Chapter 23
“You gave birth to twins?”
I looked down at my white off-the-shoulder top that was stained at the front and my neck where I could feel the juice she spat on my face rolling down my neck.
“Sorry, I wasn’t expecting that.”
She said when I turned to look at her, I forced a smile trying to suppress the scowl making its way to my face.
She reached for the paper towels at the end of the table and picked five.
“You had me for a second, that was a joke right?”
I collected it from her and wiped my face and neck.
“No, I had twins, Vina, for real.”
Her lips parted slowly like she wasn’t sure of what to say.
“I need to wash this off, I will be right back.”
I stood up and left for the restroom leaving her to process what I told her.
When I returned to the booth, she was twirling the straw in her drink.
“Wait, is she dead?”
She asked in a low tone leaning closer to the table.
“No?”
I said loud enough for the whole Diner to hear.
“Thank God.”
She exhaled in relief and relaxed in her seat.
“Then, you put her up for adoption?”
She asked before dipping her straw in her mouth.
“Yes.”
I replied calmly this time. Vina gasped in surprise.
“Where?”
“Cuba.”
“That makes sense since you gave birth in Cuba, but why did you abandon her?”
“I didn’t abandon her.”
“You abandoned her, you literally chose Kayden and gave her up.”
She said like I made the decision in a heartbeat.
“I was helpless, I couldn’t even afford diapers. I had to give Kayla a better life.”
I tried to explain.
“I couldn’t take care of them with my situation, at first I wanted to give both of them up for adoption.
I love them so much and I wanted to keep them but I had nothing, I knew I couldn’t give both of them a better life.
I wasn’t ready to be a mother of two kids, I had to choose. I wished I didn’t have to, but I could only take care of one.”
“Wow, that’s so unfair. Kayla will be so mad at you.”
She said and took a draw from her drink.
“Yeah, I know. I guess her new family must have given her another name.”
I mumbled with tears glistening in my eyess.
“Well, at least you didn’t abandon her in front of an orphanage in a basket.”
“Basket?”
“What? That’s where they always put them in movies, it’s either a basket or a bowl.”
I shook my head at her attempt to lighten the mood.
“I don’t blame you for anything, Chlo. You were in a tough spot and you thought you were making the right decision for your babies.”
She said with a soft smile.
“Tell me everything that happened in Cuba.”
“Okay, ” I said with a sad smile. I sat up while she leaned closer.
“When I arrived, I crashed two days in a hotel but then I realized I needed the money I was spending on room service. I asked a middle-class family if I could rent a room in their house and they agreed.
I helped with little chores and they also took good care of me. I saved some money from the cheque Adrian gave me before I left his place, so I could take care of the kids and my hospital expenses.”
“Did you know you were going to have twins?”
“Yes, I freaked out when I saw the scan. I knew right then I couldn’t do it.”
I paused and whimpered. I recalled the Doctor smiling at me while I stared at the scan with different emotions flowing through me.
I wiped my tears away with my thumb and continued. Vina was trying to blink the tears in her eyes away.
“So, my water broke while I was bathing.”
“What?”
“And only Mr. Rodriguez was home, he had to call his neighbour’s wife for help. She wore me a big sweater and they drove me to the nearest hospital.”
I paused and took a deep breath.
“When I woke up, Mrs. Rodriguez walked in with Kayden and her husband walked in with Kayla in his arms.
I cried as I took both of them in each arm, they looked so cute and peaceful. Kayla’s tiny lips pushed out in a pout as she slept, Kayden kept moving his tiny hand as he slept.”
The tears stung my eyes as I spoke with a sad smile.
“They didn’t deserve to suffer, Vina. I brought them into this world and I had no idea what to do as I stared at them.”
I allowed the tears to roll down my cheeks.
“They were so tiny and delicate and I tried to imagine myself being a mother and a parent but I wasn’t ready. I pecked their little heads and Mrs. Rodriguez took a picture.
I look at that picture every day and I hate myself for making that decision, I don’t even know if she’s happy or if she is still alive and…”
I broke down burying my face in my palms.
“Hey, ” Vina called softly holding my hand.
“Kayla is fine, maybe you can get her back.”
“I can’t, once you have given a child up for adoption, you can’t go back and take the baby. It’s the law.”
I told her.
“It took me a month to make up my mind.”
I sniffled and wiped my tears away.
“Chloe, don’t put the whole blame on yourself.”
She told me, taking my hand.
“I have to tell Tristan, he’s going to hate me.”
“Of course you have to tell him and why do you care if he hates you, the last time I checked this was all his fault.”
She said and smiled at me.
“I wish I was there for you, Chlo.”
“You already did enough, Vina.”
“But why didn’t you reach out to anyone?”
I was quiet for some seconds.
“I was scared, I believed everyone close to me will hurt me and no one really cared.”
She stood up and came to sit beside me.
“I will never hurt you, Chlo, maybe not emotionally but physically, yeah.”
I laughed softly as she hugged me.
“Does she look like you?”
She asked.
“Be the judge of that, ” I brought out my phone and went through the pictures I took in Cuba.
“Wow, that’s some Daddy’s girl.”
She said collecting my phone to look at it closely.
“I must admit you are rocking the baby bump. Do women look sexy during pregnancy?”
She asked sliding through the other pictures, I shrugged.
“She is so adorable, ” she cried.
“Look, I regret every decision I made in my life, I didn’t want her to suffer in any way.”
I told her when she returned my phone.
“It’s okay.”

The ride back to the Sanchester Mansion was filled with non-stop pep talk from Vina on how to tell Tristan about Kayla.
“You can do it!” Vina yelled after me as I walked to the house.
The maid that opened the door stared at the stain on my top before looking at my face.
I ran up the stairs to Tristan’s room, I still had to tell the whole family about Grey or maybe they already saw it on the news.
I opened the door without knocking, Tristan was typing on his phone with one hand while the other was around Kayden who was sleeping on top of him.
“Where the he.ll have you been and why did you switch off your phone?”
I paused at the doorway feeling the anger radiating from him.
“I’m coming from the police station, Detective Emily called.”
I said with a sighed and walked into the room closing the door behind me.
“You should have told me or someone.”
He sounded relieved as he dropped his phone.
“I’m 23, not 5.”
I leaned down and placed a kiss on Kayden’s head.
“What’s that on your top?”
“Lemonade, Vina spat her drink on me.”
He furrowed his eyebrows and waited for an explanation.
I waited for him to ask about what happened at the police station but he didn’t.
