Chapter Twelve
GRACE POV
It was Monday. I woke up yawning loudly but darn it, I wasn’t satisfied with the sleep I got.
I stretched and laid comfortably but when I caught the time on my wall clock, I immediately stood, throwing my blanket away from my body.
The time was surprisedly 7:48am. Like…what the hell? How is that possible?
Dmn! I slept quite late on bed due to my endless coughs and sneezes. I had to take my medicines and I remember falling asleep at 3am but then how did the time rush down to 7:48am.
You got to be kidding me, Clock!
I quickly ran to my bathroom before brushing my teeth. I brushed for ten seconds before I began pulling off my clothes. Trust me, I had to hurry, Dad and Dave must be waiting for me.
Oh, Lord!
I took a quick bath before putting on any clothes I could set my eyes on.
Ah! I even forgot to apply a moisturizing cream on my skin but now, I don’t have the time for that.
I put on a dark shoe before combing my hair, then I grabbed my backpack and headed downstairs but I almost bumped into Dave on the stair.
“Dave?”.I breathe out heavily. “How are you?”.
Only God knows that wasn’t the question I wanted to ask. I wanted to ask something like ‘Hope dad is not angry?’ Or ‘How long have you guys been waiting for me?’.
Yeah, I know the first question in my mind sounds stupid cause well, I know dad must be angry. He is quite impatient!
“Grace, what took you so long?”.He asked ignoring my question.
“I…..”.He cut me off obviously impatient.
“There is no time for words Grace, we should go to the living room. Dad is waiting for you!”.He added and began walking away while I followed after him looking a bit scared.
Dad is waiting for me? Does that mean he is waiting to punish ms or what?
I fondled with my fingers nervously as we walked and soon enough, we got to the living room.
I saw dad sitting on a sofa sipping a juice in front of him, he wasn’t frowning nor was he smiling as he glanced at the TV which was displaying some news.
Ah, news! So boring…
I and Dave got closer to him and as soon as he noticed our presence, he stared at us.
“Grace”.He called, almost in a whisper. “What took you so long”.
I was surprised cause I didn’t expect dad’s tone to be low and soft. I expected him to be yelling and glaring at me but surprisedly, he was calm.
“I didn’t s..leep at night…my ast..hmatic att..ack…coughs..sneeze. I didn’t sleep at night, am sorry”.I didn’t know why I was stammering but still I believe he understood me because he nodded his head and took his car keys.
“Come on, you guys are so late. We should get going”.He voiced out and walked away while we followed after him.
HER ADVERSITY: Chapter 11 – 20
The ride to our school didn’t take long cause we actually reached the school before ten minutes.
Mr Lucas didn’t come to take us to school today because he called dad on phone last night to inform him about his sudden sickness but he promised to come pick us after school.
I got out of the car so did Dave before we waved cheerfully at dad who was staring at us.
“Study hard, sweeties”.He smiled and drove the car away.
Hmm..
I turned to Dave and we began walking towards the school gate. We showed the security men our school ID cards before we were allowed into the school.
“Did you hear the news?”.Dave scoffed turning to me while we walked.
“News…which news?”.I asked, confused.
“Oh! So you are not aware. The news displayed on TV this morning and I almost felt my head spin”.He sighed with a hint of sadness in his voice.
“What is the news all about?”.I wasn’t a fan of news or something but this got me curious.
“Am sure you will be informed in class by your classmates or any teacher so don’t worry”.He voiced out and took the path to his class and I frowned slightly heading to mine.
What’s this news all about, huh?
I got to class and as usual, I walked to Jeanann’s seat only to see Jeanann sitting on it. She was chewing a bubble gum and at the same time staring at her beautiful manicured fingernails.
“Hi Jean”.I said coldly and sat at a little far distance from her. Come on! She was rude to me last week Friday.
“Grace, are you angry at me?”.She asked looking so sorry.
“Why would I be?”.I spoke out angrily, looking surprised. Is Jeanann talking to me?
“Am sorry, okay? Sincerely, I am sorry. I don’t know what the hell got into me on Friday, I just transferred all my aggression on everyone who talked to me and now am apologizing cause I knew I did the wrong thing. Am sorry Grace”.She apologized but I shook my head.
“I can’t forgive you, Jean”.I said and she gasped.
“Why? I apologized, you should forgive me”.She said looking like she couldn’t believe what I was saying.
“Look Jean! You are acting like am the only one you wronged on Friday, what about the nurse you spoke rudely to? What about her?! You hurt her feelings and am sorry but I wouldn’t forgive you until you apologize to her”.I said and she scowled.
“Fine! I will go apologize to her”.She said but I wasn’t yet sure. She didn’t sound sincere.
“Promise?”.I asked and she nodded.
“Yeah promise”.She said with a shrug and I smiled.
“Now, I forgive you Jean”.I said and she smirked before mouthing a ‘thanks’ to me.
I sighed and began bringing out my writing materials for the first lesson we are having today but suddenly my pen fell.
In the process of picking it up, I saw Dylan staring at me from his seat which was behind Jeanann’s seat.
This time he didn’t removed his glance on me neither did I.
