?Brown skin girl?
?Chapter eight?
Ryan, Jack and Kyle sat at a table during lunch, aware of all the eyes of admiration. They were celebrities and were already used to it.
“Ryan… So, something got to our ears this morning.” Jack started rolling his fork between his fingers.
“What?” Ryan asked
“You got into trouble yesterday and you served detention? What about that?” Kyle asked
Ryan rolled his eyes
“Its nothing guys…”
“And its not just you… You and the brown skin girl” Kyle interrupted raising a brow and sounding teasingly.
Ryan looked at him
“Yeah, so what? She was the cause of the problem!” He said
“It’s so unlike Principal Hanns to let opposite sexes to serve detention in the same room. So there are some…rumors” Jack informed, studying Ryan closely. Ryan’s ears perked up
“Rumors? What rumors?” Trisha asked in curiosity, searching Ruby’s face
“Well… Chloe, tell her what we heard.” Ruby transfered
“They are saying that…” Chloe started
“They are saying that something happened between you and him!” Ruby interrupted. Chloe was used to the attitude so she only rolled her eyes.
Ryan choked on his drink and started coughing loudly
“What? Me? And her? Seriously? What is it with these people? They really don’t know who to merge me with but her? She not my type for crying out loud!” He remarked in disgust
Kyle and Jack exchanged glances
“Don’t sound that way, dude… She’s pretty.” Jack admitted
“…and she’s a hot cake” Kyle added
“…And he’s the fool that ruined my first day of school!” Trisha reminded rolling her eyes. “Where the fk did they even get such rumor!” She yelled in frustration
“So you mean… Nothing happened in the office?” Chloe asked interrogatingly
“Asides arguments and glarings and annoying comments, I can’t remember anything else.” Trisha answered carelessly.
“I wish I was in your shoes at that point, Trisha, I would have made him love me!” Ruby said dreamily.
Trisha scoffed. “Ruby! The ball on your head was from him!” She reminded
“Trisha, don’t blame her… Ryan is the guy in every girls’ dream”
“Well, the girl in my dream certainly is not brown skinned”. Ryan snapped. “And by the way, she insulted us.” He added
“How?” Kyle asked
“He laughed in my face when I said I was a better dancer than him, Kyle and Jack.” Trisha replied
“You said that? Brave move!” Ruby praised
“He laughed in your face? We’ll just wait till there is an opportunity to show him some dance moves.” Chloe said shaking her body
“Well, she said she was going to come for the audition on Friday.” Ryan shrugged
“Laughing mode will be activated” Jack stated and the boys laughed
“So, you want to join the dance gang?” Ruby asked
“Err… Yeah, just to… You know, the reputation stuff you girls talked about.” Trisha replied nervously
“Ok” Ruby answered, sounding a little disappointed
“Don’t worry… They won’t mess with me. Don’t you trust me? I’ll even drag you two into the gang.” Trisha assured
“We’ll rehearse again today after school, right?” Chloe asked
“Yeah… Sure” Trisha answered.
“Why are they coming here?” Ruby announced and they turned their head to see Ciona and two other girls coming their way like they wanted to fight a war.
The girls glared as they came.
Ciona stood in front of their table with her two friends Taylor and Bianca beside her.
“Hi!” Trisha snorted
“Don’t hi us. What happened yesterday?” Ciona asked with her hands crossed
“What happened to what?” Chloe asked
“Shut up! I’m talking to her!” Ciona snapped pointing at Trisha
“Shut me up again and I’ll give you a reason to shut up!” Chloe threatened.
Ciona ignored her and faced Trisha
“What happened when?” Trisha asked ignorantly
“I don’t know. I heard some rumors and I want to know if they are true-mors!” She said.
Trisha took a chip and broke it into a smaller piece, with her eye on Ciona. She threw the chip in her mouth and chewed on it, slowly
“What rumors?” She asked at last
“What happened between you and Ryan?” She asked impatiently
“Why don’t you ask the people you heard it from?” Ruby said
“Well, we wanna ask her!” Taylor answered
Trisha took another chip and offered it to Ciona. “You care? They are tasty!” She said
Ciona groaned “So they are true?” She yelled
“What did he see in her anyway” Bianca stated eying Trisha
“I owe you motherfkers no dmn explanation!” Trisha remarked in disdain
“Ryan has an eye for pretty girls like we in the cheerleaders!” Taylor said
“Who even cares?” Chloe asked
“Ryan is attracted to girls that can dance and have a hang of their body!” Ciona said showcasing some dance moves
“Ha! Trisha is a better dancer than you’ll ever be!” Ruby blurted out.
The cheerleaders exchanged glances and bursted into laughter. Trisha only rolled her eyes.
Ciona bent to eye level with Trisha.
“You have an opportunity to prove that right.!” She said.
Trisha looked at her and she winked
“Come on, girls!” Ciona called “You got yourself a dance battle” She yelled
Taylor played a music on the music box she was holding and screamed
“DANCE BATTLE!”
The attention of everybody in the hall turned to their direction.
Kyle rolled his eyes when he saw Ciona climb on an empty table getting ready to start dancing
“Ciona always declares dance battles with people she knows she can beat. What’s the use!”
Trisha sat, wide eyed. She turned to Ruby.
“What the f… I’m not dancing in this hall!” She said in gritted teeth
“Yes, you are! Show her that she isn’t the queen after all” Chloe remarked readying herself for a show.
The noise in the hall seemed to increase as Ciona started dancing, not taking her glaring eyes off Trisha.
The students were cheering her, some were clipping the video
“This is not happening!” Trisha answered, refusing to stand.
“Come on, Trisha, its no big deal! Definitely not, for a pop queen like you!” Ruby said assuringly
“Can you guys see that the whole school is watching?” Trisha reminded
“Yup! And they are definitely eating Ciona up” Chloe said sarcastically.
Trisha groaned and turned to watch Ciona.
She knew dance moves and where to place her steps but… There was no damn vibe. It looked like she was forcing her body to work. Trisha looked at the crowd as they cheered… What was it with this people? She wasn’t even that good a dancer and they cheered her like she was a god.
Well, they’ll see what a god dances like.
It seemed like her long gone courage bubbled up and pushed her up her feet in enthusiasm. She climbed up the table and Ciona climbed down.
The cheers and applause increased. Ciona crossed her hands as stood to watch.
“Em… Ryan, you might want to watch this.” Jack told Ryan that had been uninterestedly busy with his phone
He looked up and saw Trisha on the table a little distance away. He dropped his phone and chuckled
“Things just got interesting!” He comments and relaxed to watch the show!”
Trisha saw all the eyes on her and realised that she just took the challenge. He knees felt limb and nervousness enveloped her.
The music stopped and murmurings began
‘We’re waiting!’
‘Dance already!’
‘What are you waiting for?’
And son other stuff was heard from the people
Ruby brought out the music box in her bag and began to play the music Trisha danced that day on the court.
Trisha looked back at them and Chloe mouthed an ‘You can do it!’ And Ruby gave her a thumbs up.
She nodded and turned back.
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
She took a step and started dancing to the beat of the music with her eyes closed.
Applauds rose gradually and soon the whole hall was cheering.
She danced the nervousness out of her veins and she was bold enough to open her eyes.
The first sight she caught was Ryan staring at her in awe and it boosted her morale. She began to look at every face and then her eyes settled on Ciona. Who stared back at her jealously.
Trisha gave her a subtle smile and returned the wink.
Ciona looked around and saw that everybody was praising Trisha. That was so not supposed to happen.
She jumped don’t the table causing Trisha to jump off.
She too started to dance. The same moves, the same way.
Expecting the normal cheers she would get as usual, some boos came along.
After a while, Trisha came back onboard with pride bubbling in her stomach.
Ciona huffed and crossed her arms in envy
“Let’s get outta here.” Taylor suggested to Ciona’s ear.
Ruby and Chloe started up a chorus of “Go Trisha, Go Trisha, Go Trisha…”
Soon the students joined in the chorus with some clapping their hands.
Ciona’s head was about to burst in envy. She rushed towards the table and turned it over, sending Trisha to the ground with a yelp.
There was a loud gasp and then an uproar of laughter took over the hall.
Ciona and her friends went back to their table and so did the rest of the students.
Ruby and Chloe helped Trisha up. Trisha loosened herself from their grip and ran out of the hall in shame.
The students were still having the talk on their mouths.
Chloe felt angered. She took her bowl of cereal and pours some milk into it.
“Haha… Let’s add some crisps” Ruby said sacrificing her crisps once she noticed what Chloe was up to.
When they were done with the mix, Chloe took up the bowl and the two girls stomped towards Ciona’s table, where she was still making fun of the scene.
Chloe poured the liquid on Ciona’s head and left the bowl on her head like a cap.
Eyes were on them as Ciona gasped in shock. The cheerleaders watched in surprise and some had to stop themselves from laughing
“That’s what you get when you embarrass my friend!” Chloe stated simply and they left the hall in search of Trisha.
“Now that’s what you call having someone’s back!” Jack commented as the boys watched Ciona leave the scene the same way Trisha left.
“So… Trisha wasn’t insulting us after all. She’s a real good dancer” Kyle said
“Yeah, I’m crushing already” Jack admitted
Ryan rolled his eyes. He saw her dance and it was no doubt that she bested them all. He wasn’t about to admit them out loud though. The way she danced made him stare like he never had. It was a bit intimidating to see someone best him in what he knew best…especially a girl! He shrugged. She was eligible for the gang. At least they could use a girl among them… Even if it was Trisha! He frowned. Why did she have to be such a good dancer!
“Ryan!” Jack snapped a finger in his face and he blinked into reality
“What?” He asked
“What’s on your mind, dude?” Kyle asked
“Nothing! Nothing…” He answered. “Would you guys be ok with Trisha in the gang?” He asked
“Ok? Is that supposed to be a question? Of course!” Jack remarked
“She’s even too good to be a member in the gang. She ought to be the leader of the gang” Kyle said casually. Ryan turned to glare at him.
“No… Ok…! You are the man, Ryan!” Kyle corrected
“But you do know she’s a better dancer!” Jack pointed out.
Ryan groaned. “Well, you don’t have to say it out loud!” He complained and they laughed.
“Look! Don’t you all understand? Its not just about protecting the family, if we don’t figure out where the problem is from, we’ll keep wasting our time instead of fishing out the villains and finding out why they’re after their lives!” Mr Green yelled in frustration.
“We are trying our best, Mr Green!” Agent T tried to say
“Well, try harder! We don’t do child’s shit in this organization, we hit the nail on the head!” Agent Anna snapped
“Well, you sit with your pretty ass on a seat and give orders, how will you know the implications of hitting the nail on the head?” Becky stated glaring at Agent Anna
“Ladies! Do we have to go through your exchange of words every time we meet?” Mr Green came in before Anna had the chance to speak.
“Mr Green,.. Something happened on Tuesday. The Prime minister’s kid was almost poisoned… By the school’s janitor.” Becky reported and they all developed interest
“So… Who is the janitor working for?” Agent Kent asked
“I’m yet to find out… And I think its another secret organization that wants them killed.” Becky said
“What makes you think so?” Mr Green asked in interest
“I saw a tattoo on his wrist that day, the same kind I saw on that agent that died in an air craft last year.” She replied and took out her laptop. She had screenshoted it when she saw it through Trisha’s speck. She did some swipes on her phone and the picture appeared on the screen of the laptop.
They all turned to stare as she zoomed in
“I’ve been trying to figure out which organization owns this logo.” She announced.
They all studied it for a while, some doing some research on their laptops and and others just staring and nodding their heads.
“Agent Becky.” Mr Green called
“Yes sir!” She answered closing the laptop
“This is a clue and a lead. I suggest we all keep our eyes open… Any body with the tattoo is a huge suspect.” Mr Green announced and the agents nodded
“Can you like kidnap the janitor so we could interrogate him?” Agent Anna asked
“If you’re suggesting my daughter does that Job, it ain’t working! Its too dangerous for her. If the guy uses being a janitor as a cover, then he’s not as less dangerous as he looks” Becky reasoned.
“Ok, agent Becky. You’ve been a dedicated agent. Stay under cover, don’t blow it.” Mr Green praised and she nodded slightly.
He turned and nodded at Agent Anna
“This meeting is adjourned till further notice!” Agent Anna announced and they all stood, dispersing, soon leaving the hall in empty.
Becky rushed to her car, she’ll have to rush to pick up Trisha from school.
Its been almost two weeks since Damian left Trisha with her. They had not still gotten along all well but Becky grew fond of Trisha. She was the typical example of the kind of daughter she wanted to have… Adventurous, daring, talented and helpful.
She was not about to admit out loud to Trisha that she appreciated her as a step daughter to be. She was still the mean grumpy Becky to her but she didnt mind.
Although Trisha was a great help to her, she wasn’t going to put her into things she couldn’t handle… Like spying on the janitor.
“I think I should spy on him! He’s so suspicious!” Trisha said in enthusiasm on the ride back home.
Becky rolled her eyes. “No!”
“Why not? Who knows what his next plan is.” Trisha said
“Its not your job to find out!” Becky replied. Trisha eyed her
“Well, I’m your eye! If I don’t find out, who will?” She complained
“The answer’s no! Stay away from the janitor! Stay as far away as possible, he may be dangerous.”
Trisha scoffed. “Yeah, right! He’s a janitor! How dangerous could he be?”
“I’m a dmn baker and you have seen how dmn dangerous I am.” Becky said.
“Ha! You think you’re dangerous? You nowhere near dangerous to me!” Trisha commented looking out the window.
“I’ve not yet decided whether or not to hurt you, thats why.” Becky stated plainly.
“Whatever!” Trisha finalized
There was a short pause and Becky broke the silence.
“So… How close have you come to the boy?” She asked
“Well, I just made the Dance gang… That’s close enough.” She answered
“Dance gang?” Becky repeated
“Yes. Ryan dances and is only friends with dancers… That was the only option to be his ‘friend’.” Trisha said, stressing the friend in disgust.
“Oh.” Becky said. “You dance?”
“Who else will dance if I don’t” Trisha boasted funnily and Becky laughed heartily, causing Trisha to look at her in surprise.
The fact that She could detect some emotions in her laughter made her surprise. She shrugged the thought aside.
Becky cleared her throat
“So, how close have that brought you to him?” She asked back to her cold tone.
Trisha sighed in disappointment
“Well, the people in the gang become his closest friends.” Trisha answered simply
“Oh… Ok” Becky replied.
There was another length of silence.
“You think I can’t do it?” Trisha broke it, looking out the window
Becky stole a glance at her
“Do what?”
“You don’t trust me to do this work well… To protect Ryan and find the root of the janitor stuff.” She said in disappointment
Becky sighed as she parked outside the house
“Its not like I don’t trust you” she said
“Of course you don’t! Thats why you wanted do it yourself with me as your cover. That’s why you feel I’m not capable enough to find out who the janitor is..”
“Some things are too dangerous, Trisha! And this is not a child’s play!” Becky snapped
Trisha turned to look at her
“Then what’s the need of dragging a child into it?” She stated, stressing the child. She opened the door and got out, slamming it and running into the house
Becky sighed as she watched her go into the house
“Arrrgh! Well, have a head! What will your dad do to me if anything happens to you!” She yelled at Trisha who she knew was not even hearing what she was saying.
She groaned in annoyance
“She’s such a child that can’t understand simple logic! All she wants to do is walk in to danger!” She yelled again at her imaginary companion.
If Trisha was someone else, she would have let her get into the dangerous part.
But Trisha was her daughter. Blood or not. And she loved her too much to let her walk into trouble.
