PAST MISTAKES: Episode 11 – 20

Past Mistakes

Chapter Eleven

I got extremely hungry after exerting too much energy fighting and getting angry with Ares. He didn’t change at all. He was still the same. Arrogant, manipulative, selfish and a certified bastard. Ugh!

I was on my way to the kitchen when I bumped at someone.

“Genevieve?” I was uncertain if she was really Genevieve. Although she was wearing a black and white maid’s uniform, she was bigger with shorter hair.

“Rachel!” Her eyes widened with delight.

I hugged her, securing the plate of fruits she was holding. I was so happy to see her again after seven years. She was my closest friend in the mansion.

“I’m surprise that you’re still here.”

“Me too!” She laughed. “Remember that bodyguard that Mr. Niarchos hired?”

My eyebrows furrowed, trying to recall someone.

“We used to call him Tabasco, because he was super hot!”

“Oh.. yeah…” I remembered a blond guy with big muscles like a professional wrestler and wearing dark shades all the time.

“I married him!”

“Oh!” I was shocked. “Really?”

“Kyle and I got married five years ago. We have two kids now.”

“Wow. That’s so… fast.”

“When the old Niarchos left, Kyle stayed here and worked for your husband. Eventually he was promoted as the head of security team.”

“That’s great, so you’re working together here.”

“Yeah.”

She guided me towards the breakfast nook. My stomach gurgled when I smelled the coffee and saw the sausages, bacon, croissant and plain chocolate cupcakes on the table. I settled on a chair and grabbed a cupcake.

“Glad you’re back.” She poured me a cup of coffee.

“No. I’m not staying, Genevieve.”

“What do you mean?”

“I only came here to ask Ares to sign the divorce paper.”

“What?” Her happy expression was gone and replaced with an odd look.

“I even need your help. He wouldn’t sign the divorce and took my phone. He’s kidnapping me… trapping me in here… He won’t let me go home. You’ve got to help me get out of here, Genevieve.” I almost pleaded.

“What are you saying? Rachel, he’s your husband.”

“Yeah and he’s a psychotic monster!”

Genevieve laughed and shook her head. “No. Your husband is a good man.”

“He is not!”

“I don’t know why you left him the day after your wedding. But I pity him. He suffered enough already.”

“Pity? How can you pity a man who has everything? He’s a billionaire for heaven’s sake.”

“Yeah. But money can’t buy happiness.” Genevieve looked at the door, checking if there was anyone there. She lowered her voice, almost a whisper. “He’s very lonely. He has nobody anymore.”

I frowned and continued listening to her.

“His parents abandoned him, especially his mother. I heard she hasn’t forgiven him for what he did.”

“Must be something serious?”

“Yeah.Did you know what happened to him?”

“Huh?” I shook my head. I was confused.

“A lot of things happened when you left. His grandfather was so upset. He accused him of scaring you away. They had big fights, especially in the few days. The old Niarchos stopped talking to him and left the mansion. Until now, he hasn’t forgiven Sir Ares.”

I felt bad hearing what Genevieve said. I thought I was hurting Ares only. I didn’t realize that I was hurting Mr. Niarchos at the same time. It must be very stressful and upsetting to him. Really bad for his age.

“Even when Sir Ares almost died in a car accident, Mr. Niarchos still didn’t talk to him.”

“Accident?” My heart lurched. An ill feeling started building inside of me.

“You don’t know?”

“No…”

“Oh my…”

“Tell me, please.”

Genevieve heaved a sigh. “When he found out about a month after you left that you were in Dallas, he went there to get you. He was supposed to bring Kyle with him, thanks God, he changed his mind and said that he would go alone.”

“Really?” I couldn’t believe that he found me. So he had known all along that I was in Dallas.

“A big truck hit his car. It was a miracle that he survived. If you’ve seen the car… it was wrecked so badly…. no one would think he’d survived. He stayed in the hospital for three months and been in and out of the hospital for years. He suffered third degree burns and broken bones.”

My heart sank. I clamped my mouth so tightly. I tried not to cry, to be numb and not to feel anything towards Ares. I hated him but I didn’t want him to die… I couldn’t help feeling miserable, pain, pity and sympathy towards him. I blamed myself for what he went through. It was my fault that he suffered… if I haven’t left that day….

“His grandpa never visited him in the hospital, even his mother. Well… that’s what Kyle said… they are so heartless. They couldn’t forgive him for his sins in the past.” Genevieve suddenly stopped talking. “Ooopsss… I think I heard him coming… I have to go.”

“Wait…”

“We’ll just talk again later.” She replied and left in a hurry.
