CHAPTER THREE

All the pupils in the class stood up and ran towards the extreme end of the class with so much fear in their eyes.

Each of them calling me different names.

The teacher screamed with a loud voice and everywhere became silent like a grave yard.

She asked them to all go back to their seat and they obeyed immediately because no one was willing to receive any stroke from the long cane in her hands.

The teacher started addressing the pupils while I stood behind her because I was very much afraid.

She told them, “I know you all are surprised to see for the first time someone without arms and extremely short to be in your class and might be wondering how she is going to cope most especially in writing.

Well this girl standing here is a normal human being just like you all but with some physical disabilities.

You don’t need to run away or be scared of her rather treat her as friend.

Her name is Rita and would be your classmate henceforth”.

The teacher pointed to a small table and chair which was brought by my mummy the previous week because I was just too short to sit on the normal chair used by others.

As I was walking slowly to my seat, each person was adjusting his or her body posture in order to prevent any contact with me.

I was very restless.

I felt the ground should open up and just swallow me.

This wasn’t what I was expecting at all in school. Oh! I wish I was never born.

Immediately I sat down on the chair, the teacher left the class and the pupils were all looking at her through the window and when they realized she was out of sight, they all jumped up from their seat and ran towards me.

Some were laughing at me while some were just looking at me with wonder.

A boy clapped his hands signifying to others to keep shut so that they can hear him as he was about to talk.

He looked at me from head to toes and asked me if I was a witch. He said he knows that I cannot be a normal human being just as the teacher explained.

Another boy laughed out loudly and said ” how is she even going to write when she has no arms?” As he was talking, another boy came closer to me and gave me a heavy slap on my cheek and ask me to revenge if I can.

Tears were just flowing freely from my eyes. If not for my disability, I know I am older than all these pupils and would have been in a higher class and would never be treated like trash.

The pupils whom I thought would be very friendly turned out to be the worst creatures I have ever met in my entire life just within some minutes of entering the classroom.

Some even dragged my hair and others dragged me from my little chair and made me sit on the bare floor.

I couldn’t do or say anything. All my desire at that point was that the teacher should just come to my rescue.

I made up my mind right there and then that I will never step my feet in school anymore.

All of a sudden, someone shouted ” the teacher is coming” and they all ran to their seat and sat down quietly as if nothing happened.

I was still sitting on the floor when I heard the voice of the female teacher. “Where is Rita?”

I quickly managed to stand on my feet and the teacher was shocked with the way my hair was rough and tears on my face.

“What about happened to you?” She screamed out loudly. I couldn’t say anything.

I was just short of words. She told me that my mum came back to give me something I forgot to collect from her and that she is waiting for me outside.

Immediately I heard that mum was outside, I felt peace and decided there and then that I must go back with mum because now I believe that school is actually not meant for someone like me.

I walked out of the class with all eyes looking towards my direction.

I finally sighted my mum and walked to her.

Mummy was shocked with how rough I look just within some minutes I entered the class.

“Rita what happened to you”? Mummy asked me as I began to weep profusely.

All I could tell my mum was that “I am not meant to be here.

I told her this is not my place.

They said I am a witch and not a normal human being.

I hate school, I hate my life.

I hate this world. I want to go home mummy” I wept bitterly.

That experience made me hate myself the more.

Since that day till now I lost my passion for education.

But while all the pupils were laughing at me, I noticed a young girl looking at me with pity on her face.

Why was this girl looking at me with tears in her eyes? Since that day I haven’t stopped thinking about her.

The knock on the door brought me back to reality.

Who is knocking at the door? I know definitely that Mum might have gone to the farm and nobod visits our house.

Oh! As I opened the door I was shocked to see…

To be continued…
