THE CONGRUENCE 13 – 17

Sister Grace was beginning to worry about me; she would call and start her sermons and pep talks…encouraging me not to lose focus of what I went to school for. I had to ask why this was becoming the new norm anytime we talked on the phone…her reasons: instead of me asking them for money at home,

I was the one sending money to them. I even gave my brothers a huge sum of money to tastefully renovate their barber shop. I was also not visiting home as often as I used to, neither was I available for them to visit. She said her mind was troubled and she just wanted to be sure I was not getting involved in anything that could become a problem in the future. I attributed the financial buoyancy to Deola’s kindness and claimed that my workload at school had increased which made it difficult to spare time to visit them. I told her severally to put her mind at ease and that I would never put my academics at risk for any reason.

Not long after that, our lecturers decided to embark on an indefinite strike action…following the Federal Government’s failure to fulfill an agreement they had. We thought it wouldn’t take long, so students stayed put until the non-academic staff joined in the strike and students were told to leave campus.

My sister was already calling to know when I would come home…Captain didn’t want me to go because we wouldn’t be seeing each other regularly. He wanted me to move into his guest house…but I wasn’t sure I wanted to do that. It looked like a big step and I wasn’t really ready for that. Deola later informed me we didn’t have to leave Campus because we were not living in the hostel.
“But what do I tell my folks? They are already asking when I’m coming home”
“I think I can handle that” Deola responded
She picked up her phone and called my mum…she presented the case like she wanted to know if my mum would agree to an opportunity that came up, because I already said she wouldn’t.
