IMASUEN’S PLIGHT : CHAPTER 1 – THE END
Chapter 4
It’s been a month since we got back to Abuja and we’ve been seriously preparing for our wedding. My mother has been excitedly picking aso-ebi clothes and inviting all her Edo meeting women telling them that her daughter would soon get married to a wealthy young man whose heart was sold to God.
Again, I wasn’t even sure if his heart was sold to God or maybe I was only confused because Busayo also asked me the same question a few weeks before my wedding.
By then, my wedding dress had already been shipped from turkey, Ebube had to travel to Dubai to get our wedding rings and also arrange for our honeymoon. It was on one of those days that Ebube traveled that Busayo came to our house unannounced.
I was scared and angry that my sister had come to call me from the room we all shared that someone important was asking after me.
But I wasn’t angry at her but at my heart because of the way it responded when I set my eyes on Busayo.
He looked ruggedly handsome and somewhat transformed too. I wanted to even ask if he had gotten a contract or a real job maybe that was what made him look broader and muscular and even more handsome.
“I heard you quit your job.” He folded his arms and I had to look away from him because my heart exploded and a familiar warmth spread across my back and to my downside.
“Why are you here Busayo?” we were currently beneath the only tree in our compound.
“Does he love God?” his gaze was intense but I avoided looking at his eyes for fear that he might catch my lie and point it out.
“Of course he loves God and his heart is sold out to God.”
“Are you sure he loves God or he simply just talks about God? Those are two different things babe.” He replied calmly.
Warmth spread across my face when he called me ‘babe’. “Don’t call me that name you hear? And please leave. I’m getting married soon and you should get over me.”
“I can’t seem to get over you Imasuen if that was easy for you. It isn’t.” he sighed. “Did you ever love me?” he took few steps towards me and I felt smaller and uneasy again especially when he took my hand in his.
He placed my hand on his heart and somehow, I could hear his heartbeat. I didn’t withdraw my hand.
I simply allowed myself to brood over what I was missing. “You still love me and I can see that in your eyes.
Leave this marriage and I promise to get married to you in no time Imasuen, trust me.”
“Love is not enough in marriage Busayo. This can’t work. Not now, not in our dreams. Please try to forget about me.” It was then I heard Ebube’s voice. With a shock, I withdrew my hand.
I turned and saw him Ebube standing right behind me in flesh and blood. I couldn’t place it if he was angry or not but I hurried Busayo out of the house while I walked back to Ebube.
Then he glanced at me, then at the place Busayo once stood and then he said,
“I don’t want to see you with him again. Not now, not ever!” he said.
I nodded but I wasn’t too sure.
