A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL : CHAPTER 51 – 60
The world continued to move around us—the police taking pictures, talking to witnesses, marking off the crime scene—but in that moment, it felt like Liam and I were the only two people in the universe. I clung to him, my hands gripping the fabric of his shirt like he was the only thing keeping me tethered to reality.
Time passed in a blur. Eventually, the police let me go, satisfied with my answers for now, and Liam led me away from the scene. His arm was wrapped around my shoulders, guiding me, supporting me, as we walked away from the flashing lights and the whispers of the neighbors. I wasn’t sure where we were going until I saw his apartment building looming ahead.
Liam didn’t say anything as he opened the door and led me inside. The warmth of his apartment hit me, but it did nothing to thaw the cold I felt deep in my bones. I was still shivering, my body on autopilot as he guided me to the couch.
“I’ll get you some clothes,” he said softly, disappearing down the hall. I sat there, staring blankly at the coffee table in front of me. My mind was racing, but I couldn’t grasp onto any one thought long enough to make sense of it. It all felt so surreal, like I was trapped in a nightmare I couldn’t wake up from.
Liam returned with a pair of sweatpants and a hoodie. He handed them to me, his eyes full of concern. “Here. You can change in the bathroom.”
I nodded, not trusting myself to speak, and took the clothes from him. I made my way to the bathroom, moving slowly, like I was wading through thick water. Once inside, I stripped off the towel and pulled on the sweatpants and hoodie. They were too big, but they were warm and soft, and for a moment, I let myself sink into the comfort of them.
When I returned to the living room, Liam was waiting for me with a steaming cup of coffee in his hands. He handed it to me with a small, encouraging smile. “Here. Drink this.”
I took the cup, my hands trembling as I wrapped them around the warmth. The scent of the coffee was comforting, familiar, but I couldn’t bring myself to take a sip. I just stared into the dark liquid, my mind still reeling.
Liam sat down next to me, his presence a steady anchor in the storm of emotions swirling inside me. “Do you want me to leave you alone to rest?” he asked, his voice gentle.
I shook my head, my voice barely a whisper as I mumbled, “Don’t go. Please, don’t leave me.” Tears welled up in my eyes again, and I set the coffee cup down on the table, reaching for Liam’s hand. “I’m scared, Liam. Whoever did this… what if they come for me next?”
Liam’s eyes softened, and he squeezed my hand gently. “I won’t let anything happen to you, Selene,” he promised, his voice firm. “I’m here. I won’t leave you.”
I looked up at him, tears blurring my vision. His face was so close, his expression so full of care and concern. He had always been there for me, always looked out for me, even when no one else did.
“Liam…” I whispered, my voice trembling.
His gaze met mine, and for a moment, the world seemed to stand still. The space between us felt charged, like something unspoken had been lingering there for a long time, waiting for this moment.
Before I could stop myself, I closed the gap between us. My lips pressed against his, soft and hesitant at first, but then firmer, more certain.
For a brief second, the chaos in my mind quieted, and all I could feel was the warmth of his mouth on mine.
Liam stiffened in surprise, but after a heartbeat, he kissed me back, his hand gently cupping my cheek as he deepened the kiss.
It was soft, tender, and full of emotions I couldn’t begin to name. For the first time all night, I felt something other than numbness or fear.
But then, just as quickly as it had started, the kiss ended. I pulled away, breathless, my heart pounding in my chest.
I didn’t know what to say, didn’t know how to explain what had just happened. All I knew was that in that moment, I needed Liam more than anything else in the world.
He looked at me, his eyes searching mine, but he didn’t say anything. Instead, he just pulled me into his arms again, holding me close. “It’s going to be okay,” he whispered, his voice soft and reassuring. “You’re not alone, Selene. I’m here.”
I closed my eyes, resting my head against his chest. For now, I let myself believe him.
