THE MIRACLE I NEED : Episode 61 – 70

EPISODE 70

As Pete freshened up he couldn’t help thinking about what to tell Ella and Ken as his excuse for going clubbing with his caretaker. He wasn’t sure he wanted either of them to know about his feelings for Kathleen yet. He didn’t want interference from anyone until himself and Kathleen were fully on board with each other.

He was surprised to see Ken in the living room when he stepped out of his bedroom, “When did you come in? I was just going to call you.”

“Really? Wetin sup?” Ken asked as he stood up to shake hands with Pete.

“Where is Amanda?” He asked Chidi, when he noticed Amanda was no longer there dancing.

“She took Isioma to her bedroom to show her something.” Kathleen’s mother answered since Chidi’s eyes was fixed on the television where he was watching the replay of a football match he had missed the previous day.

“Okay. Let’s sit by the small parlor.” Pete said to Ken as he picked up a two glasses of wine and a bottle of wine from the wine bar and headed for the little parlor which was just beside the dining section.

“How far?” Ken asked, thinking Pete was probably going to tell him about his date with Kathleen.

“You know Kemi is around?” Pete asked in a low voice so no one would over hear them as he poured the wine into both glasses and handed one to Ken.

“Oh! She is?” Ken asked, feigning surprise. He knew he was probably supposed to at least tell Pete since Pete had been encouraging him about his feelings for his sister, but he had promised Ella he was going to keep it between them.

“Yes. I was thinking, maybe all four of us could go to a club tonight, so you can have time to talk to her. I mean, me, you, Kemi and Kathleen.” Pete said without meeting Ken’s eyes as he sipped from his wine glass.

“Kathleen?” Ken asked feigning surprise, “Will that spirikoko agree to go to the club?”

“Yes. She has never been to the club so I suggested she could join us. You know, so that Kemi wouldn’t think anything is up.” Pete said making it seem like he was doing Ken a favor as just carrying Kathleen along.

“Oh! But wait o, you’ve started liking her abi? This one you’re already taking her clubbing! The babe done dey enter your eye!” Ken said with a teasing chuckle.

“Stop saying nonsense! Are you in or not?” Pete asked changing the subject.

“But you for call me tell me nau! (You should have called to inform me of this?) I’m not dressed for clubbing, and I doubt Kemi is either, or is she?” Ken asked as he sipped from the wine.

“You still have enough time to go home and dress up, or you could just buy something on our way there. I don’t think Kathleen has clothes for clubbing either.” Pete said thoughtfully, “Maybe I should go and ask her, then use the opportunity to tell Kemi about it.” Pete said as he dropped his glass of wine and stood up.

“Just say you want to see her face. Else I see no reason you can’t just call them on the phone. Kai! My guy my guy! You’re falling for the girl!” Ken said with a loud guffaw, “I don’t blame you for falling for her sha, you already have your mother in-law and sister in-law in the house, so the whole thing is easy.” Ken cackled at his joke making Pete pun¢h his chest.

“Ba$tard. See this idiot I’m trying to help to win my sister’s heart. Don’t let me change my mind o, else I won’t allow you date my sister again.” Pete warned.

“Haba! They nuh dey play with you again?” Ken asked, still trying to contain his laughter. He was just going to keep teasing Pete until he finally opens up to him about liking Kathleen for real.

Pete decided it was probably best to call Kathleen so as not to attract the attention of her mother, so he returned to his bedroom before dialing her number.

“I just finished trying out the things you bought.” Kathleen said immediately she picked the call, since Ella was using the convenience room.

“Is my sister there with you?” Pete asked self-consciously.

“No, she’s using the bathroom. How much did those clothes cost?” Kathleen asked, unable to stop feeling guilty about wearing such expensive clothes for just one night.

“Haven’t you been taught that it’s not polite to ask a person how much they spent in buying you a gift?” Pete asked, trying to dodge the question.

“You know me, I’m not polite. So how much did you spend?” Kathleen asked stubbornly..

“Why are you asking?”

“Because it all looks too expensive for just one single date!” Kathleen said impatiently.

“It’s your very first date, isn’t it?” Pete asked, making her heart skip a beat, “I figured it’s probably your first date, so I want to make it as memorable for you as I can. Besides, I don’t think it’s too expensive. I’m sure it’s going to look gorgeous on you.” Pete said with a smile making Kathleen sigh. When he puts it that way, how was she supposed to argue.

“Just don’t buy me something so expensive. I’m not from your kind of background, so it is just wasteful to me.” Kathleen said making Pete roll his eyes. He wondered what she would think when she finds out where he was taking her to for their date.

“I’m sorry, my hands are tied. That’s not something I can promise you. If you wanted someone who would buy you cheap things, you shouldn’t have taken your mother’s advise and come to my house dressed that way.” Pete said with a chuckle making Kathleen close her eyes in embarrassment.

“And the wig is not just for our date. I want my woman looking expensive.”

“I never agreed that I was your woman.” Kathleen reminded him in a low voice.

“I already announced to the staff that you are, remember? I have a reputation to uphold. Plus I told you, you are my woman even if you don’t know it yet.” Pete said, and was about to hang up when he remembered why he had actually called.

“Hold on, that’s not why I called. You don’t have clothes for clubbing, do you?”

“Clothes for clubbing? What am I supposed to wear to a club other than my normal clothes?” Kathleen asked with a frown.

“Jeez! I won’t answer that. Just inform my sister that we are going clubbing tonight, so she should get you the appropriate clothes… And tell her Femi is coming with us.” Pete said before hanging up.

“Are you nervous?” Pete asked when he turned to give Kathleen a sideways glance as he drove them to the club.

THE MIRACLE I NEED : Episode 61 – 70

Ken and Ella were driving ahead in Ken’s car since Pete had suggested that there was no need for Ella to drive her own car, especially as driving in the dark wasn’t really her thing. Both Ken and Ella had agreed to go ahead with the plan making it seem like it was actually Pete’s idea.

“I don’t know. I just don’t feel okay deep down, you know? Like I feel I’m going somewhere I shouldn’t go. And then this dress, I feel it’s too exposed.” Kathleen said, referring to the open back glitter gown which stopped just slightly above her knee.

“It’s because it’s your first time going to the club. And we couldn’t exactly have you wearing your church clothes to the club. Besides I don’t think the gown is anywhere half as exposed as what you wore to my house the other night.” Pete pointed out.

“That’s different.” Kathleen protested.

“What’s different about it?” Pete asked curiously, turning to look at her..

“That was just you, this one is a club filled with…”

“Just me?” Pete asked with a teasing grin, “By just me do you mean you’re comfortable with just me seeing you dressed like this?” Pete asked making her sigh.

“I didn’t mean that.”

“Really? So what did you mean?” He asked, cocking his head to the side with that same silly grin on his face as he waited for her to explain what she meant.

“I mean that was indoors, this is outdoor with people I don’t know staring at me.” Kathleen explained with a worried frown.

“Don’t worry, I got you.” Pete promised, “But why have you never gone to the club though? Were there no clubs in your area or at the place you schooled?”

“What is so special about going to a club? Is it a qualification I need to get a job?”

“Well, not exactly. But it’s just one of those things I think an adult should experience. You understand?”

“No. I don’t think anyone has to experience it.” Kathleen said stubbornly.

“So why are you doing this then?”

“You asked me to, remember?” Kathleen asked even though she knew that wasn’t the only reason she had agreed to do it.

“So you’re saying the only reason you’re going with us is because I asked you to? You like me that much?” Pete asked with a teasing grin expecting her to deny it immediately.

“Maybe.” Kathleen said with a shrug, surprising Pete.

“Maybe?”

“Maybe I like you enough to want to do this because you asked.”

“Does that mean if I ask that we have sx you will agree?” Pete asked making her frown.

“Of course not! I have to want it too to do it, and there is no way I want premarital sx!” Kathleen said in a rush making Pete chuckle.

“So you are saying you actually wanted to go clubbing but used me as an excuse.” Pete said making Kathleen open and then snap her mouth shut when nothing came out.

“I thought as much. Cause you agreed way too easily.” Pete said with a grin. It was good to see that Miss Perfect also had some worldly desires in her. This had him wondering his how much more ‘things of the world’ she desired but was looking for someone to push her to it.

Kathleen said nothing and just looked at the road ahead of her. It was true that she had always thought of going clubbing at least just once to see what it was like, but it was also true that she had agreed to go because he had asked. She had felt like returning the favour since he had willingly followed her to church, and she had also gone because he had said he was traveling, and someone she had felt like spending every available time with him, even if it meant clubbing. But she wasn’t going to tell him any of this.

“So since you’ve been longing to go clubbing, why haven’t you?” Pete asked on a serious note now.

Kathleen said nothing for sometime, and just when Pete was about to give up on her answering, she decided to speak, “I’ve not been longing to go clubbing. I’ve only been curious about it, so it’s not necessarily a longing. And about your question, you have to first promise not to laugh.” Kathleen said, making Pete smile.

“I can’t promise that. But I can promise not to park the car by the roadside to laugh. That means I will laugh modestly.”

Kathleen sighed, “Well, I’ve always had this fear that what if it’s the day I choose to go clubbing that rapture will take place? After serving God so faithfully, he will find me in a club at the last minute? Or what if police raids the club and arrest me along with others? Or what if a fight breaks out and I get caught up in all of it or they’re shooting and a stray bullet hits me?” Kathleen said making Pete roar with laughter.

“So you’re no longer scared of those things?” Pete asked trying to control his laughter.

“Well, I already prayed before leaving the house. I told God I’m just going for something like an excursion, so if Jesus comes, he should know I’m not there for fun.” Kathleen said with a serious expression which told Pete she was actually serious.

“You really told God that?” Pete asked with a chuckle.

“Yes.”

He could swear that he had never met someone as beautifully naive as Kathleen in his entire life, and that was probably what endeared her to him the most. She was so innocent in her thoughts, yet so bold and ill tempered. She was just a combination of everything he needed in his life right now. She made everything seem so funny even without trying. And he doubted that she knew she had such a great sense of humor.

“So what about being arrested or being caught up in a fight?” Pete asked with a smile.

“Well, you’re there, and so is your sister, and Ken who is a lawyer. So I’m sure I’ll be safe.” Kathleen said matter of factly making Pete shake his head.

“You’re really something Kath.”
