Chapter Seventeen

GRACE POV

The ride to Dylan’s house was quite long and according to the driver, Beaut road is kinda far, almost away from the city which left me wondering why Dylan parents would want to live on a deserted area.

I held my phone in my palm as I went through my Instagram account, I was currently watching a video of Victoria and my former classmates in my former school. It was posted by Victoria!

They were laughing in the video as well as making silly dance moves that almost made tears appear in my eyes.

Oh Geez! I so much miss my former school there in Nigeria, the one I last attended before I came to America.

It’s so lively, cheerful and full of fun especially my former classmates who wouldn’t stop amusing me with their jokes.

I sighed sadly as the video ended and just when I was about watching another video, a call came in. It was from David, his name was boldly written at the caller ID.

“Grace!”.He said immediately I answered the call.

“Gee Dave, don’t disturb me with your calls. Am not even there yet”.I voiced out, feeling annoyed.

“Hey, am only being concerned, okay?”.He said and I pouted.

“You don’t need to be concerned about me, am doing perfectly fine. Good day!”.I cut off the call before dropping my call aside.

Ah! He just ruined my mood. Why is he always being overprotective of me? Do I look like a baby to him? Am almost sixteen for Pete sake!

I scoffed loudly, placing my palms on my cheeks and just when I was about finding some peace, my phone began ringing.

In annoyance thinking it was Dave, I angrily picked up the call and placed it on my ear without caring to stare at the caller ID.

“Dave, please! Please drop this over protectiveness, it’s annoying. Am grown up now, am not a baby anymore, thanks for your concern though but I can take care of myself and I hope that for once in your life, you will understand that”.I huffed angrily but for the next three seconds, their was silence not until I heard some laughter over the phone. It wasn’t Dave’s voice, it was someone else.

I brought down the phone from my ear and checked the caller ID, to my biggest surprise it was Jeanann calling. I gave her my number yesterday at school but I didn’t expect her call anytime soon.

“Oh My Gosh! Grace! Am so surprised, like wow, this is funny! Like seriously…have never heard you speak so angrily like this. Geez! I can’t believe this..”.She laughed and I blushed feeling so embarrassed.

Oh crap!

“Cut that Jean..Why did you call?”.I giggled.

“Nothing serious. I just realized it’s 12pm so I decided to call to ask how you and Dylan are coping with the project”.She said and I shrugged.

“Am not there yet, am on my way”.

“Oh, okay then, good luck!”.

“Thanks. Good luck on your project too”.

“Yeah, gotta cut the call now. I will call you later”.

“Okay bye!”. And beep! The call ended..

Before the next minute, the car stopped at a house much bigger than that of parents, It was fenced all around and secured with Bab wires. The gate stood on its ground strongly, it was huge and black in colour and it made it impossible to see the house through the gate.

“This is block 17, Grace”.Mr Lucas said noticing my hesitation to step out of the car. I just nodded and after few seconds, I walked out of the car.

“Pick me up at 4pm”.I said as soon as I got out of the car.

“Alright. Goodbye, study hard”.He smiled and drove the car away.

Hmm..
I fondled with my fingers nervously as I walked to the gate. I knocked on it and it was opened a bit, revealing a young man probably in his early twenties with a tattooed face, pierced ears, marked cheeks and dyed hair. He looks kind of scary..

“Who the he.ll are you?”.He rasped and the moment his breath fanned my face, I coughed profusely. Dmn! His breath reeked of alcohol.

“Am…Grace, Dylan’s partner for the project given to us at school”.I said, holding tight at my chest as I felt some tightness in there.

“Oh I see”.He frowned deeply. “Show me your proof”.

“Proof?”.

“Yeah. Of course proof. What did you expect? That I would let you in without confirming that you are really Grace?”

“But Sir, am Grace. Am not…”.

“Shut the hell up!”.He eyed me angrily. “Since you have no proof, you have to leave and better don’t ever step your foot…”.

“Jasper! Leave the poor girl alone”.I heard a voice and soon, a pretty woman appeared at the gate. She seems to be in her early thirties.

“This girl is an imposter, I can fe..”.

“No Jasper, she is Grace. Can’t you see her the way Dylan described? Fair, tall, curly hair, pink lips and a beautifully shaped oval face?”.

“I didn’t look into that.. Get inside!”.He said coldly and opened the gate widely for me to enter. I smiled and went in but when I passed his side, he took his mouth to my ear.

“Bch!”.He whispered and I frowned but my frown disappeared when I saw the compound.

It was tiled, you can even see your reflection on it. Beautiful sweet scented flowers surrounded the house and a tall beautiful flower tree was beside it. A swimming pool could be seen at the backyard and I would like to say over and over again that this house was more beautiful than mine.

I and the woman got into the house and she showed me to the study room where Dylan and I were going to carry out the project.

“Wait here dear, Dylan went out. He will be here any moment”.She smiled at me and went out.

I sighed nervously as I sat on a seat before dropping the bucket I came here with on the floor.

I waited and waited for Dylan for more than two hours but he didn’t come, so in order for my coming here not to be in vain, I began doing the experiment on Osmosis while following the teacher’s instructions.

When I was halfway pouring a sugar solution into one of the thistle funnels with distilled water, the door flew open and there was Dylan staring at me coldly as usual and then before I knew it, I felt my heart beating in my stomach.
