HIDDEN WIFE : CHAPTER 51 – 60
Chapter 55

RACHEL’S pov
My legs were feeling a little bit stiff, and I couldn’t alight the car like everyone else -I guess it’s because I’ve been sitting on the same spot for two hours.
Thankfully we’ve made it to the cemetery, else I don’t think I’ll be able to use my legs anymore.
“Come here, let me give you a hand” nanny Pamela said as she collected my handbag, though it’s a small handbag.
“Is her grave far from here?” I asked, since Fatima stopped our car by the gate.
“No, it’s just a stone throw” Fatima said, but I glared at her doubtfully.
I’ll never believe a word she’s gonna say until my baby’s born, her words always gives me hypertension.
“Nanny, is it far from here?” I asked nanny Pamela instead.
“No” she answered, and Fatima gave me the ‘I told ya’ look, which I scoffed at. “That’s her” nanny Pamela pointed at a grave about ten feet away.
“Oh” I smiled. “That’s very close”
“Lazy@ss” I heard Fatima muttered, but as the matured grown-up woman that I am, I decided to ignored her.
HIDDEN WIFE : CHAPTER 51 – 60
“Longest time, Amelia” nanny Pamela said as she smiled at Duncan’s mom’s tombstone.
Now I believe what Duncan once told me about taking his mother’s last name, because the words written on her tombstone are;
BELOVED MOTHER, SISTER AND DAUGHTER, AMELIA BALDWIN, 1978 – 2012.
Her tombstone is the dirtiest here, with a withered bouquet of daisies laying on her grave which I’m guessing Duncan put here last time he came to visit her, and from the look of things that must be a very long time already.
Nanny Pamela suddenly threw an arm around my shoulder, pulling me close and reached for my hand with her free hand.
“Look who I brought to see you, your son’s wife, isn’t she beautiful?”
I smiled at her nanny Pamela’s introduction, I’m feeling kinda nervous even though Ms Baldwin isn’t standing in front of me physically, maybe my nervousness is because I have it imprinted in my head that I’m standing before my mother-in-law -i’m kinda hoping she’d approve of me, and accept me as her daughter-in-law.
Nanny Pamela chuckled lightly.
“I know you must be saying she isn’t as beautiful as you back in the day, but she certainly isn’t lagging behind either, right?” she asked rhetorically.
My eyes zeroed on the small photo of Ms Baldwin pasted on the tombstone, and true to nanny Pamela’s boastful words, she (Ms Baldwin) was certainly a beauty when she was alive, because even her photo is making me doubt my beauty.
It’s very obvious my husband inherited her beautiful face, I pray my kids would inherit their good genes too.
“Your daughter-in-law has some good news to tell you” she faced me, and nodded towards the tombstone. “Go on” she urged me.
I crouched down and pvshed the withered daisies away, then carefully placed the fresh ones I bought in the same spot.
“Hello, Ms Baldwin, I’m Duncan’s wife, Rachel”
I paused.
“I’m sorry for not coming earlier to introduce myself to you, it’s because there’s been a lot of things going on in our lives all these years, and we didn’t have time to do the most important things”
The important things I meant here are, paying her visits and introducing myself to her.
I shivered as a strange, cold breeze suddenly blew past me, and it gave me an eerie feeling but I brushed it off as nothing since we’re in a graveyard.
“Please permit me to call you mom, can I?” I asked.
Yeah, I know she can’t respond to me, but I’m just asking for courtesy’s sake.
I heard Fatima and Nanny Pamela laugh shortly at my question.
“Mom, you’re gonna be a grandma soon” I grinned. “Duncan and I are expecting a baby”
I paused as if I’m giving her some time to rejoice over the news.
“I know Duncan’s being a bad son lately and haven’t been coming to see you, but don’t worry, I’m gonna make you for his sins and I’ll be sure to visit you every month”
My eyes and mind must have played some tricks on me, because I saw Ms Baldwin smile inside her photo -weird imagination.
“Come on, let’s head home” Fatima whispered in my ear, as she showed me her wristwatch.
Damn Duncan for giving us limited time, I’d have love to spend more time with his mom.
I nodded anyway, and got up.
“Don’t worry, Amelia, I’ll take good care of them for you” nanny Pamela said, then turned around and headed towards our car.

Lucas glanced at his wristwatch once more, and turned towards Mr Baldwin.
“Sir, we’ve been waiting for three hours”
“Hm” Mr Baldwin grunted in response.
“Should we reschedule? Or continue waiting?”
Mr Baldwin checked his phone, he sighed.
“Ferrari wouldn’t fail to show up without a reason after making an appointment, contact his PA again” he said.
“Yes, sir” Lucas replied as he fetched his phone.
He dialed a number on his phone, then waited for someone to pick as it started ringing, but his call went to voicemail. He tried a few more times, but all his calls went straight to voicemail.
“Sir, there’s no answer”
Mr Baldwin narrowed his eyes for a moment, then pushed the door open and alighted the car.
“Sir?”
“I’ll go inside, and wait for thirty minutes, then we’ll leave if he still doesn’t show up” he said, and headed towards the entrance door before Lucas could say anything else.

RACHEL’S pov.
My stomach growled quietly, and I quickly searched my bag for a chocolate cake and started eating.
“Eating sweet is bad for you given your current condition” Nanny Pamela said, with her eyes fixed on my stomach and I pouted.
“Like seriously, I’m starting to hate being pregnant”
Nanny Pamela raised her eyebrows at me.
“Being pregnant prevents me from eating so many things”
She laughed at my sulky expression, thankfully Fatima’s driving else she’d have continued in this laughter. Then there’s a very brief moment of silence which I broke.
“I’m curious, nanny” I said.
“Curious about me?” I nodded. “What are you curious about?” she asked.
“Your story”
“My story?”
“Yeah. Like, what’s relationship with Duncan’s family? How did you get to know Duncan’s mom?” I asked, my curiosity was clearly showing in my eyes.
The smile on Nanny Pamela’s face wiped off, she stared blankly at me for a moment, before averting her gaze and looked out the window with her jaw tightly clenched.
It seemed like she’s contemplating on wether to tell me about it, or not.
I stayed silent, and patiently waited for her decision -you know, I can’t really force her to speak.
“Amelia is my younger sister” she said, after a moment of silence.
My eyes widened immediately she said those words.
Younger sister? Nanny Pamela is actually Duncan’s aunt?
Now, I didn’t see that coming at all.
“Does Duncan know you’re his aunt” I couldn’t help but blurt out.
She shook her head.
“No, because I ran away from home when I was eighteen years old, and my father disowned me and banned everyone from talking about me, or even mentioning my name at home”
That’s kinda cruel, but why would her father disown her, and even ban everyone from talking about her?
Don’t tell me Nanny Pamela was a bad@ss teenager, because she doesn’t look like she was a rascal in her teens.
“Our father was a dictator and the whole family was afraid of him, nobody wanted to get on his bad side”
“Oh”
I hate dictators more than everything else in this world, they think you’re not even worthy of leading your own life.
“He wanted to force me into marrying an old business tycoon, I was eighteen and he wanted me to marry a sixty-seven years old man”
“What?!” I exclaimed.
Ok.. that’s just sick of him.
I would’ve burst into laughter if it wasn’t for the atmosphere around us right now, like an eighteen years old and a sixty-seven years old? That’s just absurd.
“Yes, that’s why I ran away from home”
“Hmm, well, I guess you did the right thing”
She shrugged.
“Then what about Duncan’s mother? You really don’t know what happened between her and Duncan’s father?” I asked.
“Duncan’s parents were in a complicated relationship, because Duncan’s father was poor and our father didn’t approve of him at first.. I don’t know what happened between my father and Duncan’s father, but my father later agreed to the relationship”
“Then what happened? Why did his parents got separated?” I asked.
“Duncan’s father didn’t love Amelia when he approached her, he already promised to marry another girl, and his initial plan was to leave Amelia after gaining fame from her, but he later fell in love with Amelia along the way and that’s when Duncan came in…but just few months after Duncan’s birth his father left and we didn’t hear a word from him, until Amelia received some photos of her husband playing in a park with two little girls and a woman who seemed to be their mother”
I frowned as I felt anger erupting from the deepest part of my stomach.
“Amelia tried to reach him but couldn’t, then she filed for divorce and came back to America to search for him, but unfortunately she d!ed the very day she came”
From her story, I can tell Duncan’s father didn’t just leave, something must have made him leave.
“Who’s Duncan’s father? And who’s the woman he first proposed to?” I asked.
This is the most important question, we can get to the root of everything if only we know who Duncan’s father is, or who the other woman is.
“I’ll personally tell Duncan who his father is when we get home, but I don’t know who the woman is”
“But you said Duncan’s mom received a photo… ” I trailed off.
“Her back was facing the camera”
“Oh”
Then I leaned back on my seat, wondering why Duncan’s father left after he’s fallen in love with his wife (Duncan’s mother).
And what’s the deal Duncan’s father had with his grandfather, before he (Duncan’s father) was accepted into the family?
