Chapter 39

JAYDEN’S POV

“The team misses you man. Couch was disappointed at first but he got over it.” Dylan says before gulping down the vodka shot.

I look at the dancing bodies in front of me trying not to think about anything.

I had come to the club to clear up my mind but I bumped into Dylan. After I left the team I had never contacted anyone else since I was engrossed in finding Leo’s ki llers who turned up to be the people I trusted enough to be around Leo.

My grip on the glass intensifies before I feel it being taken away. I look up to find Dylan looking at me with what I imagine to be pity. Irritation grows at the same time I want to hit something so bad.

“What?” I bark at him and he scoffs.
“You’ve changed man. You used to be this cool easy going Jayden.

You used to be the cool basketball star.” He says and I feel my features harden and for the first time he looks at me differently.

“I’m not that Jayden anymore. Don’t think you know me.” I say. Dylan looks at me with no expression and I take my glass from the table and continue sipping my drink.

“Hey baby.” A voice purrs beside me and I see a hot girl putting a hand on my bicep. I don’t say anything and she takes that as invitation and she moves in front of me then sits on my lap. I look at Dylan to find him looking at us deep in thought.

“I’m Kim. What’s your name sexy?” She says in a low voice and if this was months ago, I’d have started kssing her but I’m not in the mood.

“I’m not interested.” I say and stand immediately pushing the girl and I start walking away without a care. Sht! I’m drunk. I stagger to the door but when I almost lose my balance, I feel a hand hold me. I look up to see Dylan and I push him away.

“I’m fine dammit.” I say and continue walking. “A cab. I need a cab.” I tell myself as I walk to the road but Dylan stops me. He insists on taking me home and I don’t argue because I’m so tired.

***************

“I can’t believe you’d do this to yourself Jayden.” I hear my mother’s voice say before water is spinkled on me. I wake up as fast as I can and see my mother standing there with a sprinkler.

“What the h’ll mother?” I ask still confused. I look around and notice I’m in the bathroom at home. My head hurts.

“I raised you better than this. You can’t just waste your life drinking away.” She scolds and more water is sprinkled onto my face. I raise my hand to block the water but it’s too much.

“Mum. Stop dmmit!” I say and seconds later she stops. I glare at her and she lets out a breath
“Take a bath. You stink and after this you and I have a talk. You have some serious explaining to do young man.” She says before walking to the door. She stands for a second and looks at me.

“Chap chap!” She says and I move slightly in my wet clothes.

Get me some painkillers.” I say before she completely shuts the door.

I get out of the bathroom ten minutes later feeling better even though my head is still pounding. I walk into my room and straight into my closet and take a pair basketball shorts and a t-shirt.

I find my mother sitting and reading some papers as Leah walks in with a cup of coffee. I look at her and find she smiling and I smile back at her.

“Here you go son.” She says handing over the cup and I thank her. I see a body next to her and I turn to see Dylan looking at me.

“Thanks.” I mutter lowly after Leah leaves.
“No problem.” He says and I look towards my mother.
“What time is it?”

“One a.m.” Dylan says and I look at him confused.

“You can stay in the same room.” I offer but he shakes his head. Dylan used to come oftenly and always used the same guest room.
“No, I’ll be leaving. Just making sure you’re okay. You seemed pretty… bad back then.”

He says and I look away as I take a sip of the amazing coffee.
“I should get going.” I give a curt nod. He tells my mother that he’s leaving and she mutters a thank you. I follow him to the door.

“You left the team but that doesn’t mean we stopped being there for each other.” Dylan starts as soon as we step outside. “We knew each other before it bro and you pushing me away isn’t fair man.” He says and I look away.

“Yeah. I know and I’m sorry. I’ll text you.” I say and he nods. I gesture for a handshake and he gives me almost reluctantly.

I get into the house after Dylan leaves and start walking to the stairs but my mother’s voice stops me.
“And where are you going?” She asks.
“To sleep.” I say but she glares at me. I walk to a seat opposite her irritated.

I sit for a minute but no one says anything. I look at my mother to find her looking at me.
“What is wrong?” My mother asks suddenly and my eyes shoot to her once again. She gets up, walks towards me and kneels in front of me.

“I don’t deserve ‘ the best mother of the year’ award or ‘the best grandmother award’ but I just wanted to tell you I care. I might seem distant, cold, emotionless or even heartless but you and Linda are the only family I’m left with.

I’m not asking for forgiveness because I don’t deserve it but what I’m asking is for you to talk to me.” She says and I look at her coldly.

And what could have brought the miraculous change of heart mother?” I spit.

“A lot of things but I realized that we don’t know what the future holds. I broke up with Mike two weeks ago and now I want to fight for my children.” She says before standing.

I look at her and I suddenly how she’s weaker than she always is.

“I… ” I search for words to say but I end up blank. She gives me a small smile and I look at her shocked. Did Sarah Williams just smile at me?

“You don’t have to say anything… son.” She says moving closer to me. She takes my hands in hers and it feels so uncomfortable and foreign at first but it’s a feeling I get used to at once.

This are one of the times I’ve always wished for since my dad died. I might be a grown a$s man but I’ve always look up to my mother.

I used to be jealous of Jake since he was mom’s favorite and so I would try to be better. My brother excelled in studies and so I excelled in my games. When he wasn’t interested in my mother’s fashion business, I studied business to take over but I never saw if my mother noticed.

I even dated Alexis or Julia or whatever her name is because my mother liked her but it wasn’t enough.

“I need to get to bed.” I say and she looks away before she nods.

“You’re in love. Fight for her. She’s a fragile scared girl who needs to be loved.” She says and I turn to her.

“Who?” I ask narrowing my eyes. It can’t possibly be ‘Alexis’ she’s talking about.)
“Jada. The nanny of course.” She says and I look at her curiously.

“You had me followed?” I ask suddenly angry. How much does she know?
“Don’t worry, I only had to see your interaction with her once to know everything. You even called me Jada before you passed out.” She explains and I scoff.

“Stay out of my business.” I say and walk to my room. I need to sleep. I might be imagining this night for all I know.

I get into my room as my mom’s words repeat inside my head. I’ve know for some time that I’ve fallen for the cold beautiful woman. I saw her last three months ago when I told her about Ryan and I could say we might have bonded but she switched off later and we ended up saying hurtful words.

One step forward, ten steps backwards.
I walk to the heap of wet clothes and take out my phone. “Good thing it’s waterproof.” I complain as I try to switch it on.
Sydney K.

Can’t reach Jada. Tell her Ivy Armstrong is heading her way with a group.

Fk!
