THE MIRACLE I NEED SEASON 2 : Episode 1 – 10

EPISODE 4

An hour before her closing time, Kathleen remembered to give Sharon a call so as to inform her that they would be going out together. She stood up from her seat and walked out of the office over to the restroom before dialing Sharon’s number.

“Lover girl! How far?” Sharon asked the moment she received the call, making Kathleen want to roll her eyes.

“Fine. How are you?” She asked calmly.

“I’m okay jare. Just here arranging my documents so I can start looking for a new job from next week,” Sharon explained making Kathleen smile. She was glad that Sharon was really putting in good effort to move on and not turn back.

“That is a good one. Well done.”

“Thank you my sister. How is everyone at home? Have you heard from Pete today?” Sharon asked curiously.

“Yes. That isn’t why I called you though. I wanted to know if you’re up for an outing this evening. Remember that my friend I told you about?”

“Who? You don’t have any friend apart from me. And that is because only me knows how to tolerate you with yo…”

Kathleen hissed into the phone, “Basket mouth! Is that what I asked you? Just open your mouth and be saying nonsense! Didn’t I tell you about that guy I met that…”

“Oh! You mean the guy that was giving you idea on how to get Pete’s attention?” Sharon asked apologetically.

“No o, do I have any friend? I mean your brother,” Kathleen said dryly making Sharon giggle.

“You like quarel pass fight o! What happened to him? Is he toasting you too?” Sharon asked making Kathleen sigh. What sort of a friend is this?

“Today is his birthday, he wants us to hang out, so I want you to come with us,” Kathleen said, ignoring Sharon’s stupid question.

“Hang out? Where? Why do you want me to come with you people? Are you sure he is not a kidnapper or a ritualist?” Sharon asked cautiously.

“If na kidnapper, how much your papa get wey he fit pay make them release you? (Let’s assume he is a kidnapper, is your father wealthy enough to pay for your release?) ” Kathleen asked

“Your bad mouth will kill you. Anyway, is he single? He is rich abi?” Sharon asked curiously.

“Abeg don’t ask me any stupid question. Are you coming with me or not? I have gist for the both of you, so if you’re coming come to my office before my closing time so we can both leave together. Unless you want to meet up with us later.” Kathleen suggested.

“Nah. It’s better if we go together. Let me go and get ready. Wait, but your friend is fine sha?” Sharon asked again.

“He is very fine. Just come, I need to get back to work,” Kathleen said before hanging up.

Just as she started leaving the restroom for her office, she recalled that Pete had asked Chidi to pick her up, so she dialed Chidi’s number.

“Nne, what’s up?” Chidi asked immediately he took the call.

“Please no need for you to come over to pick me up. I’m hanging out with Sharon after work, and we will come home together,” Kathleen explained.

“You’re sure you girls don’t need me to tag along? I could drive you both around,” Chidi suggested.

“So you can monitor me. You think I don’t know he asked you to keep an eye on me?” Kathleen asked dryly.

“Oh! He told you?” Chidi asked awkwardly.

“Don’t worry. We will be okay, so just chill. Thank you,” Kathleen said before hanging up.

Immediately Wumi walked out of the police station she dialed Eric’s number, “If dad is stable now, I think maybe you should get back here immediately. Kimberly seems really upset and might need you here with her,” Wumi said in a sad tone.

Eric’s heart skipped a beat, “Why? Did something happen? Did anybody touch her?” Eric asked as he stood up from where he had been seated. Of course he hadn’t expected anything good to come from her taking a job Amaka offered, but at the same time he had hoped no harm would come to her, hence he asked Wumi to look out for her.

“Not exactly…” Wumi said, and then went on to tell him all that had happened and how she had handled it.

“Why didn’t you call me earlier?” Eric asked with a worried frown, making his mother who was sitting beside him look at him curiously.

“Because I was BUSY handling things. I’m heading over to her house now, so I’m hanging up,” Wumi said before hanging up.

“Wait..” Eric was saying before he heard the disconnect tone, and turned to his mother who was standing beside him now with a worried frown.

“What is going on?”

“It’s Kim. Amaka tried to set her up with some guys but thankfully she didn’t drink the spiked wine and Wumi also showed up on time…”

“What? Does that Amaka girl even have a brain? Why would she do something like that to her own stepdaughter? Does she realize what something like this would even do to her husband’s political career if it gets out?” Mrs Obasan asked angrily.

“Is that what you should be concerned about right now?” Chief Obasan who had been awoken up from his sleep by Eric’s ringtone asked his wife in a chiding tone.

“Of course I’m worried about Kim. I’m just surprised by how thoughtless the Amaka girl is,” She said as she walked over to her husband’s side, “Are you hungry?” She asked since he was yet to have lunch.

“Food is not important right now. How is she doing?” Chief Obasan asked Eric who was still standing in the same position, as he thought of what to do to Amaka to end her madness once and for all.

“I don’t know. Wumi said she is very upset.”

“Then you should go and meet her. I don’t need you here, but she needs you. Go and take care of everything,” His father said, cocking his head to the door for Eric to leave.

“I’m going to tell her everything tonight.”

“You should,” His father said with a nod.

“Thanks dad. Mom, I need to leave now, will you be okay?”

“Sure. You can go. Give her my love. I hope to see her soon,” His mother said, he pecked her forehead before rushing out of the room.

“I hope she won’t be very mad when he tells her everything,” Mrs Obasan said with a sigh.

Eric had been hoping he could fly back with their private plane that afternoon, but the pilot had left for the neighboring town to visit his cousin since he had thought they were leaving the next day. That left Eric with no other choice than to go to the airport and follow a public plane.

As he stood on the queue waiting to be checked so he could get into the plane, he saw someone who looked very familiar standing ahead of him, and just then the person made eye contact with him.

“Eric?” Pete asked, sounding surprised to see Eric at the airport.

First thing Eric felt was a slight resentment towards Pete for being among those who had used Kimberly in the past, but he consciously shook off the thought from his head and flashed Pete a smile, “Hi!”

They both waited until they had been checked and were headed for the plane before engaging in a conversation, “What did you come to do in Abuja?” Eric asked first.

“I’m representing my father at an annual business conference,” Pete explained as they both got inside the plane.

“I see. I came to see my parents,” Eric explained since he knew that was probably the next thing Pete would asked him.

“That’s cool,” Pete said with a nod as he tried to find his seat, and then they realized they were sitting next to each other. They took their seats without saying a word to each other, but they both were not ignorant of the awkwardness of their situation. It was one thing to merely exchange greetings with a man that you know had slept with your wife, but it was an entirely different thing to have to sit next to him.

“Uhm, I’m sorry about the other night,” Pete said after sometime.

“Huh?” Eric asked, since he had not been expecting an apology.

“I mean, you know… About me and Kim. I figured…”

“It doesn’t matter,” Eric said dismissively. He knew he had been concerned about it a moment ago, but hearing Pete apologize just made it all seem ridiculous.

“It does matter. I’m not that irresponsible. I owe Kim an apology too, but I don’t know how to go about it,” Pete said, feeling slightly embarrassed.

“Why are you telling me this?” Eric asked, turning to look at him.

“I don’t know. Maybe it’s because I don’t want either of you to think I took advantage of her. I really didn’t know about her lifestyle… Like I never knew she had such a reputation, no offense. I’ve been away from the country for some years and then Ken told me he ran into her and she asked about me. We met, and she initiated things, and things happened between us. I only got to find out the next day,,” Pete said shamefaced.

“Like I said, it’s okay. I wasn’t married to her then, so I don’t blame you. You were only being human,” Eric said with a sigh.

“Thanks for your understanding,” Pete said, feeling relieved now, and Eric gave him a nod.

“So have you started making any plans regarding the restaurant business?” Eric asked, changing the subject.

“I’ve been thinking about it and making plans, I’m working towards purchasing a space by next week,” Pete said, glad that they had left the awkward topic.

“Maybe I could help you get one. I’ll ask my assistant to check for available spaces. See it as me thanking your girlfriend for being friends with my wife and trying to help her,” Eric said, making Pete glance at him in surprise.

“Kathleen?”

“You have another lady you are involved with?” Eric asked with a slightly raised brow.

“No. Not that. I’m just wondering why you assumed we are a couple since we told you we weren’t the other night. Or did she happen to tell your wife anything?” Pete asked hopefully.

“No. I’d be blind not to know something is going on with the both of you even after you denied it. Anyway, once I confirm with my assistant, I’ll discuss with my wife and invite you both over for dinner if you don’t mind,” Eric said, making Pete grin.

“Sure. It’s very fine as long as your wife is okay with it,” Pete said with a nod.

“You really did not have to drive down to pick us sha,” Kathleen protested as herself and Sharon got into the car.

“And allow fine ladies like you to enter bus? Don’t worry, it’s the same thing. How was work today?” Chuka asked Kathleen curiously.

“Fine jare. By the way, meet my best friend Sharon. Sharon, meet Chuka my bros,” Kathleen said, turning in her seat to look at her friend Sharon who has been unusually quiet.

“Hello! Good evening,” Sharon said with a polite smile as Chuka turned to greet her.

“Ahh! This girl can form o! See the way her voice and character has transformed because of man!” Kathleen exclaimed in disbelief making Chuka chuckle, while Sharon glared at her in embarrassment.

“So you are usually not this quiet?” Chuka asked curiously.

“Don’t mind her, she is just talking,” Sharon assured him as she turned away.

“Na wa o! Wonders shall never end! Oya na, let’s go,” Kathleen said as she returned her attention to the road.

“Yeah,” chuka said as he turned in his seat and started the car.

“Kathleen did you see the picture I sent you on WhatsApp?” Sharon asked in a calm voice.

“Which picture? When did you send it?” Kathleen asked as she turned on her data, and saw Sharon’s message.

“Shey you know say thunder go fire you?” Sharon texted Kathleen on WhatsApp.

“Hian! So this is the picture?” Kathleen asked out loud before texting back, “Why will thunder fire me? Do you want me to show him this chat?” Kathleen threatened.

“Shey you don’t want me to have a normal boyfriend like you? Allow me to act classy na, abi you want me to snatch your oga from you?” Sharon texted again.

Kathleen snorted, “You can’t do anything. Anyway, just relax and be yourself. No need to form too much,” Kathleen texted back before turning off her data.

“So Sharon, you’re from Delta State too?” Chuka asked after they were seated at the rooftop lounge.

“Yes. But I’m not from the same place as Kathleen, I’m an itsekiri girl,” Sharon explained.

“Oh! That is nice. So what do you do?” Chuka asked with interest, fixing his gaze on her. Although Sharon was on the chubby side, but she was really pretty and had a nice figure.

“I don’t have a job, so I’m job hunting at the moment,” Sharon said with an embarrassed smile.

“Really? How long have you been in Lagos?”

“About five years. I did my NYSC here in Lagos, so I stayed back after service,” Sharon explained.

“Yeah, she is the reason I moved to Lagos. She accommodated me when I first got here,” Kathleen added so she wouldn’t be left out of the discussion.

“That is nice of you. It’s not easy to accommodate peopIe. So you’ve been jobless since then? Or is it a recent development?” Chuka asked again, making Sharon shift in her seat uncomfortably as she turned to look at Kathleen, but Kathleen glanced away and picked up her phone, leaving Sharon to answer the question herself.

“It’s a recent development,” Sharon said with an awkward smile, “I lost my job some months ago,”

“Oh! That’s sad. Sorry I’m asking too many questions o. It’s just that I always feel happy whenever I see hard-working and decent ladies like you who would rather work hard and earn your own money than go into runs or mess around with other women’s husbands just as most Lagos girls do these days,” Chuka said making Sharon glance at Kathleen helplessly.

Kathleen cleared her throat, “Enough about Sharon. I didn’t tell you before now, but my boss asked me to be in a relationship with him on Sunday,” She told Chuka who simply raised a brow.

“Have you said yes?” Sharon asked her curiously.

“Not yet.”

“Not yet?” Both Chuka and Sharon asked, sounding equally confused.

“Why? I thought you liked him?” Sharon asked, looking at Kathleen with a frown. Of course she should have known that Kathleen’s things were always different. Had it been some other girl Pete had asked for a relationship, the girl wouldn’t have thought twice about it. But here was Kathleen taking all the time in the world to say yes to a man she obviously liked.

“I do, and today he told me he is in love with me,” She announced, making both Chuka and Sharon exchange a glance.

“Of course he is in love with you. Why do you sound so surprised about it?” Chuka asked, looking at Kathleen in amusement.

“Awww! He did? How did he say it? What happened? Why have you still not accepted him?” Sharon asked excitedly.

“I don’t know. Doesn’t it seem rushed?” Kathleen asked with a frown, ignoring Sharon’s question.

Sharon rolled her eyes, “You would rather he takes a year to get to know you as friends, then date you for two years before telling you he is in love with you, and then proposes five years later?” Sharon asked sarcastically.

“That’s not what I mean. I’m just saying, it’s only been a week, and…”

“And what? Your own is too much abeg! You over do your things to the point that you become annoying!” Sharon snapped at her angrily, and then picked up her glass of Chapman and took a long sip when she remembered she was supposed to be acting cool in front of Chuka.

“What about you? Don’t you feel the same way about him?” Chuka asked, looking at Kathleen curiously.

“I don’t know. Maybe I do,” Kathleen shrugged.

“So what is stopping you? You have any reservation? Something you don’t like?” Chuka asked again calmly, making Sharon feel like she had overreacted earlier.

“You’re scared of his mother?” Sharon guessed.

“No. It’s not that. She even visited me at the office to clear the air between us,” Kathleen said with a sigh.

“She did? That means you don’t have a problem with his family. So what is disturbing you?” Sharon asked, trying to sound as calm as Chuka.

“Kind of. I don’t know if it is normal, but I was feeling kind of jealous of his late wife, and I was also feeling scared that I won’t be able to be the kind of wife he wants…” Kathleen said, and went on to explain everything about how she had cried when Amanda showed her the photo album, and also about her conversation with Pete. By the time she was done, both Chuka and Sharon were just staring at her.

“You should say something,” Kathleen said, when they both remained quiet.

Chuka was the first to break the silence, “I can’t say I understand how you feel, but I think you should trust him. From all you have told me about him, he seems like a man who knows what he wants. And you need to stop overthinking things if you want to live a happy life,” Chuka suggested.

“He loves you. His daughter loves you. His family accepts you. The only problem here, is you. Yes, I suppose I understand how you would feel being in a relationship for the first time, and the man happens to be a widower… But he has made it clear that he cares about you and loves you. Trust me, the dating market out there isn’t as easy or appealing as you might be thinking. What is the point in meeting someone as inexperienced as you, and then getting your heart broken? Or what is the point in meeting someone who is single and has never been married, yet doesn’t treat you with the love and respect you deserve? You’ve been blessed with a good man, don’t throw it away because of irrelevant thoughts,” Sharon advised.

“So you both think it isn’t rushed, and I shouldn’t worry about his ex wife?” Kathleen asked, just to be sure she got what they were saying.

“I’m saying God has blessed you with a good man, don’t ruin it,” Sharon said.

“I agree with her. Besides, your mother has seen him, and if she also thinks he is good for you, you should trust her. Las las sha, just follow your heart,” Chuka concluded with a wink.

“Sha accept him is all I know. Enough about you. It’s his birthday, don’t steal his show. Why don’t we snap pictures, and then he can tell us more about himself?” Sharon suggested excitedly.
