REVENGE WITH LOVE : CHAPTER 21 – 30
CHAPTER 29 & 30.
A NEW DAWN.
The early morning rain had left the air feeling fresh and the pathways were decorated with puddles, while the trees still dripped with water. Venus called Tesiera to ask if they could go for an early morning run together, and she agreed nonchalantly.
It had been two weeks since Tesiera had made her second attempt on Dr. Kracus’s life, and two weeks since she found out he wasn’t her killer. Since then, she had only taken one mission, unlike before when she had a line of cases piled up that barely allowed her to breathe. Her handler had called her countless times, trying to find out the reason why the relentless Torturer was taking some time off, but Tesiera was as tight-lipped as she always was.
Out of breath, Venus suggested they take a rest, and Tesiera nodded in agreement, slowing to a stop. Venus was panting outright, “Thank fück. I’m so tired, I think I’m out of shape.”
“You’re not. We’ve been jogging for hours,” Tesiera responded, also breathless.
They assumed various stretching routines, and Venus broke the silence, saying, “I saw an ad a few days ago and did some research.”
“Research?” Tesiera lifted her knee and twisted her upper body three times.
“OBTN Security Company published an advertisement about a big company looking for a full-time lifeguard.”
“Alright,” Tesiera replied. A lifeguard was what they called a bodyguard who would work closely with their boss for twenty-four hours a day. A human shield. “You want to apply?”
“Nope.”
“So why are we having this conversation?” Tesiera asked reluctantly.
“The big company is Kingston Hotels and Resort,” Venus said.
Tesiera paused and lowered her leg, staring up at the tattooed blond in front of her.
Venus shrugged. “I figured you would want to know.”
“Why would you think that?” Tesiera asked, averting her eyes.
Venus let out a deep breath. “I don’t know. Maybe I thought you might still be feeling guilty about what happened, and you might still want to make up for what you did.”
“I’m fine. It’s all in the past,” Tesiera lied.
“No, you’re not,” Venus deadpanned. “Killers like us might not have a lot of morals to go around, but even people like us have principles we live by. I know you, Tesiera. It’s not about conscience now because people like us have very little of that. It’s about principles. You might like to convince yourself that you’ve put it all behind you, but that’ll be a lie because your principle is compromised, and until you set things back in place, you might never truly forget what happened.”
Tesiera’s brow narrowed. She had never pegged Venus as a perceptive person. Also, she hated that the woman was right.
“When I saw that ad, I thought of you instantly,” Venus continued. “I figured that it would help you get over what happened.”
“I’m not working as a lifeguard for anyone. I don’t work for anybody, period.”
“I know you don’t.”
Silence descended between them as they resumed jogging again. Tesiera tried to keep her mind away from the discussion they just had. After what happened that night, she’d decided to give it some time before restarting the investigation about her father’s killer. This time around, she vowed not to make any mistakes. She would catch Kracullian Kingston and she would make the bastard pay.
But what about the Kingston she almost killed? What about the Kingston she wronged?
Tesiera gritted her teeth. She hated that annoying voice as much as she hated the mistakes she’d made in the past.
“It’s pointless.” She said at last, slowing to a stop again.
“What is?” Venus asked.
“Being his lifeguard. It’s not even possible. I almost killed the man, what makes you think he would allow a person that almost killed him to guard his life? Kracusian Kingston is a smart man, he would never employ a person like me. An assassin that made two attempts at his life.”
“That’s right. A smart man would never do that. But, a man who commands chains of hotels and also happens to be a neurosurgeon must be smarter than most, and unpredictable at best. You wouldn’t know unless you tried. Who knows, he might hire you if you show him your sincerity. After all, you have the skill it takes to get the job done and he already knows that.”
“I doubt that. I failed the mission to kill the man. Twice. If anyone has a reason to doubt my skills, that’ll be him.” Tesiera stated.
Venus angled her head and thought about it, “True. But the man probably knows the reason you failed was because you attacked him in his territory, and he caught you off-guard twice. Not to mention that you never counted he would know a thing about fighting, but he turned out to be a skilled fighter.”
“All those shows incompetence. I would never hire me if I was in that position.” Tesiera deadpanned.
Venus chuckled, unable to help herself. “You’re a real piece of work, you know that?”
Tesiera said nothing, and resumed walking. Venus fell into steps with her, “Try first, Tesiera. Giving yourself all the reasons in the world it’ll never work out wouldn’t check out the fact that you never made an effort to try. Try and if you’re hired, you can work for a few months. Eliminate an enemy for him and resign. Puff, guilt disappears and order is restored.”
The rest of their work out, they didn’t say anything else about the issue. Venus went into details about the politician she was currently working for and all his shady ways, and Tesiera listened half-heartedly.
Hours later, when they were about to go their separate ways, she turned back to Venus, “Can you send me the link to the ad?”
Venus grinned knowingly. “Of course.”
REVENGE WITH LOVE : CHAPTER 21 – 30
Three days passed, Kracus was monitoring the progress of his patients when a knock came at his office door and Harvey’s familiar voice announced his presence. Kracus paused his paperwork and gave him permission to enter.
“Sir, we have arranged for a new set. A total of twenty people, and they will begin their training next week, and after two weeks, we will make our pick,” Harvey stated. Kracus rolled his eyes, and let out an exasperated groan.
Kracus was getting tired of the new bodyguard search and wished that it would end so that he could work with only Bose and Clinton. However, the recent attempts on his life had put Harvey’s pants in a twist. Hell, the man had securities all over the hospital at the moment.
“I’m getting tired of all this, Harvey.”
“I know, sir, but I assure you that this is a whole new process. This set came highly recommended.”
“If they end up being a disappointment again, I’ll put an end to the search and only work with Bose and Clinton. Those that are very skilled can be hired to guard the house and tighten security in the environment, but I won’t have an amateur invading my space twenty-four hours a day. It’s bad enough that securities follow me to work.”
Harvey let out a deep breath. “I apologize for how things have been going so far, but I won’t be comfortable if we don’t increase your personal bodyguard. You put me in charge of your security, and it’s my duty to keep you safe. I’ll resign from being Alex Graham’s personal bodyguard in a heartbeat if it means that-”
“Don’t do that,” Kracus interrupted, shaking his head. “Graham’s life is as important as mine. He’s the most capable hand when it comes to running the company, and if anything happens to that man, I would have to resign and go back to the company. I feel better knowing that you’re his personal bodyguard.”
“I know that, sir. But you’re the one Carter Walter is after, not the current CEO of the company,” Harvey said. He paused and continued, “If this doesn’t work, you’ll have to move around with an entourage.”
Kracus shook his head firmly. “You know how I feel about that. You seem to forget that I can take care of myself.”
“I can’t forget that. But we can never be too careful. An added security can never hurt. It’s a necessity.”
Kracus let out a sigh, his hand leaving his chin to massage his aching temples. It had been an overwhelming month, a rollercoaster from work at the hospital to getting attacked repeatedly.
“Fine, you can extend the search,” Kracus finally caved and agreed.
Just as Harvey was about to speak, commotion filled the air.
“What’s going on?” Kracus furrowed his brows.
Harvey was already on his feet. “I will go and find out.” He was almost at the door when it opened, and Clinton hurried in.
“Sorry to interrupt, boss, but she’s here,” Clinton announced with urgency.
“Who’s here?” Harvey inquired. From the pissed-off expression on Clinton’s face, Kracus was beginning to get an idea who it was.
“The female assassin. That Torturer,” Clinton confirmed his thoughts.
“She’s got some nerve to come here,” Harvey said, his eyes narrowed in anger. “What the hell is she doing here?”
“I have no idea but our team is on her. They attacked her, she laid two guards unconscious but the others were able to overpower her. This time around, she’s not getting away.” Clinton narrated.
Just then, the door opened and three security men entered, dragging Tesiera Rinderson with them.
Kracus blinked, taken aback by the scene. What the hell was she doing here? That baffled him as much as her easy capture did.
Ares, one of his security officers, pressed her shoulder hard, forcing her to kneel. “We caught her trying to invade the property.” He reported.
Kracus’s brows shot up.
Tesiera snorted, “Dumbass,” she muttered.
Ares’ jaw tightened. He cracked his fist, “What did you just call me?”
“Who the hell invades an enemy’s heavily guarded property by walking through the door in broad daylight?” She shook her head and simply repeated, “Dumbass.”
Ares growled and advanced on her.
“Ares,” Kracus called his name; a low command.
The security stopped instantly, glared at the woman dressed in leather and stepped back. “Forgive me, sir.”
Kracus looked at Tesiera, the red–haired woman who had come into his life like a wild tornado, causing turbulence and turning his life into an upheaval in a span of just two months. Speaking of red hair, he noted that she had re–dyed her hair; the striking red color was now a few shades higher and she had added black highlights.
But instead of the usual icy hatred, her face was simply without expression. As for her intriguing beauty, it was unchanging and without a fault. She was still as gorgeous and enigmatically mysterious as she was the very first night he saw her, standing in his bedroom dressed like an avenging Angel, with knives in her hands.
What the hell was she doing here?
He didn’t think she was here to attack him, unlike what his men thought.
“Let her go.” he ordered the security men.
They were surprised but they stepped away from her. Tesiera rose, hiding her own surprise. She’d half-expected him to order them to deal with her or something along those lines. Definitely not to simply let her go.
“What are you doing here?” He asked her, bluntly.
“I’d like to speak with you,” she looked around, “In private.”
He simply stared at her.
In a low voice he almost wouldn’t have heard if he wasn’t so attentive to her, she added, “Please,”
“Leave us. All of you, leave.” Kracus ordered at last, holding eye contact with her.
“Boss, you can’t possibly mean—“
“Leave, Clinton,” he stated firmly, cutting Clinton off. He glanced at his Chief of Security, “You too, Harvey.”
“Alright boss. We will be outside. Call if you need anything.” Harvey stated.
His men mean well, but most times, they really do forget that he can take care of himself. He simply nodded. They all stepped out of the office begrudgingly, and he was finally alone with her.
She pulled her hair away from her face and his eyes followed the movement. The shoulder-length hair wasn’t pulled up in her signature ponytails today, instead it was loose, cascaded down her back like a silken waterfall.
It didn’t get past Kracus’s notice that he paid much too attention to the woman. Dangerous lines. It’s time to send the woman away.
“What exactly are you doing here? I want the truth.” he inquired again, leaning back on his chair and crossing his arms, “You escaped at night, probably to avoid being punished. So, why did you walk in here willingly?”
For a moment, he caught the look of indecision on her face. But a few seconds later, it was replaced with resolve. She walked closer to his table and stopped in front of him.
Then, she lowered her head in a bow, “I want to apply for the position of being your full-time lifeguard,” a pause, “sir.”
