BRITTANY’S POV

“He’s hitting you?” I asked in shock.

My mom said nothing.

“Answer me, mom!”

“I…discovered he was cheating and confronted him about it but…he slapped me. He was angry and I won’t blame him”

“Mom!” I shook my head disappointedly. “He hits you and you are still defending him. Really, mom?”

She just bowed down her head.

“How long have he been doing it?” I asked.

“Brittany. It doesn’t matter. What…”

I interrupted. “Just let me know”

“Before you got married” she said and my eyes widened at the realization. So he do hit her while I was still under their roof and I knew nothing about it. My mom really did a great job in covering it up.

“Are you kidding me! And you are still with him”

“Brittany, he only does it when I annoy him”

“He is cheating on you, mom”

“He will change”

“Mom!!”
I can’t believe she is saying this right now. “You do know domestic violence is a crime right?” I told her.

“It is But this is a different situation”

“How is it different??”

“Brittany. Just listen to me. Your father isn’t like you. Don’t hate on him or anything. He is just going through a phase and he would come around. Marriage isn’t something you leave just like that.”

“Okay then. Until he klls you”

“Don’t say that”

I looked away. “I’m leaving soon”

“No. Please stay. I want to spend some time with you”

About an hour later

I was seated opposite my mom in the dining room with my mom eating the dish she prepared.

I must confess. I miss her. I miss the house. I miss everything.

“How is your husband?” She asked and I zoned out as Hayden’s thought came into my mind.

It wasn’t the usual arranged marriage. Hayden have been nothing but good to me but what have I done?
I have only been rude to him.

“He isn’t what I was expecting, he is actually caring, loving and…” I stopped when I realized what I was saying.

I looked at my mom and she was grinning.

“It isn’t what you think. I don’t love him”

“But you sound like you do”

“Mom, honestly, I don’t know. I don’t know if I feel anything for him or not and it’s just so complicated. I don’t want to love him. I…”

She cuts me off. “Why?”

“I don’t know because I’m not ready?”

“Brit! There isn’t a specific time to be ready for love. Love comes natural. You don’t decide when to love someone.”

“I guess” I shrugged.

“Just do what you know is the right thing to do. Don’t lose him”

I just nods and continued eating as I thought of her words.

After eating, we retired to the living room. I stared at my mom and wish I can smack my dad on the face for doing this to her.

She already believed “he was going through a phase” and it’s better I don’t interfere.

“I attend Hilton now” I started. “I couldn’t get into Harvard so Hayden suggested I try Hilton and then I would try Harvard again next session”

“Why don’t you just stay in Hilton?”

Why do everyone keep on saying this!!

“I can’t.” I simply said and she just nodded.

“So how is the school?”

“Pretty good. I only have two friends for now”

We continued talking and shortly, we started laughing as we talked about more fun things.

I realized how much I have missed my mom. A tear dropped from my eyes but I quickly clean it before my mom would see it.

HAYDEN’s POV

I Left work super early. I couldn’t concentrate as I kept doing everything at the office the wrong way. So I just decided to go home.

I got home shortly and the first thing I noticed is the car Brittany uses isn’t in the compound.

I entered the house and went straight to the bedroom.

After freshening up, I went to the living room and dialed Jacob’s number.

He picked almost immediately.

“Where are you?” I asked.

“Brittany asked me to take her to her parents house and she is still there”

“Okay” I said and dropped the call. I really want to see her and at the same time, I don’t want to.

Her words…I kept remembering them. Was it a mistake marrying her?

I closed my eyes trying to get the thoughts off my head.

I heard a feminine voice which made me lapse back into consciousness.

I looked up to see nana, one of the maids and I gave her a questioning look.

“I just want to ask if you need anything” she said tucking her hair behind her ear.

“No” I answered blankly.

“Oh.” She said still standing there.

“Is there anything you need?” I asked.

“Yes. I mean no” she said hurriedly and she looked nervous.

I nodded and looked away from her.

When I turned to look at her, she was still there staring at me. She caught me and scratches her hair embarrassedly and walked away.

“Whatever that is” I utter to myself.

I brought out my phone and it was still a bit early. Almost 5pm.

I went to my contacts and clicked on Brittany’s contact.

I saved it as “MY LITTLE WIFE”.

I smiled and stared at it for as long as I could.

Different thoughts running in my head but there was nothing I could do.

My phone started ringing. It was Layla. We haven’t been on the talking terms ever since the last time she came to my office.

I picked nevertheless.

“Hello” She said.

“Hi”

“Where are you? I went to your company and was told you left already”

“Yeah. Any problem?”

“Yes, no. I want to talk to you”

“Okay…?”

“Where are you?”

“Is that what you want to say?”

“No. Why are your responses cold?” She asked.

“They are not”

“They are. I thought we are still friends”

“I never said we aren’t”

“Are you still angry with me about the other day?”

“No”

“Okay. So where are you?”

“Home. What’s wrong?”

“Oh. I…want to work in your company”

“Huh”

“Yes”

“What about your dad’s company?”

“I talked to him and he doesn’t have a problem with it”

I scrunched my brows. Wasn’t it the same Layla that told me her father wants her to take over his company.

“You can come over to the company tomorrow. We will have a proper interview” i said.

“Okay, thanks H!” She said excitedly.
