Wetland Holiday Inn, room 0028

“Here, wear these clothes” an advanced lady threw some clothes at Tasha.

Tasha caught the clothes, and hurriedly wore them as she released relieved breaths.

“That was close” she whispered. “Thanks for rescuing me, Ms Cara” she thanked the woman, who’s now known as Ms Cara.

“Of course, I wouldn’t abandon you” Ms Cara said.

“What’s the next step?” Tasha asked.

Ms Cara smirked victoriously.

“Don’t worry about the next step, leave it to me” she said.

RACHEL’S pov

Baldwin’s Mansion, LA

I stared directly in Duncan’s eyes while waiting for his response, he took a step closer to me, but I jumped back as though fire’s consumed his body and I don’t wanna get burn.

He stared back at me in silence, as if he’s trying to read my expression, but I tried my best to keep my face void of every expressions.

“It’s was.. uh..”

Uh? Is he thinking of lying to me right now?

“It was great”

“It was great?” I asked.

“Yeah, we talked about a lot of things” he replied with a smile.

I simply stared at him.

“You really did meet with Mr Ferrari?” I asked again.

“Yeah”

“Where did you two meet?”

“Uh.. at Wetland” he answered.

I chuckled mentally. He could tell me the name of the hotel, but not the person he met with?

“Are you telling me the truth?”

“Of course, I won’t dare lie to you”

He tried to close the space between us and reach for my hand, but I stepped back again, creating an even bigger space between us.

I shook my head in dismay.

“You’re making it hard for me to trust, Duncan”

“I…”

“You’re lying to my face, Duncan”

“My heartbeat, I…”

“Don’t call me that!” I snapped at him. “When are you gonna be wholeheartedly honest with me, and most importantly be honest with yourself?”

It seemed like he wanted to say something, but decided against it because it might get me angrier.

“Take Mariah for example, when are you gonna tell her about her deceased husband? Or are you gonna continue lying to her? Don’t she has a right to know about her own husband’s de.ath? Or are you keeping it from her for her own good?” I asked. “Because that’s what you always tell me” I added.

“Di-did you know something?” he asked in a short stutter, I could even notice fear in his voice.

“Is there something I wasn’t supposed to see?” I asked him back.

“No, I…”

“No?”

He closed his eyes, pumped his cheeks and puffed out some air. He opened his eyes and saw me looking expectantly at him.

“I don’t know what you know, or whatever you are thinking right now, but there’s definitely a perfect explanation for it”

“Don’t give me that ‘there’s a perfect explanation for it’ sht!” I warned him. “And, are you pretending like you don’t know? Or you really don’t know what I’m talking about?”

He opened his mouth to say something, there’s a sudden knock on the door and he turned around to answer it.

“Mr Baldwin, nanny Pamela wanna have a talk with you, and Mariah’s leaving” Fatima’s voice sounded from outside.

“I’ll be there in a minute” he answered, then I heard Fatima walking away.

He turned back to me with an annoying smile, then gestured towards the door.

“It seemed like it’s pretty urgent, I’ll go check on them and come back real quick to answer any questions you have”

I frowned.

“You mean our discussion isn’t urgent?”

“No, no, that’s not what I meant”

“Then what… ”

“I’ll be back in a jiffy” he said, and dashed towards the door without giving me any chance to utter another word.

I watched him as he rushed out of our room, it’s almost as if he’s been looking for ways to avoid answering me honestly, it’s like he doesn’t wanna lie to me, but he doesn’t wanna tell me the truth either.

I shut my eyes and gulped down all my hurts, I reached for my phone and dialed a number, I never knew it’s gonna come to this but I’ve got no choice, it seemed like this is the only way out.

I can’t continue hurting every damn time, I must do something to save myself, and help Duncan too.

“Rachel?” his voice came up.

“I need your help, and it’s urgent”

“Sure” then I hanged up, and fell on my bed as I tried my best to refrain my tears from falling down.

THIRD PERSON’S pov

Mr Baldwin’s steps faltered, and his brows furrowed instantly when he saw Mariah standing near two luggages, like she was ready to leave.

He looked around and saw everyone, (nanny Pamela, Mrs Jackson and Fatima) standing next to her. Fatima’s hand was on her shoulder, as though she’s silently consoling her (Mariah), or maybe begging her to stay.

None of them has seen him though, since they were all backing him. He cleared his throat to make his presence known, and they all turned around.

“What’s going on?” he asked with a tilted head.

Mariah smiled, and shook his head, indicating all is well.

“Duncan, I.. ” she briefly held her lower lip between her teeth, and inhaled sharply. “I wanna ask you a question, and I need you to be honest with me”

Mr Baldwin stared at her, from the look on her face he could already guess what she wanted to ask him, but he nodded anyway.

“It’s about Jamal, where is he?” she asked him.

“Uh… ”

“Just be honest with me, I really need to know what’s going on with my husband”

Mr Baldwin shut his eyes when his wife’s words relayed on his mind, he decided it’s time to tell Mariah the truth, but how would he tell he -that’s his biggest

“I’m not really good at this, but Jamal…”

“Jamal is de.ad” she cut in. “Right?”

He simply stared at her blankly, not knowing if he should agree or not.
Mariah’s eyes welled up, but she tried to blink her tears away and smiled.

“I know he’s been d.ead since three weeks ago” she said.

“You knew?”

She nodded.

“Yes”

“I.. I’m sorry” was all he could blurt out at the moment.

His eyes scanned them, then settled on Fatima who’s pulling a sad face, he narrowed his eyes at her as if he’s telepathically asking if she was the one who told Mariah about Jamal’s de.ath.

Fatima met his narrowed eyes, and quickly shook her head in denial immediately she understood the message he was passing to her.

“It’s fine, Duncan” Mariah said, which made Mr Baldwin averted his gaze back to her. “Don’t feel guilty because Jamal’s de.ath isn’t a surprise to me”

“Huh?”

Everyone frowned at her words, they’re wondering why she said her husband’s de.ath isn’t a surprise to her.

“Jamal would have d!ed even without being sh®t”

“What do you mean?” Fatima asked, she couldn’t hold back her curiosity anymore, and she sounded like she doesn’t appreciate Mariah’s suspense.

“Jamal’s a ¢ancer patient”

“What?” Mr Baldwin frowned.

His eyes narrowed even more when he recalled how healthy and vibrant Jamal was, before he was sh®t.

“We found out about his ¢ancer when it was too late, and besides, we’re a little bit broke so…” she trailed off, and gulped down a lump in her throat. “He was in his last days” she added.

“Oh, good heavens” Mrs Jackson gasped in an almost inaudible whisper.

“I’m kinda glad he died the way he died, at least he escaped some pains and sorrows” she smiled sadly.
