Past Mistakes
Chapter Fourteen
I woke up feeling so disoriented. Where am I?
I sat down and observed my surroundings. Oh, I was in Greece.
I remembered falling asleep in Ares arms – in the bath tub. He carried me to the bed. I was so tired after the ten hour travel.
I turned to the bedside table to check the time and saw my cellphone.
My phone!
I immediately took it and opened the contacts. But it suddenly went off.
I rushed to where my luggage where and took my phone battery charger. Thanks God… the phone was charging.
I didn’t waste any time, I called Drew.
“Drew!”
“Rachel? Is that you?”
“Yes. Thanks God, I’m able to call you now.”
“Where have you been? I kept on calling you. Why are you not answering your phone?”
“It’s a long story Drew.”
“Did he sign the divorce paper?”
“Um.. no. Not yet.”
“What took him so long? Did you see him?”
“Yes.”
“So what’s the problem? You should tell him to sign the papers or else you’ll sue him.”
“Sue him? On what grounds?”
“Hmm… we’ll think of something. We can even get more money from him.”
“Money? I don’t need his money.”
“Rachel, we’re going to need it for our future – think of our children someday.”
“That’s not a good idea.”
“Okay, we’ll talk about it when you’ll get home. I know you’re not comfortable talking about money. But it makes the world go round. Soon, you will realize that. Anyway, are you still staying in the same hotel?”
I wanted to tell him the truth that I was in Athens with Ares, but decided not to, so our conversation wouldn’t take long.
“Um… Yeah.”
“Okay, that’s good. Have him sign the divorce paper as soon as possible.”
“Of course, I’m working on it.”
“I have to go. I have a client waiting. Take your time and enjoy your vacation. Love you.”
“Sure. Bye. Love you.”
I put down my phone and looked at the engagement ring that Drew gave me. Ares was right. It was foggy.
***
It was seven in the evening when I went down the stairs. I took a quick shower, did my 5-minute makeup and wore a red bodycon dress for dinner. I put on my black stiletto shoes again. Oh… my feet already hurt. I wished I haven’t forgot my other shoes.
The moment I entered the living room, Ares was in the mini bar. He changed his clothes from rugged to casual – dark gray pants, white shirt and dark jacket. Looking sinfully gorgeous as always. He was sitting on a bar stool. Beside her was Tiffany, drinking a glass of wine.
They were sitting, so close together. Tiffany’s hand even rested on Ares’ arm, caressing it. Anyone who saw them would think that they were lovers.
Ares immediately stood up and left Tiffany’s side when he saw me. Tiffany just looked at me, sizing me from head to toe, then gave me a very sweet smile.
Are they cousins? They look like lovers to me!
“Rachel.” Ares said. “I was just about to go and wake you up.”
Oh really! Until you got distracted.
“It’s okay. I’m here. Did I miss anything?” I looked at both of them, a plastered smile on my face.
“Not much. I was with grandpa this afternoon. Too bad, he’s asleep now. You can see him tomorrow morning.” Ares came closer to me.
“Sure. That would be nice.”
“Do you want a drink first? Or are you hungry already?” Touche. Acting like a concern husband.
“I’m hungry.” I answered.
“Good. Anyway, Tiffany is joining us for dinner.”
I was not surprised.
“That’s great.”
“I’ll check if the food is ready.” Ares said and left, leaving me with Tiffany.
“Did you sleep well?” Tiffany asked.
“Yeah… but my brain still foggy.”
“Jet lag.” She smiled. “Don’t worry, you’ll sleep well tonight. Ares has a comfortable bed.”
What does she mean by that? Did she sleep in Ares bed? Together?
I just nodded. I didn’t know what to say to her. I was confused.
“You’ll feel much better tomorrow. If not, you should take Tylenol.”
“Thanks.” I answered. “So… you and Ares are cousins?” I finally found the guts to ask her.
“No!” She laughed.
“Oh… I just thought…”
“Our families are close friends. Since we were kids, Ares and I hang out together.”
So they’re best friends? I was not really convinced that they’re just friends. I felt like there was something going on between them.
Ares appeared and said that the food was ready.
During dinner, Ares and Tiffany were talking about Mr. Niarchos condition. Then shifted to their commons friends. I just listened to them and continued eating.
I observed the way Tiffany talked. Her husky voice. Her lips. Her eyes. Her hands. Her body movements. She was flirting with Ares.
Ares was stupid if he haven’t noticed that.
“Are you done?” Ares asked when I put my fork and knife down.
“Yeah. I’m full already.”
“You ate too little. I thought you’re hungry.” He said. Acting like a concern husband again.
“I lost my appetite.”
Ares heaved a long sigh. “Okay. You can have a snack later. You want some cupcake?”
“No. I just want to sleep early. I’m still tired.”
When they were done eating, I asked them if I could leave. I couldn’t stand being with them anymore. Tiffany was openly flirting with him and it made me cringed. I hated it also that Ares ignored it like it was just normal.
I think they are lovers. Yes. They are lovers! Oh God, I’m getting paranoid.
I stood up and excused myself. I was stomping my feet on the stairs, making my feet hurt more.
I hate Ares. I always hate him. I remembered him having sex with a girl in his bedroom… Girls were always around him. With his money, he obviously have countless mistresses. Tiffany was one of them.
I was so upset. I was mad at Ares. I was mad at Tiffany. And I was so mad at myself for feeling this way. I should not get affected by them.
I opened the bedroom door and sat on the bed.
I remembered what Tiffany said. ‘Ares has a comfortable bed.’
I jumped out of the bed, like I was burned. I was sure Tiffany already slept on this bed with Ares… having s*x… ugh!
I took my phone on the bedside table. I pressed Drew’s number. I should be thinking of Drew. I loved him and we were getting married.
“Rachel.”
“Hi Drew. Are you busy?”
“Yeah. I only have a fifteen minutes break and I’m grabbing some lunch now.” Drew said.
The bedroom door immediately opened and Ares came inside. He followed me and left Tiffany?
“Wish I was there. I could have prepared your lunch. You know how I miss doing that, taking care of you.” I said so sweetly. Then I saw Ares at the corner of my eye, exhaling heavily. His hands were on his pockets.
“Thank you dear but just take your time. You need a vacation too.”
“Aww, you’re so sweet. I love you so much Drew.”
“I love you too, Rachel. Sorry I have to go.”
“Okay… I miss you so so much honey… I’m always thinking of you… love you, bye.”
“I thought you’re sleepy.” Ares snapped at me the moment I put down the phone.
“I am. I’m tired.” I faced him squarely.
“You’re not.” His eyes were flashing at me angrily. His teeth gritted. “You were in a hurry to leave so you can call your boyfriend.”
“Of course! He’s not just my boyfriend. He’s my fiance. He has the right to know everything that I do with my life.”
He moved closer to me and cupped my chin up. “And I am your husband. You should NOT forget that.”
