Chapter 8

Oliver was returning from the hotel feeling sad about Isobel leaving when two men In black ran towards him. Holding onto him.

“What are you doing? Let me go!”He yelled as he tried to pull away but the two wouldn’t even budge.

“Hold onto him tightly” on hearing that familiar voice. He looked up to see his father walking towards them.

It’s been a year since he saw him. How on earth did he find him when he had been careful in hiding his whereabouts.

The wedding. Isobel wedding had been a big one. Reporters who had came to take photos and also to get juicy tips about the wedding might have recognise him.

“What are you doing here father?”He asked

“To take you home. It’s been a year since you left home wanting to live on your own. It’s time you come back home”Ben Hayes stated as he stared at a replica of himself.

“Am not going…..”

“You have no choice! Am not getting younger Oliver. The company needs you to step up and as my son and heir you have to….”

“I told you that I have no interest in your money or company. I will make it on my own”Oliver said cutting off his father too.

“And have you achieved that? You’ve been working as a part timer here. I did my findings and you are still dirt poor”His father said.

“Don’t rely a lot on your source cause you don’t know what have been doing here for a whole year”Oliver replied.

“Well whatever you have been doing is not that important to the duties you have as my heir. So it’s time you come back and handle things.

If you still insist on staying here. I will have no choice but to make this island disappear. You know I have the power and wealth to do that!”His father threatened.

“Am no longer a kid. You can’t keep on threatening me like this!”He yelled at him.

“Talking to you will only be a waste of time. Threatening you seems to work”His father stated.

“Get him into the car!” He added as the guards began to pull Oliver towards the car.

“I still have to get my things”Oliver said.

“I already have it with me. Let’s just……”

“Who gave you my stuff? Did you go to where I live?”he asked interrupting his father.

“Of course. That was the first place I went to see you. Why do you ask? Is it because of that girl?” Ben Hayes asked.

“Did you see Isobel? “Oliver asked and he nodded.

“I did and she even helped me pack up your stuff”

“What did you tell her? What did you say to make her leave?” Oliver asked.

“I didn’t say a thing. I even left her there at your bedsit. Did she leave?”He asked.

“When I went there. She was no longer there”Oliver confirmed.

“She’s wiser than I thought. She would have left anyway since her family is now facing financial trouble” he said as he got into the car while the guards pushed Oliver into the car.

“What sort of financial trouble?”Oliver asked.

“I don’t know much about it but I do know that they are currently dealing with being bankrupt. Are you worried because of that girl?”His father asked when he saw the worried look on his face.

“From what I know. Isobel Dane is not someone of your league. You know you are only…..”

“Don’t say it father!”Oliver yelled at him.

“I know that she is not someone of my league. That’s why I never told her how I felt”Oliver muttered the last part to himself looking a bit sad.

“Just forget about her. Am sure that she will also do the same. So let’s go back to the city and start afresh”His father said as the driver began to drive.

Oliver resigned himself to being taken back and that’s only because of Isobel. He has to find her and offer her his help. If they are going through bankruptcy. He could help. He thought as the car kept going to the sea where their yatch is waiting to take them.

A YEAR LATER

(NEW YORK CITY)

“You call this a proposal? This is thrash!” Oliver yelled at the two employees who had come to submit a file to him.

“We are sorry sir”They both said quickly.

“Sorry? If saying sorry is all you know how to do then I suggest you quit. The company doesn’t need workers like you!”He said as he threw the file away.

The door opened and a girl walked in. Starring at Oliver and the two Frightened employees. She told them to leave while she stayed to pacify Oliver.

“Having a bad day again?” Melissa Grand asked as she took a seat without waiting for Oliver permission.

“Just go away if you are going to annoy me”Oliver replied.

“Ouch! That hurts”She said as she smiled at him.

“Seriously you should try to cool down your temper. All the employees are scared of you. Your father wasn’t this scary”She added.

“Really? Then I better quit and let my father take over again”Oliver replied.

“You don’t have to do that and what am trying to say now is that you shouldnt get angry at them and scare them. Rather you should be more approachable and even try being friends with them”Melissa said.

“Just like you are friends with your colleagues?”Oliver asked.

“Am different from you. Am just an executive here while you are the president. When last have you taken them out for company dinner?”She asked and when he didn’t reply she continued.

“See! Am more better than you because I do that all the time. Your being grumpy has to do with her right?”

“What did they say this time around?”Melissa added when he still didn’t say any other thing.

“Still the same result. They couldn’t find her”Oliver replied.

It’s been a year since he has been looking for Isobel and every attempt on his search have been futile.

“Isobel is really a lucky girl”Melissa said suddenly.

“Why do you say that?”Oliver asked.

“She has someone who is desperately looking for her right here. It’s been a year and he is still looking. That shows how much he is inlove with her. She’s one lucky girl”Melissa replied.

“You know there are times when I regret telling you about her” Oliver said.

“You have no one else to talk to. After all am your only friend. Best friend at that”She said earning a smile from him.

“That’s it. You should always smile like that. This isn’t the first time you get the same reply on Isobel. You should be used to it by now and from my own point of view. I think Isobel doesn’t want to be found. So why not stop with this search”Melissa suggested.

“If you are just going to tell me to give up. Then you better leave”Oliver said

“Am not telling you to give up. I just don’t like you stressing yourself. Your health comes first to me”Melissa said this taking hold of his hand.

“I know. Afterall you are the only friend who worries about me”He replied as he pulled his hand away not noticing the look on Melissa face as he did that.

“You remember that am having another blind date tomorrow?”He asked as he stood up.

“How can I forget when I have to be there with you”Melissa replied.

“If it’s getting to be a strain on you. You should let me know. I will find a way to get out of the blind date and……”

“Its not a strain. I enjoy pretending to be your girlfriend while we scare those ladies off. It’s fun” Melissa replied.

“Fine then. I will be waiting at the supposed place for the date. Call me when you get there”He said as he began to leave.

“Where are you off to?”She asked.

“Am having dinner with dad. Have got to let him know that it is time”He stated.

“Really? Make sure you tell him and remember that am in this with you”Melissa said beaming a smile at him. A smile which he returned before leaving the office.

Oliver got home late and his father along with his step mother were already having dinner when he arrived.

“You’ve been coming home late these days. Any problem with the company?” Chris Hayes asked.

“No problem”Oliver replied.

“Then is it a girl problem? “Victoria Hayes. His stepmother who hated him asked as she bit into her steak.

“I heard from minister Ray daughter that you had arrived with another girl for the blinddate?”Victoria added when he didn’t reply.

“Really? Do you have someone you are interested in?”His father asked.

“Honey. It would be great if he really had someone he is interested in but the girl he had taken on the date turned out to be Melissa. That friend of his. Seems like he is doing this to get rid of the ladies I had set up for him”Victoria said.

“Is this true ?”His father asked and instead of replying. Oliver stood up.

“Have just lost my appetite”He said as he turned to leave.

“What is wrong with you? It’s been a year and I hardly see you with a girl apart from Melissa whom am sure you have no feeling for. I got Victoria to set you up with those girls thinking you might pick one out of them but you keep on…..”

“I never ask you to do that. Am fine being on my own”Oliver replied interrupting his father again.

“It’s because of her right? You are still stuck on that Isobel?”His father asked.

“Think whatever you want father. I will keep on going to the dates because of the ladies fathers who invested in your company but don’t count on anything else and before I forget. I will be resigning from your company”Oliver replied.

“What nonsense are you spewing?”

“It’s not Nonsense. I made enough money to build my company and for months it’s been running without me.

Am going there to see things through. So you better look for someone else to take charge of your company” He said making his father look pale.

“My company is your inheritance. When will you understand that?”His father yelled at him.

“It has never been mine father and I don’t need any inheritance from you. Someone else might do”He said giving his step mother an angry look before leaving the room.

??THE NEXT DAY ??

“Where are you?”Oliver asked as he stood in the lobby of the hotel where he would be meeting his blind date.

“I will be there soon”Melissa replied on the phone.

“Are you sure? She’s here already”Oliver stated.

“Stop reprimanding me! I will be there soon,, I can see the hotel already. I will be there to……Oh my God!!!!” Melissa yelled out suddenly.

“What’s wrong?”Oliver asked.

“I think….I think I just klled someone”Melissa said to him on the phone.

“What should I do Oliver? He is not getting up and…..I really klled him” Melissa rushed this out.

“Take it easy Melissa. Where are you right now?”He asked.

“I don’t know…..close to the hotel”Melissa replied

“Am on my way then”Oliver said as he switched off his phone,, running out of the hotel.

He stopped when he noticed a crowd. Recognising Melissa car. He ran there and Melissa was still sitted in the car looking pale and scared.

He moved towards the person that has been hit. Telling the crowd to call for help.

The injured person had his face turned on to the floor and when he turned him over, he was surprised to see who it was.

“Isobel” he called as he pulled her unconscious body into his arms.

“Isobel” he called again and when there was no response from her. He turned to the crowd looking very worried.

“Call for help Quickly!!!”He yelled at them.
