned.
“What if I do?” I responded truthfully. In reality, I didn’t have a boyfriend or any official relationship.
“Forget about him. You will have to live with him, with or without love,” my dad insisted.
My plan to fool them had failed. I was left with only Ma. I hugged her and cried, feeling helpless.
Yes, they had asked for only one thing from me, but it meant everything in the world.
They were treating me like a business deal. I didn’t even know what the other person felt or thought.
I questioned why this merger needed to happen when our company was already thriving.
When I asked my grandpa, all he said was, “You won’t understand. It’s important.”
As Ma led me to my bed, I asked her to leave. She must have been tired.
As soon as she left, I went to the bathroom and let out my emotions through tears. It brought some relief.
“So, Ahana, be ready. Your new life awaits you. Remember, you are doing this for your family,” I reassured myself.
I needed to be strong, considering my family and the success of Sehgal Enterprises.
This marriage would benefit the company, and I was the one who had to make it work.
I woke up early the next day, with my pillow still wet from a sleepless night.
I changed and went downstairs for breakfast. Everyone was already present, and I put on a show of excellence, smiling and trying to be warm as always.
“Ahana, we will be going to the Raichands this evening. Finish your work early and dress your best.
They want the bride and groom to see each other,” they informed me.
The words “bride and groom” made me uncomfortable. I didn’t want to marry someone I didn’t love, but I had no choice.
“Of course, Ma will help me find the best dress, right?” I said, trying to sound positive.
She looked surprised but nodded, probably wondering about the sudden change of heart.
In the evening, I returned home early.
I wasn’t excited to meet them, but I had to pretend.
“Ahana, you don’t need to do this. Please,” Ma said, trying to persuade me.
Ma was helping me get ready, but I remained silent.
“They are too mean towards you. Time has been cruel. It has drained them out of emotions. You are an independent woman. You can do well for yourself. You can always live the life you have imagined for yourself.
I’ll be very happy wherever you go, and I want you to be safe with a huge smile on your face.”
“It’s easy to say, Ma. But it’s very difficult to do. And running away… Ha! Run away from my family.
I don’t even have many friends. I have only you in this world. Running like a coward so that people can see how fragile and weak I am.
Even the boy must be going through all this. I am pretty sure he must also not want all this to happen.
Run away from all the hard work I have given to this company. Never. I’ll fight this and try to make our marriage work, I promise.
Although if it’s based on some business, of course, relationships can’t be made on business deals.
But mine is, and the world will see that there is nothing in this world of which Ahana Sehgal is not capable. Be it getting married to a stranger.”
I know that I was saying too much, but I needed to feel strong, and you know what? It felt better.
