THE EXCHANGE
Episode 38
After the burial, Bola, the family lawyers & Segun looked into all the properties that BabaT had inherited & found out all that was left was the house they had received as wedding gift & his car; even those were going to be repossessed by the loan sharks from whom BabaT had borrowed huge sums of money to fund his drug addiction & that was the end of his fake lifestyle he lived. Sandra who had thought BabaT was going to marry her was also at the burial last Friday & she had found out there were 3 other women in his life with the same promise; they had all realised they had wasted their lives waiting on BabaT & he wasn’t even worth the coffin in which he was buried. Sandra was the most bitter & she blamed Toun for her situation especially when she realised that the porshe Salon which was the talk of the town belonged to BabaT’s ex-wife. She was filled with bitter jealousy; how she must have laughed at us when we had called her an literate: Sandra thought & to think that with her masters degree in business & financial management, from a reputable university in England, was still slaving away working for a company, while this literate is sitting on a multi million Naira enterprise. What do I have to show for staying with BabaT for the past 7 years taking all his insults & abuse? Just a car she thought bitterly as she looked at Toun again standing there in her dark shades, surrounded by her children, receiving condolences from sympathise. That should have been me Sandra thought & as she turned away, she saw one of her rivals who shared BabaT with her & thought even these fools were expecting to reap where they had not sown but as she was deep in her thoughts of self pity, one of BabaT’s friends walked up to her & asked a penny for her thoughts, she turned & saw Fola, one of BabaT’s close friend, he was a junior executive in the bank where he worked. She smiled sweetly at him, looking deeply into his eyes, fluttered her lashes at him & in a seductive voice answered him, “my thoughts are worth more than a penny”. Fola was a 42yr old divorcee with two children who stayed with their mother so he was a good catch & Sandra was not going to let the opportunity slip by her so she pushed all thoughts of BabaT out of her mind & focused on conquering her new project. She was already 37 & her biological clock was fast ticking.
After everything about BabaT’s financial situation had been put to rest, they returned to London & the children back to school. Toun stayed for a month & after Ayomide’s 13th birthday, she to Nigeria & into Tunji’s waiting arms. They had been planning their wedding after 2 years of dating before BabaT’s demise so they had to put the arrangement on hold but Toun’s mother said time was no longer on their side & they should just have a quiet wedding & make all the noise they wanted after their baby is born. So three months after BabaT died, Toun wedded Tunji. Thankfully, they had the ceremony in Abeokuta bcos the turn out of guests were unimaginable. Their small Church could not seat half of the guests so they had to get a mammoth canopy for the guests who could not come in. The expatriates with whom Tunji worked & most of the members of staff where in attendance both for the engagement|traditional marriage & the Church wedding. Once again, Toun had closed down the city of Abeokuta, but this time, it was a celebration welcomed by all.
The next day, they left for the Caribbean’s for their one month long honeymoon. Granny had sent her blessings but couldn’t be in attendance for obvious reasons. Most of their gifts were in cash & bank transfers bcos there no physical gift that will make any serious meaning to the couples who were already multi millionaires in their various respects & Tunji wasn’t a millionaire only in Naira but in dollars also. All the who is who in the oil world was represented & the wedding was gloriously blessed. Tunji decided to make Lagos his base bcos of Toun’s business so he acquired a 5 bedroom duplex with a penthouse built on an acre of land, with a pool, a pool house, a tennis court & a beautiful garden. There was also a play area for the children he purposed they would have. The workers worked tirelessly to put everything in order before the arrival of the 2 lovebirds….
