Chapter Sixty Seven

GRACE POV

My mind was occupied as Mr Lucas drove us to school the next day. I was thinking about Dylan, I was worried about him.

Oh Geez! He is gonna die soon… How will I feel about that? How am I going to take it? No, God forbids that. He isn’t gonna die, he is going to live. That doctor is lying, those results are fake.

Bowing head a little, I prayed. “Dear Lord, king of heaven, take care of Dylan, nurse him back to heath. Strengthen him. Give him the power to destroy every obstacles hindering his path to good heath. Grant his heart desires, bless him, shower him with your divine blessings. Grant him long life and prosperity. In Jesus name I’ve prayed. Amen”.

I can’t count the times have been praying since yesterday. Last night I couldn’t even sleep, I kept praying, hoping God answers my prayers and restore him back to health. I was dmn worried. I wanted him to be safe, in good health, I didn’t want any tragedy to take place.

Rubbing my forehead to relieve me of the headache have been feeling for an hour, I mumbled out few words. “Dylan be fine, I might die if you die…please”.

Dave stared at me. He have been chatting with Vanessa before we even got into the car, they are in a relationship, he told me days ago and I feel happy for them.

“Grace, are you crying?”.He looked surprised.

“Uh..no. Am not crying”.I chuckled nervously.

“But their are tears in your….”.

I touched my eyes immediately and just then the hot tears have been trying to hold spill out and rolled on my cheeks, dropping on my neck.

“You are crying!”.He gasped.

“Um, something got into my eyes. It’s nothing”.I chuckled again, trying to make him stop worrying but he didn’t.

“If something got into your eyes you should be worried about it, It could cause blindness you know”. He drew me closer to himself and blew air into my eyes but I gently pushed him away.

“Leave it Dave, it’s gone. Thanks”.I breathed out turning to face the window in order to avoid his querying eyes.

Am changing, I know it. I now lie too much and sometimes I prefer being alone than being in public.

The car halted at school and I stepped out before going to class. I saw Angela and Jeanann talking when I got in and I gasped, walking to them.

“What’s going on here?”.It was surprising to see both girls talking. Yeah I know Jeanann went to apologize to Angela yesterday but they can’t be talking so soon, right?

“Hey Grace”.It was Jeanann speaking. What the…!

“Grace, thank God ya here. I and Jeanann have been talking about our upcoming exam and our preparations for it. I hope the questions wouldn’t be that difficult”.This time Angela spoke.

And Jeanann cut in. “I wish the answers will stunk into our head like glue. I wanna pass, who don’t wanna?”.

They both laughed while I remained standing, staring shockingly at them. Jeanann noticed this and sighed.

“Look Grace, I know you are surprised seeing I and Angela talking but she forgave me this morning. I was surprised too. She told me that she would think about it yesterday and she gave me her answer today. Despite taking her forgiveness, I want yours too. I don’t want you to hate me. Forget about the past and concentrate on the present. Human makes mistakes which are bound to be forgiven, so then I want your forgiveness. Please, don’t hate me”.She said pleadingly but before I could talk, Angela spoke.

“Yes Grace. Forgive her, she is sorry, that’s all that matters. She had wronged me, I know but still I forgave her because to error is human but to forgive is divine”.

“Fine. I already forgave her, I only wanted her to seek for your forgiveness first”.

“Oh thank you Grace”.Jeanann smiled and I shrugged before sitting on the seat.

Hours passed and the bell rang during lunch hour, Angela and Jeanann went to the cafeteria after I bluntly told them ‘no’ that I wouldn’t join them.

I went to Dylan and sat on his desk, facing him.

“Hi Grace, how was your night?”.He asked and I shrugged.

“It was fine”.Tears cloaked my throat and I coughed, trying hard not to break down.

The sight of him wanna make me cry, knowing he has less than eight days to live. I was hoping for a miracle, a urgent one and I wish it comes really fast cause I don’t want anything bad to happen to Dylan.

“Had their been any changes?”.I asked, trying to make my voice come out normal not croaky or low.

“Don’t worry about me, Grace. Am going to be fine, trust me”.He had a reassuring look on his face but it looked fake and forced.

I knew he didn’t believe he was going to be fine himself but he was just lying to me so that I wouldn’t think too much of his condition.

“I trust you Dylan but….”.

“No buts and you should go join the rest in the cafeteria. Stop giving a no response if they ask you to because of me”.

I frowned slightly. “How can I leave you here alone? Am not that bad, you might feel lonely and now in your present condition I will never leave your side…in school”.

“Aw… You just sounded like my mom”.He laughed.

“Your mum must be caring”.

“She was”.He sighed and tapped his fingers on the desk as if recalling something.

“Dylan… Um, can I ask a question?”.

“Sure, ask”.

“Sorry, your parents.. What happened to them?”.

His eyes darkened immediately.

“I shouldn’t have asked, sor…”.

“Duncan killed them!”.

I gasped. “Your uncle? Why would he kill his own brother and sister in-law?”.

“Jealousy is a bch, it can make a sheep turn into a goat”.

“Am confus….”.

“Duncan was jealous of his brother. My father was wealthy, own lots of cars, companies, cash while Duncan was just a jobless man who lived under my father’s care. He was very lazy, into drugs, had gangs, in short he was a disappointment to the Lockwood’s Family. My dad made sure he was employed in his company but Duncan was always kicked out because he always do fraud the company or because he was ignorant of a company dealings. He was an uneducated moron, an illiterate who dropped out of highschool at seventeen. Apparently Duncan hated my dad, he thought my father always kick him out of his companies because my dad hated him. He wanted to be rich too, so he hacked one of my father’s saving account and he took all the money.

After several investigations he was known to be the culprit. My dad arrested him but after lots of pleadings from my mum, my dad bailed him out but Duncan already hated my dad more than before. One night, he came into my home and killed my parents, he vowed to kill everyone of us but luckily I escaped that night and here I am alive with him searching for me, promising to kill everyone I love”.

“What?! That man is the devil himself!”.I spat out.

“He is indeed”.He frowned. “But now Grace darling, go meet your friends in the cafeteria. Go spend some time with them”.

I blushed at the darling he said but I waved it off.

“No, am going nowhere. I will be here with you”.

“Don’t be so stubborn”.He rolled his eyes and just then he gasped and let out a dry cough, clunging his chest wide eyed.

“D..Dylan, are you okay?”.I asked scared as I glanced at him.

He wanted to speak but suddenly blood rolled out of his mouth, dropping on the floor.

“Dylan!!”.I almost screamed as I watched more dark blood come out of his mouth. I was about to hold him when he smiled and remove his hand from his chest.

“Am fine”.Was all he said as he spat the remaining blood in his mouth on the floor.

“You are fine? How can you say that? You aren’t fine, no you aren’t fine. Please Dylan we have to do something about this, am scared… I don’t want anything bad to happen to you”.

“Look at me Grace”.I stared at him with teary eyes. “Nothing would happen to me. Am fine, am going to be fine, Doctor Scott said it and you should believe him”.

“I can’t believe him Dylan, I just can’t”.

“Jesus Grace!”.Someone yelled and I turned to the door only to see an angry and shocked looking Kyree walking into the classroom.

I wanted to quickly move away from Dylan but my feet didn’t agree with my decision. I mean… What’s wrong with having a conversation with Dylan?

“Grace, you’re talking to this…guy?”.It was obvious he wanted to call Dylan names but he didn’t probably say it because he was afraid of Dylan.

“Huh? What’s wrong with that?”.I fired.

“Everything is wrong with that, Grace!”.Kyree seem shocked by my response. “He is dangerous!”.

“So what?”.I was getting angry. “So what if he is dangerous? I hate this words you guys pour on Dylan. He is human but you guys treat him like some beasts.. You avoid him when he needs someone with the thought of him being dangerous!”.

“You like him, don’t you?”.His eyes was getting teary.

“Yes, I like him as a friend and oh, I don’t love you. I can never love you… Stick that into your brain!”.

“A…am sorry”.He sniffed and left the class in a hurry.

I sighed and stare down at the floor, realizing I spoke harshly to Kyree. I should have spoken…nicely but he would come over it, right?

“Wow”.Dylan look surprised. “You defended me”.

“Because you’re my friend and friends support each other”.

The sound of friend in my mouth sounded horrible. Truly, I wanted us to be more than friends.

HER ADVERSITY: Chapter 61 – The End

I was in the car, my eyes glancing at the streets as I tried to push away the thoughts of Dylan and Kyree.

I felt bad about how I spoke to Kyree. He is my friend but he isn’t supposed to love me, right? I don’t feel comfortable with his love confession and all, it angers me.

Suddenly a car parked roughly in front of ours and men in black came out with guns in their hands.

We were in a kind of deserted area…

Before I could process anything, I heard;

“Grace, come out!”.My thoughts got confirmed when I realized they were Duncan’s boys… Oh God!

“Dave, what are we gonna do?”.I whispered to my brother, feeling so scared.

“Don’t worry, am calling 911”.

I glanced at him and noticed he was dialing an emergency number.

But it seemed like if my delay annoyed the men because they pointed a gun to my window and ordered me to unlock the door.

Having no choice, I unlocked it and they pulled me away pointing guns at Dave and Mr Lucas who they dragged out of the car pointing guns to their body as they laid on the ground.

“Bch!”.I heard one of the men say and suddenly a cold metal hit my head and I lost consciousness, dropping to the cold hard ground.
