CHAPTER 11

EASTWOOD HIGH

Onda sat alone at the amphitheater, staring into space. She had been there ever since she left the cafeteria. Honestly, she was the most surprised and shocked about Kimberly.

Kimberly had never told her anything, even though they were best friends. She had always felt comfortable around her, knowing they were similar in some way or another. But now that she had changed completely, she wasn’t sure if they could continue as they were before.

Today, she had made a lot of new friends and seemed distant. She had become popular, and now Onda felt like she was no longer on the same level. She felt sad and somehow betrayed.

“Where could he be seriously…” Jade muttered, looking everywhere for Jayden.

He spotted Onda sitting alone with her head bowed down and wondered what she was doing there alone.

“Hey,” he called her attention, and she looked up at him.

“Ja…Jade,” she called, surprised.

“Why do you look so shocked?” he asked, pocketing his hands.

“No…it’s just…that…that…”

“Wait! Are you crying?” Jade pointed to her face.

She looked down quickly, wiping her tears underneath her glasses.

“No…I’m…not.”

“I’m right! You’re indeed crying! Hey, is something wrong?” He quickly sat beside her while she shifted away instantly. Jade shifted closer to her, and she made to stand up. However, Jade pulled her down, sitting her next to him and holding her hand tightly at the same time.

“I’m not letting you go unless you tell me what the matter is.”

“It’s…nothing, really…”

“Why are you crying, Onda?” he asked, friendly, rubbing her palm gently.

She sniffed.

“I’m worried.”

“About what?”

“My friendship…with Kim,” she replied slowly.

“Ohh…right? You should be,” Jade nodded, understanding.

“What should I do…? Jade, I…”

“Onda, calm down,” Jade held both her shoulders.

“She would never leave you…I trust Kim. Have you talked to her?” he asked, and she shook her head.

“I’m scared to…she’ll…she will get tired of me now…I don’t want to lose her, but…she’s…”

“Don’t you know Kim? She would never do such a thing to her best friend. And if you don’t trust her, then trust me…I assure you…she won’t, mm?” he said, and she nodded slowly.

“Poor you…you should talk to her and stop sitting here alone…you’re a girl, for goodness sake…you shouldn’t be alone all the time,” he messed her hair up.

“Thank you…Jade,” she smiled.

“Look at you blushing…” he smiled back, and she looked away shyly.

“By the way, did you perhaps see Jayden? He’s nowhere in sight.”

“Jay…den…no, I haven’t.”

“Oh, really! Where could this guy be? He’s not picking up either.”

“But is something wrong?”

“Uh…I think he had a disagreement with Kim earlier today, though I couldn’t figure out what it was.”

“Oh…”

“Anyway, if you see him, buzz me immediately,” he stood up about to leave.

“Jade!” Onda called him back.

“Uh, what?”

“Your digits,” she said shyly, while Jade understood.

“Your phone,” he requested, and she quickly gave it to him.

“Here,” he gave it back to her after typing his number.

“Then, anticipating to hear from you later…” he said, and she nodded.

“Goodbye, pumpkin…and please don’t cry anymore!” He winked before leaving.

Onda held her phone to her chest, grinning widely.

Onda squealed and hopped towards the restroom.

Because of the conversation she had just had with Jade, she had completely forgotten all her worries.

“I got his number….” She smiled as she entered the restroom.

She went into one of the stalls to do her business when she started hearing low moans from the neighboring stall.

She scrunched her nose in disgust and thought about leaving, but the voices sounded familiar.

“Why did you stop?” a deep voice whispered.

“I…I’m not like other girls you sleep with, Jade. And I don’t want to be. I just want to be special.”

“You mean…”

“Let’s go on a date.”

“A date? Of course…that’s nothing.”

“No…I don’t just want to be an object of your desire… I want us to genuinely date, not just have a fling. Actually… I’ve liked you for a while now. It’s okay if you don’t want to… I’m not forcing you… I just wanted to let you know,” Verna’s voice replied.

“You don’t have to answer immediately either… I know you don’t like commitment, so you may need some time to think about it. You can always get back to me when you’re ready… I’ll wait. Then… we can continue whatever we have started,” she added.

“See you later then…” Verna kssed him and winked before leaving the stall.

“Date for real?… Damn! She got me all excited for nothing. She’s such a great catch… should I give it a try? She’s not bad after all,” Jade mumbled before leaving as well.

Onda slumped on the toilet seat, covering her mouth.

“Right? I almost forgot the kind of person he is… he’s not someone… someone like me can handle. I must have been mistaken for a while…” Onda muttered to herself.

IN CLASS.

“Can you concentrate, Mr. Diego? It would be nice if you looked at the board and not at Kim,” Teacher Derek said, making everyone turn to look at Diego.

“I’ll look at whoever I want… it’s my eyes anyway… not yours, teacher,” Diego replied, eliciting some laughter.

Diego turned his gaze back to Kimberly, who was already looking at him. For the first time, he smiled at her. Kim almost thought she had seen wrong until he winked as well. She hiccuped and immediately faced the front. Diego smirked.

“One more word from you and you’ll be penalized,” the teacher said.

“I don’t give a dmn…” Diego muttered.

Verna scribbled something on a note and passed it to him. He looked at it and then looked away. Kim lightly sI.apped her cheeks, silently exhaling. She still couldn’t believe Diego was suddenly being flirty with her.

AFTER CLASS.

“Onda, wait! I think we need to talk,” Kimberly stopped Onda, who was about to leave the class. Onda nodded without resistance and sat back down.

“Why have you been distant? You ignore and avoid me. Are you upset with me or something?”

“I’m… not. I’m just being myself.”

“No… you’re not… you’ve changed.”

“Really? Am I the one who changed, or is it you?” Onda asked directly, looking at her. Then Kim had a realization.

“Ohhh… Onda, look, it’s…”

“You don’t need to explain… you don’t owe me any explanation. I won’t stop you if you want to stop being friends either.

“I’ll understand if you don’t want to associate with people like me. I’ve always known that one day this would happen,” Onda said, slowly walking away.

“Yes! I don’t want to be your friend anymore!” Kim said, stopping her.

“Why should I continue being friends with someone who doesn’t try to understand me? Friends are meant to support each other no matter what, to listen to each other and lean on each other instead of jumping to conclusions. You know what? A true friend stays by one’s side and never gives up, unlike you. A true friend loves till the end and doesn’t run away like a coward. A true friend gives a listening ear,” Kimberly added behind her.

Onda looked back immediately.

“Kiki…” She tried to move closer, but Kim stepped back.

“You don’t deserve to call me that. I know I made a mistake by not telling you this beforehand, but Onda, seriously… you messed up,” Kim glared before dashing out of the class. Onda slumped to the ground, tears sliding down her cheeks.

“What have I done?” She wept softly.
