CHAPTER 39
Maxwell came out of the next taxi, and his eyes widened when he saw what’s going on.
“Baby!” He rushed to the scene and pulled granny away from Jemima, holding her to his side.
“Allow me to teach her more!” She said.
“I didn’t tell you she was the cause of my wounds!” He retorted.
“Isn’t it obvious?” Cypress replied and started walking to Jemima again.
“Cypress!!” He shouted, and she stopped, taking off the bucket hat she’s wearing.
“Mell…
“I said no!” He shouted, and she sighed before facing Jemima.
“It’s not over, just run when you see me” she smirked and left, bouncing away on her sneakers.
“Granny, you should go back home, you need to open the he bar today” Maxwell told granny…
“But we need to…
“This wasn’t needed seriously, so please stop it already” he interrupted.
“You even came here despite your condition, don’t tell me you still care about her ” she replied.
“I only came cos I know what you both are capable of doing” he replied.
“Are you sure you’re fine?” She looked up at his face, and he smiled.
“I’ll go receive another treatment at the hospital this morning, so don’t worry and go home”
“Ok…will you meet me at the bar?” She asked.
“Sure” he smiled, and she hugged him.
“See you later” she smiled, and he broke it to peck her.
She faced Jemima. “You’ll see me in your dreams cos this is not over yet! I seriously pity the woman who’d have you as her daughter-in-law” she shook her head.
Maxwell led her to the road and got her into a taxi which took her away.
He sighed and faced Jemima who was just standing with scattered hair and rumpled blouse.
She didn’t bother to arrange her hair before rushing to him.
“Maxwell…are you…
” I only came to save you from my family when though you’re not worth it, I have to go now” he said coldly and made to turn.
“I’m sorry!! Please give me a chance to apologise properly” she quickly said, and his eyes widened.
He didn’t hear wrong, she just said it!
“What!” He said surprisingly.
“I said I’m sorry, I know I’ve never been good to you, and I don’t even deserve your hard work and devotion, but… but can you just… please let me take you for your treatment this morning?” she begged .
Maxwell looked at her again, is this really her? What changed overnight?
“I swear I’m sorry, just let me take you ok?” she held his right hand.
He didn’t say a word as she pulled him to her car and let him go.
“Please…” She opened the car door for him, and he reluctantly got in.
She got in with him, and the driver drove them away from the company.
No unnecessary talks till they got to the hospital where his wounds were retreated and redressed.
“You should come for the treatment throughout next week too, it’d accelerate the healing” the doctor told him.
“Sure” he nodded, standing from the bed.
He limped out with Jemima beside him, though she’s sourcing for ways to start a conversation, but it’s just not forthcoming.
They finally got outside, and he faced her surprisingly.
“I don’t know what happened to you in the past, but I know there should be no reason for a mother to hate her own child, didn’t you labour to give birth to her in the hospital?
Why don’t you think of the sweat you broke that day and the pains of the nine months pregnancy?
Why treating Frances so bad?” He said, and she felt her tongue twisting, nothing to say again.
“I know no amount of my meaningless words can make you change, but it’d be nice if you go to her school later today, there’s a show, and I think parents are invited, she must have shown you the invite, you should go… please” he said softly and sighed.
“Thanks for taking me, I’ll go back in a taxi” he said and started leaving…
“Will you… forgive me if I go for it?” She suddenly asked, and he stopped.
He wanted to talk, but he cancelled it and only sighed before walking away in limps.
Jemima sighed, and her phone rang.
It was Lina, and when she picked…
“Boss! The internet is on fire! A video of how you were attacked an hour ago is trending!” She shouted.
“It’s nothing” Jemima replied.
“What! Haters are making jest of you! Why did you stop the guards from taking care of the attackers?” Lina replied worriedly.
“I said I’m fine! When is my schedule getting cleared today?”
“Secretary Maxwell should know that, I’m not…
“He’s not available for now, so check the tab and feed me!” She snapped.
“I’m afraid you’d be having a long day, you won’t be free till 6” Lina replied.
Jemima checked the invite on her phone, the show is by 4.
“Yunno what? Clear all my schedule from 4 downwards” she told Lina.
“But we’d lose the contract if I do that, and it’d be dangerous for Skyline” Lina replied.
“Contract?”
“Yes, you’re meeting with the contractors from Incheon” Lina replied, and Jemima held her forehead.
“Fk”
