THE MIRACLE I NEED : Episode 81 – 90
EPISODE 86
Kathleen had no idea what had touched Pete, but she was grateful since he didn’t bother her or say anything to her for the rest of the service. Neither of them bothered standing up as first timers, so immediately the service ended they all went outside.
“Daddy I like my class. They gave us snacks and they taught us about the Bible.” Amanda announced excitedly as she ran up to her father carrying a plastic bottle of Nutri milk and a wrapped donut.
“Really? What did they teach you?” Kathleen asked as they all got into the car.
“The lady said all liars will go to he.ll. She also said good children do not steal or tell lies.” Amanda piped.
“That’s good. So you must never tell a lie.” Kathleen said with a nod as she fixed her seatbelt.
“Are you still up for your driving lessons today?” Pete asked her after they were all settled in the car, and he was driving out of the church premises.
“I’m not sure yet.” Kathleen said without looking at him.
“Okay then. Let me know if you change your mind.”
“So how was your office meeting yesterday?” Kathleen’s mother asked from the backseat.
“It was fine.” Kathleen quickly answered before Pete could say anything.
“It seemed like you people closed really late, or did you go somewhere else from there?” Her mother asked, making Pete chuckle.
“No. We… We just had a lot to talk about.” Kathleen lied, making Pete turn to look at her with a mocking smile as though to remind her of what she had just told Amanda. Kathleen cleared her throat and looked away.
“Yet you had so much alcohol to drink? I hope the other female staff were drunk too.” Her mother said with a scoff before deciding to drop the subject. Amanda as usual continued talking to Isioma until they got home.
“Let’s talk before you go in.” Pete said to Kathleen while the others got out of the car immediately he parked in front of the house.
“Thank you my son. By the way, you both looked really good together.” Kathleen’s mother told Pete with a smile as she got out of the car and walked away.
“Your mother seems to really like me.” Pete said with a grin making Kathleen roll her eyes.
“I’m sure she likes every single man that comes within talking distance of me.” Kathleen muttered.
“Like Chidi?”
“Like Chidi.” Kathleen agreed.
“How come you don’t have a problem with telling lies but you have a problem with every other thing? Telling lies isn’t less than f®rnication or murder, you know?” Pete asked as he scrolled through his phone for the recording.
He wasn’t sure he was going to have the chance to be alone with her before going on his trip tomorrow, so he had to use this opportunity to do it.
“I already prayed for forgiveness.” She said defensively. Kathleen fidgeted in her seat as she waited for him to say something. She turned to look at him when he didn’t say anything and noticed he was busy with his phone. Before she could open her mouth to say anything else her voice drifted over the car through the car speaker. She had a frown on her face as she tried to make sense of what she was hearing, and then her eyes widened in surprise when she realized Pete had recorded their conversation. She looked into his face, and scowled when she saw the way he was seriously struggling not to laugh.
“What’s that?” She asked, eyeing him.
“Ssshhh. Just listen till the end.” Pete said with a faint smile, making her purse her lips as she returned her attention to their voices in the background.
Her heart skipped a beat when she heard the part she was sure he wanted her to hear, and she turned to look at him in surprise. He was falling for her? She wondered, and then giggled when she heard the response she had given him. It seemed like she was more witty when she was drunk.
She was already feeling very embarrassed by the time they listened to the end of the recording. She cleared her throat to get past the lump which had lodged in her throat, “Why did you record that?”
“Because I like how talkative you are when you’re drunk.” Pete said with an easy smile.
“I didn’t think you were the type to like talkative ladies.” Kathleen muttered.
“I don’t like talkative ladies. I like you, and I want you to be a part of my life, Kat.” Pete said, making eye contact with her.
She hadn’t been expecting such a direct approach. She felt her mouth go dry as she raised a hand to her chest. She could feel her heart pounding very seriously in her chest at his words.
“I understand that we haven’t known each other for a long time. But I feel like I’ve known you for a long time already. Or maybe it is my heart that knows you. All I know is that I love being around you. I love listening to you talk, and I like to watch your eyes light up whenever you smile, even when you’re not smiling at me or because of me. Although, I’d rather you reserve such smiles for me… But I’m just saying I really like you a lot and I don’t want to be just a friend or an employer to you.” Pete finished in a rush. That was the only outward sign that he was nervous. And Pete was never nervous as far as Kathleen could tell. She was partially relieved to know he wasn’t as much in control as he liked to show.
“…” Kathleen cleared her throat, but couldn’t think of anything to say. What could she say? She was actually feeling very speechless. Although it was something she had expected or maybe had hoped would happen between them, but now that he was saying it she was at a loss for what to say.
“Why do you look so surprised?” He asked when she kept staring at him without saying a word.
“My head is actually blank. I don’t know what to say.” Kathleen confessed, “Can I at least give you a response later?” She asked after a little while.
“Sure. You have until I get back from my trip to make up your mind.”

Kathleen had no idea what she had been expecting after Pete’s confession the previous day, but she knew the one thing she hadn’t expected was for him to leave for his trip without informing her first. She had assumed they had crossed a certain line that weekend, but it obviously wasn’t so.
She had thought that they were both going to leave for the office as usual that morning and then he would leave from there, or perhaps she would at least see him before leaving for the office. She had been very surprised when Chidi informed her that Pete had left earlier since he needed to see his father first that morning before leaving for the airport.
Sitting in her office now, she couldn’t help contemplating whether she should just keep waiting for him to call her, or perhaps she should call him to find out if he had arrived safely. She decided against the later since she was still upset he had left without leaving a message or bothering to call her.
As she worked for most part of the morning she couldn’t help glancing at her phone occasionally in anticipation of a phone call from him. Just when she decided to give up on the idea and just let it be, her ringtone startled her and she quickly grabbed her phone, hoping it was Pete, but was partially disappointed to see it was Kimberly.
Oh! She murmured when she remembered she had been too carried away on Saturday and Sunday to think about her or even give her a call, “Hello!”

Kimberly cleared her throat awkwardly before standing up from her office seat, “Hi! It’s Kimberly. We met at the club.” Kimberly explained. She couldn’t help feeling slightly embarrassed as she spoke to Kathleen. She didn’t want to even try to imagine what must be in Kathleen’s head about her at the moment. Disappointment perhaps?
“Oh! Kimberly! I was actually hoping I would hear from you.” Kathleen said as she stood up from her desk and walked away from the curious eyes of the office gossips.
“I know I never got the chance to thank you properly for standing up for me that way. I’m sorry I waited so long to call…”
“It’s actually fine. Not a problem.” Kathleen hurried to assure her. If she was in Kimberly’s shoes she would probably have been more upset that she had brought unnecessary attention to her.
“I was hoping we could meet for lunch? I’d like to talk to you in person… That is if you’re not too busy of course.” Kimberly rushed to add.
“Lunch? My office is in the mainland.” Kathleen said before she remembered that Kimberly actually knew. Kimberly already knew she worked for Pete, and if she had had something to do with Pete, then it made sense that she would know where Pete’s office was.
“Yeah. I’m aware. I could pick you up, or order a bolt ride for you, whichever is convenient for you or makes you comfortable. We would have lunch in the mainland of course.” Kimberly could guess she was babbling like an idi.ot, but she couldn’t hide the fact that she was feeling nervous.
“No need to pick me up. Just tell me where you want me to meet you, and I’ll join you.” Kathleen told her calmly.
“Are you sure? It really won’t be a bother…”
“You should calm down.” Kathleen said, cutting her off when she sensed how anxious Kimberly was from her tone. Kimberly stopped to take in a deep breath.
“Don’t worry about me. Just text me the location and I’ll meet you.’ Kathleen assured her once again.
“Alright. Thank you very much.” Kimberly said before hanging up. She was yet to make up her mind on where to meet Kathleen, so she went on Google map to search for a cool fast-food restaurant restaurant where they could have lunch near Kathleen’s office.
“What are you up to?” Prisca asked as she barged into Kimberly’s office without knocking, and saw her standing in the middle of the office with her head bowed over her phone.
“I just gave Kathleen a call. I asked her to have lunch with me.” Kimberly said distractedly.
“Okay. That’s good. By the way, you’re still meeting with Tunde Obasan today, right?” Prisca asked as she sat down on one of the seats while looking at Kimberly.
“Yes. We’ll be meeting by 4 PM, so I want to meet with Kathleen first.” Kimberly explained.
“Is Eric going with you? I mean will Eric be with you when you meet with Tunde?” Prisca asked curiously.
“Nope. He said he doesn’t want to intefer in our meeting since it’s business related. And honestly he has done more than enough. You won’t believe he spent most of the night going through the business proposal with me.” Kimberly said as she returned to her seat.
“Give me a moment.” She said as she quickly texted the name and location of the restaurant where Kathleen was to meet her to her.
“Can I go with you?” Prisca asked after a while making Kimberly raise her head.
“To meet Kathleen?”
“No. Tunde. I’d like to meet him.”
“Kai! Golddigger!” Kimberly teased her with a giggle making Prisca let out an embarrassed laugh.
“Golddigger ke. If I meet him and he ends up liking me won’t you be happy for me?” Prisca asked, rolling her eyes.
“How do you know you’re going to like him? Besides how come you don’t think I might be interested him?” Kimberly asked making Prisca’s smile transform into a frown.
“Are you? I thought you like Eric?” She asked in confusion.
“I thought you said Eric is a list and is deceiving me?” Kimberly fired back, crossing both hands over her chest as she looked at Prisca.
“But you said you believe him na. Did I argue again after you said it?” Prisca asked defensively making Kimberly sigh.
“He actually confessed to me that he is lying to me though.” Kimberly said making Prisca sit up.
“He did? What did he say he is lying about?” She asked curiously.
“That he didn’t say. But he asked me to give him two weeks. He said he will come clean with me in two weeks.” Kimberly said with another sigh.
“What if he is married or in a rela…”
“He isn’t. He said that is not it.” Kimberly said with a shake her head.
“Hmmm… What if he is from a rich family and was probably disowned?” Prisca asked with suggestive smile.
