HIDDEN WIFE : CHAPTER 31 – 40

Chapter 38

Few Minutes Later

“Alright, we’ll take our leave, we have a flight to catch” Mike said checking his wrist watch.

I was about asking if they were traveling, but Jacinta spoke before me.

“Right, Rachel” I turned my attention to her. “About the business strategy I was planning on learning from you, can we start next month?”

“Why?”

“My dad’s birthday is coming up, Mike and I are going to Paris today to celebrate it with the whole family” she explained.

Oh, that’s why Mike said they have a flight to catch.

“The whole family? Is your family very big?” Fatima asked.

“Yeah, mine and Mike’s family” she said and we nodded in understanding.

“Alright, don’t forget to give us a call sometimes” I told her.

“Of course” her eyes flicked to my head. “And quick recovery” she wished me.

“Thank you, but it’s not as serious as the doctor’s making it seem” I was referring to the bandage.

She laughed, pulled us into a short hug and headed out with Mike.
I yawned softly after they’ve left, in fact I’ve been yawning even when Mike and Jacinta were still here.

“I think you should take a nap” Fatima suggested.

My eyes moved to the wall in clock hanging on the wall, it’s already past 2pm. I laid down on the bed and kicked the blanket aside.

“Please turn on the AC, I’m feeling an internal heat”

“Hm” Fatima hummed and turned the AC on. “I’ll be here until your husband gets back” she said.

“Don’t talk to me, traitor!” I grumbled, referring to her not agreeing to help me sneak out.

She simply laughed in response. My heavy eyelids closed and sleep consumed me.

One Hour, Forty Minutes Later

I woke up with a strong urge to use the bathroom, only to see Duncan’s already back, he sat on the armchair and was typing away on his laptop.

“You’re back” I said, my voice was a little hoarse since I just woke from sleep.

He stopped typing and raised his head, he broke into a small smile when he saw me.

“You were sleeping when I came back, I didn’t wanna disturb you, so I let you sleep some more” he replied.

“Hm” I hummed as I climbed down from the bed. “What took you so long?” I asked, while approaching the bathroom.

“There was traffic because of an accident”

“I hope luck was on their side and no one died” I entered the bathroom.

“There wasn’t any dead bodies, but some were severely injured and I even helped bring some to the hospital” he answered.

I finished my business in the bathroom and came out, as if Duncan and I had a telepathic connection, I saw him peeling an orange which I was craving for at the time, because I saw myself eating oranges in my dream -weird human like me.

“Want an orange?” he asked.

“Yep” I replied and sat on the bed. “I can’t wait for tomorrow to come, laying on a hospital bed is very torturous” I whined.

“Sorry, baby” he sent me a wink and laughed at my ugly expression.

His phone suddenly beeped near me on the bedside table, I reached for it and saw it’s a message, then I quickly handed it to him.

“There’s a message” I told him.

“Here” he handed the orange he’s already peeled to me.

“Thanks” I said as I collected it.

His brows furrowed instantly in a tight frown as he read the message, then he shoved it in his jacket’s pocket and looked back at me with an apologetic expression.

“I.. I have an emergency meeting with the board of directors in my company” he said.

My head turned towards the wall clock.

“It’s already 4:57pm, can’t the meeting be move to tomorrow?” I asked.

“Uh.. no, it’s very urgent and my presence is required”

“But you… ”

“My heartbeat, I really need to attend this meeting, something came up and I’m gonna lose a twelve billion deal if I don’t attend this meeting”

My eyes narrowed slightly, why do I feel like he’s lying? If he wasn’t lying why would he look apologetic?

“I don’t think I’ll be back early, so I won’t join you for dinner”

He paused and looked at me, like he’s expecting me to say something but I didn’t utter any words, I have nothing to say.

“Fatima will order takeout for you, and keep you company until I get back” he said.

I didn’t say anything. I dropped the orange back on the small tray, laid on the bed with my hands behind my head and closed my eyes.

“I think I’ll catch more sleep” I told him.

He stayed silent for a moment, staring at my face and sighed.

“I’ll try my best to come back early” he kssed my forehead and rushed out.

I sat up immediately he left and glared at the door, he’s definitely hiding something. Could it be his rivals has sent him a threatening text?

“Why are you frowning?” Fatima asked as she walked in.

“Where is Duncan going?” I asked her back.

“I don’t know” she shrugged. “Aren’t you his wife? Shouldn’t you know where he’s going?”

“He didn’t tell me”

“Oh”

She reached for the orange I that I abandoned.

“Fatima, let’s follow him and see where he’s going”

“What? No, we can’t”

“Why not?” I frowned.

“Mr Baldwin wouldn’t like it, he didn’t tell you where he’s going because he didn’t want you to know” she said. “Maybe she’s trying to protect you”

I glared at her and jumped off the bed.

“To h’ll with protecting me, you have two options, Fatima, either you come with me and I’ll defend you in front of Duncan, or you stay here and I’ll go alone then you’ll have to explain why you let me leave my ward unguarded”

Fatima sighed, she dropped the orange and got up.

“Fine, I’ll take you” she said, she knows I’m being serious right now and she can’t stop me from leaving.

We’ve been following Duncan’s car for some time now, we boarded a cab so he won’t notice we’re following him.

We watched Duncan’s car drove through a big gate with big and beautiful buildings inside, I raised my head and my eyes captured the words boldly written on the gates.

‘The Westin Bonaventure Hotel And Suites’

A hotel? I thought he said there’s an emergency meeting at his company? Who is he meeting in a hotel then?

Just then, I saw a woman looking around suspiciously, she’s covering her head with a scarf and wore a pair of sunglasses, it’s like she’s disguising herself. I couldn’t see her face clearly, but her stature seemed rather familiar.

“Isn’t that Tasha Wood?” Fatima asked exactly what I had in mine.

I narrowed my eyes and gritted on my teeth.

What is she doing? Why did she come immediately Duncan drove in? Or is she the one Duncan’s meeting here? Is this the very important meeting he’s talking about?
