WHITE! THE COLOR OF YOUR HEART: Chapter 1-10

WHITE!!!; The color of your heart?????????????

(A wall flower’s guide to finding God.)

Chapter 5
(The Ilerioluwa way of finding friends….)

I sat down in my favorite reading spot next to Sean, still relishing my proclaimed victory over him. I grabbed my phone to change the song I was listening to, when a message from Feyikemi popped in. I clicked on it.

‘BABE!!! WHERE ARE YOU?! DON’T TELL ME YOU WENT TO THAT YOUR READING SPOT AGAIN!! DON’T YOU KNOW WHAT TODAY’S DATE IS?’

I rolled my eyes at her message.

There was a very sinister story behind this particular lecture hall.

It was a story about a ghost town haunted this hall every night.

Apparently, the story went that years ago, when the University was first established, a female student came here for night class, but along the line she fell asleep, and when her friends tried to wake her, they realized that she was dead, and had died in her sleep.

So the legend went that anytime you come for night class here, if you take a good look around once you arrive, there will always be one person sleeping at the corner of the hall. The story warned students against trying to wake this person, even if they were still asleep when you were leaving the hall to go home, as it was believed that it wasn’t a human being, but the ghost of the girl that had died.

On no account was anyone to try and wake her up.

And it was said that on the night she died, which just happened to be tonight, students should avoid this lecture hall entirely, as anyone she catches there for night class, she would drag the person to h*ell along with her.

I hissed at Feyikemi’s sad attempts to scare me. Feyikemi loved scary stories and h0rror movies, and she always looked for any opportunity to scare me, as she knew I was a scaredy cat.

This story about the sleeping girl was very popular on this side of campus, and many students and even lecturers believed it, it had somehow become a part of our University history.

But as for me, Feyikemi’s plan wouldn’t work this time. I was already used to this hall, and nothing could scare me out of it.

I dropped my phone and scanned the hall, shaking my head.

My blood froze however, as I noticed one person sleeping at the corner of the hall, far at the back. I squinted my eyes to see if it was a boy or a girl, but I couldn’t quite make out who the person was.

No way.

This had to be a coincidence though right?

No way that on the supposed night this girl died, would na be the only time I would ever notice one person sleeping in the hall.

I laughed nervously.

Ileri, stop scaring yourself.

I forced my eyes away from the sleeping person, and tried to concentrate on my books.

A few hours passed, and I began to feel sleepy. I yawnes and stretched my arms, earning a hiss from the boy beside me.

I ignored him.

I glanced around the hall, and realized that Sean and I were the only ones left.

Wow. When did everyone leave?

I turned to the far back of the hall and my heart almost burst out of my chest.

That sleeping person was still there!!

And still sleeping!!!

God God God.

All my rationale and logical thinking went out the window.

Ah, God will punish this Feyikemi girl oh, for even putting the thought in my head in the first place.

I quickly glanced at the time, trying not to take my eyes off the mysterious sleeping person that eas driving my cr@zy.

It was three am in the morning.

All of a sudden, the lights in the hall went out, and so did the common sense part of my brain.

I screamed like a baby.

“Are you insane?!” Sean yelled from beside me, but I was too scared to even answer him.

“Torch! Torch! Bring your flashlight!” I yelled frantically as I yanked his phone out of his hands, switched on the flashlight, and pointed it in the direction of the sleeping person.

“Your own phone is beside you!” He protested, trying to grab his phone out of my hands.

I, on the other hand, had almost peed my pants.

The sleeping person was no longer there.

I began to lose my mind, or had I already lost it?

“S-Sean, where is the person that was sleeping there?”

“What? What are you talking ab….”

“The ghost!! The sleeping ghost!! Where is she?!”

“Why are you asking me?! My God Ileri, are you sure you shouldn’t go back to the mental hospital you obviously escaped from?!”

I grabbed his shirt.

“Sean! We’re both going to die!”

“No way! If anyone’s dying here it’s you! Ow! Stop squeezing my shirt like that!”

I began to scream again, and Sean grabbed my head, pulling me closer to him and slapping his hand on my mouth.

“Shut up, you idiot.” He muttered firmly, and I suddenly became aware of how close I was to him.

My head cleared and my senses returned as I struggled to breathe from under his palms.

He seemed to notice our close proximity too, as his irritated expression began to soften just a tiny bit.

The lights suddenly came on and we both looked up.

I heaved a sigh of relief, then turned to look back in sleeping person’s direction, and saw a girl coming out of the toilet and going to sit down at that seat, then putting her head down to sleep.

Oh my God.

She had been in the toilet the whole time.

I suddenly felt very stupid.

“Ah hem.” I heard Sean’s voice from behind me and turned again, realizing that I was still gripping his shirt tightly.

“I-I’m sorry!” I stammered, hoping the ground would open up and swallow me.

God.

This had to be one of my stupidest moves ever.

Sean folded his arms.

“Care to explain what that was all about? Or did you just display your daily five minutes madness?”

I bit my lip. No way was I about to tell him that I had just acted like a lunatic because I was scared.

“N-none of your business!” I stuttered awkwardly, feeling like slamming my head on the wall.

“A-and, what gave you the right to touch my face l-like that?!” I yelled again, trying to change the subject.

“Are you kidding me? If I hadn’t shut you up your screaming would’ve probably brought the security guards here!” He huffed at me.

I blinked at him helplessly, not knowing what argument to make again.

“Whatever.” I said stubbornly.

“God. You’re such a child Ilerioluwa.” He spat out.

I faced him.

My name sounded weird coming from his mouth.

He caught me staring at him.

“What? Are you going to display madness again?”

I rolled my eyes.

“Sorry sha. For screaming and pulling your shirt.”

He brought his face closer to mine.

“Whatever.”

I hissed.

“And you’re calling me the child.”

He ignored me and put his earphones back in, while I lay my head on the desk, sulking.

This was the third consecutive time I had embarrassed myself in front of this boy.

To be honest, if it were Tobi or any other boy, I would have probably given up the ghost by now in embarrassment.

But Sean was different.

Maybe it was because he had been rude to me when I first met him, or because I had embarrassed myself so many times around him that I was now resistant to shame, but I felt comfortable around him. It felt like he wasn’t much of a boy to me.

I turned my head to the side and took in his features.

He was still, undeniably handsome, but his attractiveness didn’t make me feel anxious or nervous.

“Are you trying to memorize my face so that you can take it back to your wtchcraft coven and place a curse on me?” He asked sarcastically.

I scoffed.

“You’re a big mumu, Sean.”

“It takes a mumu to know a mumu.”

It was weird though, conversing freely with a boy like this, no stuttering, no anxiety, just me being myself.

It was a first, and it felt good.
