Episode 9
Everything that’s done here is professional, and I’ve got no time for pranks.”
“But I can’t be pregnant!” I half yelled, not knowing if I were to cry or stay angry.
“I…I didn’t sleep with anyone. So, how can I be pregnant?”
Mum stood up immediately, her hands shaking with the paper in them. Her eyes were still buried in it.
“M…Mum,” I stuttered tearfully and stood up, but her eyes wouldn’t leave the paper.
My breath wavered, and I looked back at the doctor. What’s going on?
Slowly, Mum started walking out of the office.
I barged into the house, tears streaming down my cheeks.
“Mum,” I called as I met her in the sitting room.
She turned and gave me a stingy slap.
“How could you, Zoey?” She wept.
“How could you? After everything we’ve been through; after all the promises you made me; how could you bring shame upon me this way?”
“Mum,” I whimpered.
“I swear with my life, Mum, I don’t know what he’s talking about.
I swear, I’m not pregnant. I’m still a vrgin. I didn’t sleep with anyone!”
“Really?” She scoffed.
“You didn’t sleep with anyone? So, the baby just jumped into you or what?”
“I don’t know,” I whimpered.
“I swear to God, Mum; I never had sx.
I seriously don’t know what the doctor’s talking about. I swear, I’m not pregnant.”
“You’ve made me break the promise I made to your father,” she said ruefully.
“You’ve destroyed it, Zoey. How could you bring such shame to me?
“I warned you; I spent most of the time talking to you about taking care of yourself.
What didn’t I do for you, Zoey? I…I know I don’t really have much. I know I’m not that rich, but I try all I can to make sure you don’t lack.
“Your education – I was working on it. Why did you have to ruin everything? Why Zoey? Why?”
I burst into more tears as the acrimony stirred up in me.
Oh God! What’s happening? I’m not pregnant. What’s going on?
“Get out of my sight, Zoey, please,” she backed me and said.
Oh God!
“Mum…”
“Please, I beg you, just leave for now. Please.”
I covered my mouth with my palm in shock.
Oh my God!
“Please, Zoey, leave!” She yelled without turning to look at me, and I didn’t realize when I ran out of the house.

Zoey’s POV:
I knocked softly on the door, hoping she would open soon because I wasn’t sure how much longer I could endure.
More tears streamed down my cheeks, and I wiped them away with sniffles.
After a while, I heard the door open, and I breathed a sigh of relief.
“Zoey?” She called, surprised to see me.
“Mandy,” I winced and burst into more tears.
She stared at me, shocked, for a while.
“What’s wrong? Why are you crying?” She asked, but I couldn’t utter a word. I just buried my face in her chest like a baby.

“Thank you,” I murmured as I handed her the empty glass after drinking the cold water.
She placed the glass on the table and came to sit beside me on the bed.
She sighed.
“So… the doctor said you’re pregnant?” She asked.
“Yes, but I swear, that’s not true,” I replied, raising my voice slightly.
“I swear with my life, Mandy; I’ve never had sx. I don’t know what he’s talking about. I can’t be pregnant without sx.”
She remained silent for a while.
“But… you’ve been experiencing pregnancy symptoms?” She broke the silence, and I blinked rapidly.
“Well, yes. I mean, I’ve been having morning sickness, dizziness, throwing up, always feeling hungry,” I paused and sighed.
“I don’t know, Mandy. I swear, I’m confused. I… I can’t be pregnant. You know me, Mandy; I don’t even have a boyfriend.
I haven’t had sx with anyone. So, how can I be pregnant, huh? And the worst part is, Mom wouldn’t listen to me.
“If only I had had sx, I wouldn’t have had a problem. But in this case, I’m still a vrgin. I don’t know what to do, Mandy.”
“This is really strange,” she mumbled.
“Wait a moment,” she suddenly said.
“Since you’re doubting the test, why don’t we go for a more reliable one?”
I sniffed and looked at her.
“What are you talking about?” I asked.
“Let’s go for a pregnancy scan, Zoey. I mean, a scan can’t lie.
It reveals what’s in your abdomen, and if there’s really a baby in it, we’ll be able to see it,” she said with a smile.
