CHAPTER 18

RACHEL’S pov.

R&F coffee and ice cream parlor, 06:24pm

We were getting ready to close, when the bells chimed and a man walked in. I can tell he’s one of Duncan’s bodyguards.

“Good evening, Mrs Baldwin” he greeted me.

“Good evening” I replied him.

“Mr Baldwin assigned me to bring you to him” he said.

I scoffed mentally, he couldn’t even come to pick me up personally.

“Mrs Baldwin?” he called.

“Oh, uh… I’m still trying to…”

“You’re not trying to do anything” Fatima cut me off. “Go on” she snatched my bag from the counter and shoved it in my arms, then started pushing me towards the door.

“What are you doing? And where did you pop out from? Aren’t you supposed to be in the toilet?”

“I won’t be in the toilet forever, darling” she replied.

I rolled my eyeballs and shook my head.

“Don’t forget to drop some food in her room, don’t forget to lock her door from outside too and…”

“I know what to do, mom, now go on, dad’s waiting” she said.

I sighed, but quietly followed Duncan’s bodyguard since I have no idea what to say to her at the moment.

“Why did you bring me here?” I asked as I alighted the car.

After driving for what felt like hours, we finally stopped but I realized we’re near a big sea, and I couldn’t help the silly scenarios that ran through my head.

What if this isn’t Duncan’s bodyguard? What if he brought me here to kll me? I was panicking inside until…

“My heartbeat” I heard Duncan’s voice.

He snaked his arms around my waist and hugged me from behind, then kssed my exposed shoulder.

“What are we doing here?” I asked.

“To have a yatch ride” he answered.

“A yatch ride?” he nodded. “But I don’t see one” I said looking at the sea.

“That’s because you’re not looking the right direction”

He turned my head right and I couldn’t control myself, I released a loud squeal.

“A yatch!” I exclaimed excitedly. “Is it yours?” I asked, even though I already guess it belongs to him.

“It’s yours”

“Mine?”

“Yeah, yours” he answered.

My eyes grew wide and my mouth fell open, I was so excited to the extent that I couldn’t any sound.

But a thought crossed my mind, my expression changed drastically and I eyed Duncan suspiciously.

“Hold on, are you trying to buy me off with this? Aren’t we supposed to be talking about you?”

He laughed.

“Well, we’re gonna be talking about me while riding on your yatch”

“Can’t we talk on land? Why are we having this conversation on water?”

He unwrap his arms from my waist, took my hand and started pulling me with him towards the yatch.

“To make it easy for me”

“To make what easy for you?” I asked.

“I’m just gonna throw you into the sea, in case you overreact after learning the truth about me” he said.

I know he was only bluffing, but I couldn’t help imagining the scene and scaring myself.

He laughed at my scared expression, which earned him a punch from me and he shut up instantly.

“Stop scaring yourself, my heartbeat, I wouldn’t try that even in my most wildest dream” he said leading me into the yatch.

“Wow, a candlelight dinner” I smiled and nodded slowly. “It’s quite r®mantic”

The atmosphere is very r®mantic and spectacular, it seemed as if the stars and moon are shining brightly above us, I don’t know how Duncan made it possible.

He pulled out a chair for me and I sat down, he followed suit, then handed me a bouquet of roses. Is this my Duncan? Isn’t this an indirect date?

I gasped mentally as a realization dawned on me, he’s tricked me into going on a date with him.

A man who seemed to be in his early forties came to our service.

“Good evening, Mr and Mrs Baldwin” he greeted us, but was mainly smiling at me. “I’m Ricardo Milos, and I’ll be your butler tonight”

“Oh, thank you” I thanked him since I don’t know what to say to him.

He simply smiled in return.

“Ricardo’s serve the food” Duncan told him.

“Yes, sir” Ricardo replied then headed off somewhere.

Not up to five minutes, Ricardo came back pushing a trolley with different kinds of foods, meats and drinks. My greedy stomach growled at the sight, which made Ricardo sniffled a laugh.

“Don’t tell me you haven’t eaten since lunch” Duncan said.

“I haven’t” I replied licking my lower lip that suddenly went dry.

He glared at me before turning to Ricardo.

“Hurry, my wife’s hungry” he urged Ricardo.

I couldn’t wait for Ricardo to finish serving the food before I started eating, Duncan sighed and shook his head.

“Better stop starving yourself or you’ll end up having stomach ulcers”

I ignored him and continued munching on the food.

Few minutes later

We’re halfway through when I recalled the reason we’re here, then I reached for a glass of water and took a few gulps before speaking.

“So…?” I trailed off, but he understood what I mean.

He stopped eating, reached for a tissue and cleaned his hands and mouth, then leaned back on his chair.

“Where should I begin?” he asked rhetorically.

“Let’s start with…why did you come to our orphanage? Are you an orphan like me?” I asked.

He stared at me for a moment, took a deep breath and shook his head slowly.

“Originally I wasn’t supposed to end up in the orphanage, it all started when…. ”
