Past Mistakes
Chapter Nineteen
“Love is just a word until someone comes along and gives it meaning.” – Paulo Coelho
I woke up at dawn and saw Ares sleeping beside me. Peacefully.
A feeling of joy flowed deep inside me. At last, I caught him on bed.
My body trembled with excitement. A delightful shiver of wanting ran through me. My pulses quickened and my heart thumped erratically.
I moved closer to him. Smelling his warm masculine scent. The sweetly intoxicating masculine musk of his body overwhelmed me, awakened the desire I yearned to quench since we k!ssed at the coffee shop.
I studied his lean dark chiselled face. He was a very handsome man and amazingly s*xy. Like a Greek god. His scar made him look more mysterious and intriguing… like a delinquent bad boy… but he showed his more passionate and sensual side… and that made me love him more.
Yes. I love him.
I loved him when I was young… and that love turned to hate. And now, I’m loving him again.
I can’t understand why it’s easy for me to love Ares again. I keep blaming my fickle heart for making me feel this way. How can I be so weak? Giving in to this feeling. Overruling my mind with my heart. Letting myself fall on this trap called love.
Is it really love I feel for him? Or lust? I can’t tell the difference though. All I know is that I wanted him in my life again. To spend quality time together, other than making love. To get lost in conversations and forget about the passing time, like we did in the coffee shop. Motivates and encourages each other . And spending the rest of our lives together with our kids.
I let out a long sigh. I studied Ares’ profile again and noticed the dark circles under his eyes. He was not sleeping well for the past few days. He was grieving and yet managed the things need to be done for his late grandfather.
I should sleep again, to stop this craziness. I clenched my fingers into fists to stop the ache of reaching out and touching him.
I moved back to the edge of the bed and closed my eyes, diverted my thoughts to cupcakes, pastries and chocolates.
“Rachel?”
My body trembled at the sound of Ares’ soft voice. My eyes flew open instantly and held his.
“You can’t sleep?” He asked.
“Yeah.”
He was staring at me. The moonlight illuminated his face and his eyes gleamed like black diamonds that sent tremor through me.
A hot ache grew inside me again. This time, it grew more intense. My bre@sts tingled against the silky fabric of my nightie. I was craving for Ares’ touch… and k!sses… I wanted him so bad… like a fever that he could only cure.
“Come here.” He whispered.
My body was on fire, flaming like an inferno. Without hesitation, I moved closer over him. Our eyes locked as our breathing came in unison. His large hand held my face before he lifted his head up to meet my lips with his.
All the walls within me shattered with the hunger of his k!sses. He forced my lips to open more with his thrusting tongue and without shame, I returned his k!sses with reckless abandon. K!ssing him with savage intensity.
“Oh God, Rachel.” He groaned before I felt the heady sensation of his lips against my neck. He sat up and made me straddled him. I felt his erection growing, so hard and potent against the core of my desire. The sensation was so delicious that slowly I moved and grind myself on top of him, making him closed his eyes and moaned with intense pleasure.
I drank into the sweetness of his k!ss, running my hands through his hair. Ares hands caressed my back, my waist and my thighs. Shivers of delight followed in every touch of his hands. Then gently, he eased me down onto the bed and stopped k!ssing me.
“What?” I asked him.
He was breathing so hard and I could feel his hands that were grasping my arms, trembled. He shook his head and exhaled heavily. “We have to stop, Rachel. We have to wait.”
“Wait for what?”
He let out a frustrated drawl and tunnelled his hair with his fingers. “I want to make everything right with you this time. When we make love, I want it to be very special… memorable to you, to us. We’ll go somewhere romantic, peaceful and relaxing. Somewhere that’s just you and me.”
“You mean an island?”
“Yeah right. So when you’ll wake up the following morning, you won’t be able to leave. You’ll be trap with me.” He chuckled.
“I won’t leave you, Ares. I love you.” I whispered softly to him.
Ares looked stun for a moment. “What did you say?”
“I said I love you.” This time, I said the words more clearly to him.
His expression suddenly lightened. He pulled me in his arms again and kissed me deeply. Then he said. “Go back to sleep, Rachel.”

Many relatives and friends attended the funeral of Mr. John Niarchos. I was with Ares most of the time, holding his hand or grasping his arm. There was a reception after the funeral. A gathering for friends and loved one together to remember the deceased. Ares introduced me to many people whom I couldn’t even remember most of their names.
Ares excused himself and talked to a group of men. I told him that I would go to the bathroom as well.
I was fixing my hair when Ares’ mom, Caitlyn Borris entered the bathroom.
“Whew! Too many people there like paparazzi, asking me a lot of questions. My life, my new husband, my career… they don’t really care. They just want to gossip.”
I smiled at her. “I thought you’re used to it being a supermodel before.”
“I used to like the attention I was getting when I was younger, it increased my popularity. But now.. not anymore. I want my life private.”
We laughed together.
“Let’s go somewhere private, so we can have a little chat before all of us leave Greece.”
“Yeah sure.” I answered. Caitlyn along with other friends and relatives would be leaving tonight using Ares’ private plane. Ares and I would be taking the commercial flight back to the US tomorrow morning.
“Come, Rachel. I’ll show you something as well.” We went to a room full of huge paintings, antique jars and figurines. At the corner were many old collections like swords, coins, books, guns, etc.
“Do you know that this room alone is worth billion dollars?” Caitlyn said before looking at a huge painting. “This one is worth a hundred million.”
“Really… well, it’s beautiful.”
Caitlyn laughed. “Beautiful? Nah.. It’s just a piece of shit covered with dust.”
I laughed with her. “Right.”
“Who gives a damn about these paintings and junks anyway.”
“Yeah, it’s creepy thinking how old these items are.”
“I hate antiques. It reminded me of graveyards, coffins and ghost.” Caitlyn braced herself.
“Me too.”
“Really?” Caitlyn laughed again. “Too bad, you’re husband is inheriting all of these.”
“OH!”
Caitlyn told me about her marriage to Ares’ father. She was only nineteen at that time and just started her modelling career. She was forced by her mother to marry Mr. Owen Niarchos – for money.
She didn’t learn to love Owen Niarchos. But when she gave birth to her twins, Ares and Mars, she began to think of marriage in a positive way. She became so happy with her boys.
Ares was always the naughty, stubborn and smart one. While Mars was the obedient, good-tempered and well-behaved. The boys fought most of the time because their personality clashed. So, Caitlyn brought Mars with her wherever she went, and leave Ares with his dad or his grandfather.
Caitlyn told me about the tragic death of Mars. He accidentally stepped off the edge of the cliff in her hometown in Colorado when he was nine years old.
She cried while telling me the story. She said she blamed Ares for what happened. She believed what her uncle said that Ares pushed Mars off the cliff.
She made Ares miserable, blaming him for the death of his brother. She was so stupid not to listen to Ares’ explanation – instead she disowned and left him to the care of his grandfather. She was so heartless and selfish. She didn’t realize that she lost Mars and Ares at the same time. After a few months, she divorced Owen Niarchos.
Caitlyn talked to Ares yesterday… after a long time. She missed Ares so much and she regretted what she did to him – blocking him out of her life. She apologized and was thankful that Ares didn’t make it hard for her. He forgave her instantly.
Ares said he was at fault too. He forced Mars to go to the cliff to fly their kites. But he kept on saying to Mars to stay away from the edge but he wouldn’t listen.
Ares and her mother settled their issues already and now that their wounds were healed, it was time to make up for their lost times together.
