Chapter Forty Eight

The man was still confused. He had been a kller for so many years so he understood what comes after those words.
“I know you want to badly hurt me but please. Don’t kll me, I did it to save me family” he said.

Kelvin furrowed his eyebrows and leaned forward.
“You say what?” He asked.

“You heard me, he held my family captive and told me to kll that poor couple. They were so sweet and innocent but there was nothing I could do. My wife was pregnant and I couldn’t let her die or lose our child because of my foolishness. So.. I did it and klled them. I cru$hed them both” he said.

Kelvin shook his head and sighed deeply.
“Who sent you?” He asked calmly. The man acted like he didn’t hear him.

“Huh?” He asked.

“I said who fking send you?!!” He yelled, banging his two hands on the table.

The man shook in fear and started panting really hard. He was already scared of Kelvin, his face, expression, voice. Everything about Kelvin scares him already.

“His name… I can’t remember but..”

“You have ten seconds to remember his name or I’ll chop off your fingers one after the other” he threatened and brought out a very sharp knlfe.

“I told you I can’t remember his name… It’s been over ten years”

“Ten…nine.. eight, think about it or your fingers will be bye bye..”

“Uh.. his name…his name.. his name” the man tried to remember.

“Seven, six, five, four…”

“Please wait, I’m trying to remember…” He said, squeezed his palms. He didn’t want his fingers chopped off.

“Three, two…”

“Mars!” He said quickly before Kelvin could say the last number. Kelvin placed the knife gently on the table and stepped away from him.

“Mars? Where can I find him?” He asked.

“I don’t know. The last time I saw him, he was arrested” he said.

“You won’t leave from here till I find Mars. Till then…” Kelvin said and turned to leave.

“I don’t care if you keep me locked here for many years but please, my family” he said.

Kelvin smirked and left, leaving the man behind in the house.
He got into his car and slammed the door hard.
“Mars?” He mentioned the name again. Suddenly, he brought out his phone and called his investigator.

“I’m going to send you some money right now. Give it to Tim’s family and tell them that’s it’s from him. He would not be in the town for some days”

“Yes sir!” He said.

“And yes… Look into Mars for me” Kelvin said.

“Okay? Mars what?” He asked. Kelvin frowned.

“Just Mars!” He said angrily.

“Yes sir!” He said and disconnected the call.

Kelvin transferred the money to him and drove back home.
He stopped by the club to have some drink. He still couldn’t get what his brother said off his mind.
He wanted to drink till he is able to forget those words his brother said.

“Propose to Erica” he said and gave a quick laugh.

“Very funny…”
“Kelvin isn’t home yet” Ava said to Erica who was on her phone.

“Yeah, he isn’t” she replied and switched off the phone.

“Baby…” She heard from behind.
She saw Calvin walking down the stairs.

“Yeah?” She asked.

“Why aren’t you two asleep?” He asked.

“We are waiting for…”

“Pizza.. yeah, pizza. We ordered pizza and we wanted to eat some before we go to bed” Ava interrupted Erica. Erica herself was confused. She had no idea why Ava had to lie to Calvin but she was sure she had her reasons.

“I could join you two, you know?” He asked, smiling.

“Oh no, it’s a girls thing. You have an important meeting with your father tomorrow and you really need to go and rest now so that you can leave early” Ava reminded him.

“Oh yeah, sleep early. Thanks Ava, you two have a great time” he said and left.

“Why did you lie to him?” Erica murmured.

“What the fk?! Jeez! Were you about to tell the truth right now?” Ava asked.

“Of course, there’s no big deal in telling him the truth”

“You don’t understand anything Erica. Just…”

Kelvin suddenly walked into the house in a drunken state. They didn’t notice it quickly.
Ava sprung up and stared at Erica.

“Remember, just ask him slowly okay?” She said and Erica nodded.
“Bye!” She added and quickly left.

“Hey Kelvin…” She greeted as she passed him by but no response came from him.

She didn’t care. She knew that was just his character but no, it was because he was drunk.

Kelvin closed the door behind and staggeredly walked to his room but Erica blocked his path.

“Kelvin… I need to speak to you about something” she said.

“Move out of my way, I don’t want to hurt you” he said, swaying his hand for her to move out of the way. Erica didn’t listen, she leaned forward closer to him and pulled his arm.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” She asked.

He turned his head and stared at her.
“Tell you what?” He asked. That was when she knew that he was drunk.

She opened her mouth in surprise and moved back away from him.
“Are you drunk?” She asked.

“Yeah, I am. What are you gonna do about it?” He asked.

“Nothing… Just… Wanted to ask why you kept that secret away from me?” She asked.

“What sh!t are you talking about? Let go of me..” he said and freed herself from her grip. He walked away from her and headed towards the stairs.

“Why didn’t you tell me you love me?” She asked.

He stopped and turned back to stare at her.
“What do you mean?” He asked.

“You had feelings for me and didn’t tell me. Why?” Erica asked.

Kelvin smirked and stared at Erica.
“What make you think I have feelings for you? My brother does, not me” he said.

Erica scoffed.
“There you go, trying to hide that emotions of yours. If you don’t let it out, it could ruin millions of things. Now I understand why you kssed me. I was starting to like you at first but I now see you clearly”

“What the fk are you talking about?” He asked again. She smirked and walked closer to him. Their bodies were rubbing against each other.

“You’re jealous..” she said almost in a whisper.

He smirked and stared down at her.
“What makes you think I’m jealous?” He asked.

“I don’t know. That’s your problem” she replied.

“Okay… I don’t want to talk to you right now. I’m fking drunk, so get out of my way” he said.

Erica grabbed his hand and tightened her grip.
“If you don’t love me, leave without touching me” she said.

“Are you threatening me?” He asked.

“Call it any sh!t you want to call it” she said, still holding his hand.

Kelvin thought about his brother and his proposal to her. He really wanted to kss her and hug her so badly but what could he do. She’s going to be his brother’s fiancee soon.

Kelvin slipped his hand from hers and stepped back.
“I’m sorry, I don’t love you” he said and walked away.

A weird smile crept on Erica’s face.
“I knew it…” She murmured.
Kelvin got into his room and slammed the door hard. He reached his bed and angrily threw his pillows away. He threw everything on his table away. He spent the whole night scattering his room.

He grabbed a bottle of whiskey and head to the balcony. He brought out his ¢igarette box and lit a stick.

Kelvin left for the office quite early. He received a call from his investigator about Mars.

“What news do you have for me?” He asked as he sat on his twirling office chair.

“Mars is dead master. According to my investigation, someone klled him. The station caught fire but it was an attempted not an accident. The real culprit tried to kll Mars just to hide his secret” he said.

“So, you are saying Mars isn’t the real culprit?” Kelvin asked.

“Yes boss, he was assigned to do the work just like the truck driver” he said.

“Just keep finding more about the real culprit. I’ll do my own findings” Kelvin said and disconnected the call.
His mind went back to Erica. He remembered everything that happened last night even if he was drunk.

He sighed and shook the thought out of his head and went back to work.
Ava was waiting in the house for Calvin. She sneakily entered into Erica’s room and met her at the balcony.

“Erica?” She called out.

Erica turned and stared at Ava.
“Hey” she said with a crack voice.

Ava drew closer to her.
“What happened? You are not looking too well” she said.

“I’m fine” she replied, trying not to cry. She didn’t understand why those words Kelvin said to her last night hurt her like fire.

“Did you ask…”

“Yeah, I did and I regret that sh!t big time. He doesn’t love me Ava. Even if he does, it’s all fake” Erica replied and diverted her gaze from Ava.

Ava shook her head.
“That’s not true, I’m sure he…”

“No Ava, no! I don’t want anything to do with him anymore and I don’t care if the love he has for me is real or fake” she interrupted Ava and left into the bathroom.

Ava sighed deeply. She was sure about what she had in mind.

“I need to figure out why he’s not telling her all this” she murmured and left her room.
