WHEN LOVE IS GONE: Chapter 41 – 50

Adele’s pov ?

Mike’s kitchen….

“… thanks for your patronage” I said to a customer as he exit the restaurant.

A tired grunt left my mouth and I grimace, when my eyes landed on the table the customer just vacated.

There wasn’t any rush today at the restaurant, but I’m d*mn tired and sleepy.. after all, I haven’t been getting enough sleep since Davis gave me sleepless nights.

I would have loved to stay at home and sleep to my heart content, but that wouldn’t look good.. I might lose my job for that.

My legs groggily moved towards the table, to clear the plates.

“Adele!” Elvis called me.

I lifted my head and saw him approaching me, he looked serious as though I’ve committed an unforgivable sin.

“Elvis….”

“The customer that just left, he stole from us” he said.

“What?!” I exclaimed.

My eyebrows furrowed.

“How? I was with him the whole time” I said.

“The storage keys, where is it?” He asked.

“The storage key, it’s….”

I quickly searched my pockets, my eyes grew wide and my mouth fell opened when I noticed it’s gone missing.

“But how? I didn’t see him try to take it…”

A bang on the table cut me off, Elvis sent me a very harsh glare.

“We wouldn’t have known if the chief security didn’t notice it on time…”

I bowed my head, awaiting his serious scolding cause I know that’s what’s coming next.

“… this has never happened with you before, what’s going on with you today? You’ve also been giving the wrong orders.. if you’re tired, you should resign!”

I shook my head.

“No, Elvis… I was just… ”

“Just what? Do you think this is a charity organization?”

By now the sleep that has been disturbing me, vanished.. I’m wide awoke.

“Everyone came to work here and I’d advise you do same too, be vigilant and… ”

He trailed off when he studied my expression, he shut his eyes and inhaled deeply.

“Fine, I’m gonna stop scolding you.. but we’re changing the lock and the expenses will be deducted… ”

Oh no! Please don’t deduct it from my pay! Please don’t, I have plans for this month…

“That won’t be necessary!” My brows furrowed, Clark?

I turned around and saw Clark dragging the customer with him, he pushed the customer forward and he fell on his knees.

“Here’s the thief” he said.

Elvis smiled and quickly greeted Clark with a bow.

“Good afternoon, Mr Evans”

He reached out for a handshake, Clark grasp his but quickly withdrew his hand.

“Here’s the thief, you can punish him in whatever way you want”

“Yes, yes” Elvis said.

I released a sigh, thankfully, my pay is safe.

Clark turned to me, he winked at me and collected the rag I was holding.. he dumped it on the table and grasped my hand.

“Elvis, Adele’s taking the rest of the day off.. can she?” He asked.

Though his question put Elvis in a tight spot, he asked the question in a way Elvis can’t say no.

Elvis grinned, which I know it’s fake.

“Of course, of course”

“Thank you!” Clark said.

He wrapped his arm around my waist and led me towards the exit.. I turned and looked at Elvis.

He’s calling for security men nearby, I turned away from him and faced Clark.

“How did you know he stole something from us?” I asked.

He chuckled.

“Actually, the security men caught him”

“Huh?”

“They caught him, I just brought him in to show off” he said.

I rolled my eyeballs and scoffed loudly.

“And here I was, thinking my hero came to save me”

“I did saved you” he said.

I elbowed his ribcage and he groaned shortly, then burst into laughter.

“Where are we going? Or where are you taking me rather?” I asked.

“It’s a surprise, you’ll see when we get there”

“I hate surprises”

“Well, get use to them now”

We stopped by his car, he held the door for me and I got in the passenger seat.. he rounded the car and got in the driver’s seat.

“Wait…”

I stopped him before he could start the car, he waited and stared at me.

I fastened my seatbelt, then turned to him slightly and put my hands together.

“Please, I’m begging you.. please, don’t drive on speed today, I don’t wanna die yet”

He chuckled.

“I was too reckless last time, I promise this time will be different”

Though I’m not convinced, but I felt a little bit relaxed and I leaned back on the seat.

“Let’s go” he said and started the car, then drove off into the road.

I clung on my seatbelt and pray for our safety.

Thanatos pov ?

Molina’s retirement home

I parked outside the big gates, I stepped out of my car and also helped my son out.

I carried him in my arms.

His eyes lit up when he noticed where we are.. he turned to me with a big smile.

“We are here to visit gran-gran?” He asked.

My brows furrowed in confusion, who’s gran-gran? I questioned myself.

“Yes” I answered him anyway.

Gran-gran might be someone Jasmine brings him here to meet..his grin widened at my reply.

“Mr O’Briens” Peter greeted me with a nod.

“Who did Jasmine visited here?” I asked him.

He shook his head.

“I don’t know sir”

“What do you mean you don’t know?!”

“I didn’t go inside with her… ”

I cut him off with a deadly glare, he bowed his head to avoid my eyes.

“Why did you let her go in alone? Don’t you know what’s going on now?!”

“I’m sorry, Mr O’Briens”

“Save your sorry and take me to her!” I snapped.

He took a few steps away from me and shook his head again, I frowned.

“What’s the meaning of that?” I gritted out.

“I don’t know where she is inside”

Right…I forgot he just told me he didn’t go inside with her…I clenched my jaw and balled my fist, is this guy normal?

If I wasn’t carrying Davis, I would have landed a punch on his nose.. I faced Davis.

“Do you know where gran-gran is?” I asked him.

“Yeah”

“Can you take me there?”

He nodded quickly.

“Let’s go then”

I glared at Peter one more time, before entering the premises.. Peter’s following behind.

WHEN LOVE IS GONE: Chapter 41 – 50

Jasmine’s pov ?

Ma Gloria gulped the water, flushing the drug hanging in her throat.

“I told you, those meds are so bitter” she whined.

She grimaced in a funny way and I laughed at her childishness.

“Ma, you’re just exaggerating” I said.

She leaned back on her chair, and signaled me to turn on the AC.. which I did, she closed her eyes.

The nurse from earlier, came back in and carried the tray of food and drugs.

“It’s a good thing you’re here, Jasmine, we wouldn’t have been able to convince her to take her drugs” she said.

“Don’t worry, Vera, I’ll be coming around now and she won’t be able to skip her meds now” I said.

Ma Gloria sneakily opened her right eyes, but quickly shut it when she noticed we…(Vera and I) are staring at her.

We shook our heads and laughed.

“I should attend to the others” Vera said and left.

She sighed when she heard Vera shut the door, she adjusted herself on the chair.

“Ma, have you remembered anything about your past recently?” I asked.

“No” she murmured.

“Well, I have a suggestion…”

“No” she cut me off.

She opened her eyes and lifted herself off the chair, she climbed onto the bed.. she pulled the blanket over her head.

I inhaled deeply, she does this everytime I bring up the idea of helping her remember her past.

“You have to remember, you have the right to know what happened to you?”

Ma Gloria turned away from me and faced the wall, the blanket covering her head..but that didn’t stop me from talking.

“I think you should go to places that you’re familiar with, just try to think of any place you’ve been before, we…”

“There’s no need” she cut me off..

“There’s need, ma, you can’t just forget everything and… ”

“If my past was very important to me, I wouldn’t have forgotten it”

“But… ”

“.. since my memory doesn’t want to remember it, then I won’t force it” she said in a firm voice.

She shut her eyes and pretended as though she’s asleep…that’s to tell me she’s not ready to talk about this issue any more.

Like seriously, I don’t seem to understand ma Gloria sometimes.. why doesn’t she want to remember her past?

What if she has children and a husband that are missing her? What if something is happening in her family and…

The door burst open, Davis rushed in yelling.

“Gran-gran! Gran-gran! Gran-gran!”

Ma Gloria quickly sat up and broke into a very bright and wide smile, at the sound of Davis’s son.

“Awwwn, my sweet grandson!” She said.

Davis climbed onto the bed and jumped on her, making her fall back and rest her back on the headboard.

“Gran-gran, good afternoon!” Davis greeted and pinched her cheeks softly.

Ma Gloria laughed and rubbed her nose on his, like a mama bear does to her cub.

“My grandbaby is so filial.. unlike some people I know” she said and glared at me at the last part of her words.

She pinched Davis’s nose softly and kissed it.

I rolled my eyeballs and scoffed, she’s praising Davis today because he greeted her first.

“What did my grandbaby learned at school today?” She asked him.

“A lot of things!” He replied.

“Wow! Like what?”

Davis twisted his lips and frowned slightly, as if he’s trying to recall something.

“Conpum…conpum…”

He tapped his head lightly, while ma Gloria and i bite back our laugh.

“conpumter and deta!” He shouted when he finally remembered.

Ma Gloria and I burst into laughter, although we know what he meant…but his pronunciations are just so out of the world.

“Oh my goodness! My grandbaby is so smart!” Ma Gloria said.

“Yeah” Davis supported.

I frowned when I just recalled something.

“Wait.. Davis who brought you here?” I asked.

He can’t come here on his own, it’s gonna be either Thanatos or Adele brought him here.

“Uncle Tarna-do brought me”

Just as he said that, the door pushed open and Thanatos stepped in.

His eyes glanced around and they landed on Davis, he shook his head and smiled.

“Davis, you ran so fast!” He said.

“Thana…” I heard ma Gloria whispered beside me.

Did she just whispered Thanatos name? Or my ears misheard her?

I faced her and saw her staring at Thanatos, she seemed to be in a shocked state… As if she just saw a ghost.

Wait.. don’t tell me she knows him.

“M-mom?!”

My neck snapped towards Thanatos, I frowned.

“Mom?” I asked.

He didn’t reply me, he’s simply staring at her with a surprised and shocked expression.

My eyes moved between them as they continued staring at each other, then I saw a lone tear rushed down Thanatos eyes.

What’s going on?

“Ma?”

I nudged ma Gloria’s arm, but she didn’t look my way…her eyes remained on Thanatos.

Are they mother and son? Did she recognize Thanatos? But why doesn’t she look happy?

Thanatos took slow steps towards her, I quickly carried Davis off her laps.

He stopped by her bedside, he crouched down and he held her hands in his and studied her face.

“Mom…am I dreaming?” He asked.

Ma Gloria reached for his face, she caressed his cheeks softly and tears flowed down her cheeks.

“Thana…” She whispered again.

“Are you alive? Or I died and…” He couldn’t finish his words.

He threw his arms around her.. engulfing her in a tight hug.

Davis and I simply watched them, as if we’re watching some family reunion.

“You’re really alive! Mom, you’re really alive!” He chanted.

Ma Gloria grasped his shoulders and pushed him away from herself, Thanatos held her hands instead.

Her red teary eyes stared at Thanatos, she folded her lips in her mouth and her shoulders shake as she cries silently.

“How come you’re live? I saw them burying your body…how did you survive?”

I can tell ma Gloria is trying hard not to break down, though she’s shedding tears..but she’s holding herself back.

“I thought you’re dead, dad… ”

“Enough!” Ma Gloria cut him off.

Her eyes hardened at once, the vulnerable look in her eyes is suddenly gone.. and replaced with pain and bitterness.

“I think you’re making a mistake, I’m not your mother”

Thanatos paused, then frowned and took a second look at her.

“You’re mom, I know my mother and you’re her”

“I said I’m not, I don’t know you!”

Now it’s my turn to frown.

What does she mean? Didn’t she just whispered his name?

Now I get it, she’s been lying all these years.. she knows perfectly who she is.

“Mom… what are you talking about?”

“Stop calling me that! I’m not your mother!” She said in a hostile tone.

“Ma… ”

I swallowed my words when she turned to me with a very harsh glare, even Davis flinched on my laps and hugged me tightly.

“Jasmine, get him out of here!”

“Mom…”

Ma Gloria snatched the flower vase on the bedside table, she threw it across the room and it fell in a loud crash.

“I said I’m not your Mom! Just leave here and never come back!” She yelled.

Hold on… something is wrong.

Ma Gloria seem to be hiding something or hiding from something…

“Leave or I’ll kill myself!”

My eyes grew and I quickly covered Davis’s eyes, ma Gloria is holding a knife to her neck.

Thanatos quickly got up and stepped away from her, with his hands raising up in surrender.

“Fine! Fine! Drop the knife and I’ll leave… ”

“No! Get out!” She said firmly.

He nodded, he pulled me up and took slow steps towards the door.. not taking his eyes off her.

“Don’t ever come back here! I don’t ever wanna see you here!” Ma Gloria said.

Thanatos stopped by the door, he stared at her a few more seconds.. then opened the door and we stepped out.

When we’ve stepped out, I handed Davis to his father and look through the keyhole.

I saw ma Gloria taking that photo frame from underneath her bed, she wiped it and cried as she stared at it.. she’s crying bitterly.

“Let’s go” I told Thanatos.

He nodded wordlessly and followed me.

WHEN LOVE IS GONE: Chapter 41 – 50

“Where are we headed, Mr O’Briens?” Peter asked.

We’ve currently gotten out of the retirement home and we’re in Thanatos car.

“Home” I answered Peter.

“Yes, ma’am” he replied and started the car.

We (Thanatos and I) sat in a comfortable silence, while Davis is reading some letters from his book.

Thanatos seemed to be in his own thoughts, he must be wondering why ma Gloria denied knowing him.

And honestly, It’s obvious she knows him.. the question is, why is she lying?

“How long have you known her?” He asked quietly.

“Five years” I replied.

“Five years? You’ve being seeing my mother for five years now?”

“Yeah”

He inhaled deeply, nodded and stared out the window.

“I think she did that for a reason” I said.

He faced me.

“What reason? Isn’t it supposed to be a tremendous experience for us to be reunited?”

I stayed silent.

“15years… I have been thinking she’s dead for 15years, only for me to find out she’s alive today and got denied by her!”

He sounded pained when he’s speaking, which is understandable.

“Maybe she’s chased you away for your own good”

He scoffed.

“My own good? I don’t think so.. she’s just a coward and a selfish woman!”

I smacked the back of his head, he glared at me but didn’t retaliate.

“She’s your mother, show some respect.. what example are you showing your son”

His eyes moved to Davis, he reached forward and ruffled his hair.

“No mother would love to abandon her child, she must have a reason for doing this”

He didn’t speak.

“I studied her expression, it seems like she’s forced to do whatever she’s doing”

He looked me in the eyeballs, I nodded.

“What you should do now, is find out the reason she’s doing all this.. ok?”

He stared at me a few more moments and nodded.

“I also had the same thoughts” he said.

He took a glance at Davis, he leaned forward and pecked my lips when he realized Davis’s focused in his book.

“Thank you, baby, for keeping my mom company all these years”

“Well, I didn’t really know she’s your mom”

“Yeah…and you’ve done a great job”

He leaned forward and planted a lingering peck on my lips, but he pulled away before Davis would catch us.

“Thanks for being in my life” he said.

I blushed and looked away from him…I looked out the window.

I guess I’ve been indirectly playing my part as a daughter-in-law…such is life!
