HOUSE OF THORNS

Episode 3

Vivian was still sleeping soundly when her husband woke up to prepare for work the next day. He quickly fixed himself breakfast, had his bath and dressed up as quickly as he could.

He needed to be at work very early that day for an all important meeting with the CEO. Leonard knew just how important the new collaboration his company was seeking with their partners was, and being a key players in the advance team, he needed to brief the CEO on what they’ve down so far.

Miss Tricia, was known for her intelligence, humility and beauty, a rare combination in the business world. She had always interned with her father while she schooled, so as soon as she completed her studies in the UK, she resumed fully as her father’s second in command.

And for years, she had proven deserving of the respect and admiration her father had for her. Not only was she making bold steps in the business world, she was engraving the name of Mcmorrit Holdings in the sands of time.

So it was with outstretched hands that the employees and affiliates of Mcmorrit Holdings welcomed her when her father decided on an early retirement and announced her as the new CEO.

Although Tricia was just in her mid twenties, she knew just what to do to make all who worked with her be on their toes when she needed to, their age and social status notwithstanding. Her love for excellence made her find it difficult to work with people who largely had nothing to bring to the table.

And for those who knew just what to do, she ensured they understood the importance of timeliness in the course of discharging their duties. She never down played motivation for staff members who were exceptional.

“Good morning ma’am” Leonard greeted curtly as he took his seat opposite her. “Good morning Mr. Leonard. It’s good to see you” she responded warmly as she brought out one of the files she had been working on before he got in.

“The floor is yours Mr. Leonard” she told him, her delicate and perfectly manicured fingers hovering on the keyboard of her laptop, waiting for him to begin.

“Ok so, we have so far made the initial contact with Larrabet Holdings, and we have been able to get to the top 5 contenders for the alliance.

The other four contenders I must say are not babies in the industry, but I’ve somehow been able to identify the edge we have over them all” Leonard began.

“Go on please” she urged him on while she made notes on the slides she was going through. Leonard was just too efficient and reliable; he knew just how to make things easier for himself and for the people he worked for.

Last night, he knew that he needed to have this conversation with the CEO this early, so he had taken his time to prepare a presentation that’d make the time they spent talking about what has been done and what must be done brief, giving them ample time to do what had to be done.

“So, from what you have now on the third slide, I hope you understand perfectly how I intend to make Larrabet Holdings come crawling after us.

All we’re waiting for is your nod of approval and we kick the stone rolling immediately” he said smiling happily.

“You smile so graciously at every presentation, making it appear as if the good looks is all you have to offer, even when you know just how to make your messages hit the right spot. Thanks for choosing to stay with Mcmorrit Holdings mr. Leonard” she told him with a smile so bright.

“You’re welcome ma’am. I’m just doing my job. Besides, I love it here, having to work in an environment so peaceful and still manage to have successful and intelligent colleagues all around” he told her, smiling still.

Their meeting came to an abrupt end because Leonard started fidgeting uncomfortably as he kept peeking at his phone while he spoke with her. “I’m sorry ma’am, but I need to run now.

I’ll send in the step by step explanation of our action plan as soon as you’re done evaluating the files I sent to your mail” he told her and got up almost immediately, only waiting for a few seconds to see her reluctantly nod her head, confusion written all over her face.

“Hey baby, calm down, would you?” Leonard said into his phone receiver the moment he got into his office.

He had been running like a man whose house was on fire after he left the CEO’s office. And yeah, his house was on fire! His wife was turning into a strange being under his watch.

“Don’t you dare tell me to calm down you lying bst@rd. I h@te you now like I’ve never h@ted anything before in my life” she fumed on the other hand end of the phone.

“Now, you’re getting me upset baby. Where did you learn to cur$e so badly?” he said, trying so hard to restrain himself from telling her just how disappointed he was with her behaviour.

“Oh, you’re going to get upset now? Wow! How convenient for you to try to twist things when you know clearly what you’re doing is wrong.

How dare you say you’re going to be upset when you know how badly you’ve been and you’re still hurting me?” she fired back in an angrier tone.

“See baby, I’ve been trying to see what exactly is wrong here, but I haven’t been able to pin point it.

Last night, you got yourself so drunk, I had a hard time getting you to sleep, throwing aside all the insults you hurled at me.

I was hoping to have you sober and in a better shape this morning. Why does it seem like it wasn’t the alcohol speaking last night? Why are you sounding so offended?” he asked feeling very dejected.

“Go on Leonard, act like you don’t know what I’m talking about. But I knew you were going to be with her even before I called you. I knew you were going to decline my calls even before I called.

Now did it happen or not? Since when did you start resuming so early at Mcmorrit? Why didn’t you just pass the night there with her? She’s the boss after all” she accused him.

Leonard’s heart broke in a thousand pieces. What did she mean by what she had just said? She had so carelessly accused him of having an affair with someone he hadn’t had any thought of, someone he had never had a moment to talk with other than their business proposal deliberations.

“Look Vivian, this is the worst I’ve heard from you since I met you. I’m going to act like I didn’t hear you, and hope that you won’t make such hurting insinuations ever again” Leonard told his wife unhappily.

“You think this is the worst?” she asked and let out a cynical laughter. “Its not my darling. It’s only the beginning of what I intend to do to you. I’m going to make you pay for cheating so irresponsibly” she told him lackadaisically.

“You know what Vivian, I’m going to hang up now. I’ll see you when I get home. I’m sure we’d be able to sort out whatever differences you’re trying to build up in between us.” He told her, still doing his best to keep himself from showing the rage that was burning deep inside him.

“If you think I’m going to allow you come anywhere close to me, if you think this is going to be like last night when you crawled into my bed to shut me up, then you have another thinking coming your way.

The only sorting out you’d be needing is to let that cr@zy girl know you’re married” she shouted on top of her voice before hanging up.

“Holy cow! Is this my wife? Is this the woman I married? What’s going on with my woman? Could it be the pregnancy hormones? God! How am I supposed to make her see that she’s the only one I see as a woman right now?” he asked several questions in anguish.

He sat on his chair, his head resting on his desk as he tried to figure out what could have made her assess so certainly that he had anything to do with the CEO.
