“It’s magic. My girlfriend – Hathor – was pregnant for me. She’s the same lady your daughter had an encounter with – the one who ended up dead.
“She knew she was going to die and to protect the baby, she passed it on to your daughter, and that’s the reason…right now, your daughter’s pregnant,” he explained, and mom kept silent.
Then, she chuckled.
“Is this some kind of joke or what?” She asked.
“Are you trying to defend yourself for being involved with my daughter?”
“He’s not, mom,” I said ruefully.
“Please, you need to believe this. It’s the truth. I swear with my life, mom. I’ll never lie to you.
I’m still a vrgin, and this baby was passed on to me through magic. Please believe me.”
She gave me a long intense stare and moved away from us.
“So, you’re trying to tell me…my daughter’s carrying somebody else’s child?” She asked without looking at us.
“Yes – and she’ll need to come with me to Egypt,” the prince said, and I flinched.
“What? What are you talking about?” I demanded, hoping it was a joke.
“I can’t leave you down here with my baby. And I also can’t stay down here with you because I’m a prince and have obligations. So, I need to take you with me,” he replied.
“What?? That’s…totally insane. I mean, you can’t just come out of nowhere and try to take me with you.
First, your girlfriend made me pregnant and now, you want to take me away with you to a strange place. I simply…”
“Zoey!” Mum called, more like in a mutter, and I turned to look at her.
“Come with me,” she added and started walking away, and I gulped nervously and followed her behind.
She took me to my room, and I shut the door as we entered.
“Mum…”
“If you’re really telling me the truth,” she cut me off. “If really this baby isn’t yours, then I want you to go with him.
Follow him to Egypt, and once you’ve given birth, you come back home,” she said, making me flinch.
What?
“Mum?” I scoffed. “What are you saying?”
“You heard me clearly, Zoey. Go with him and give them their child, and when you’re done, you come home and continue your life as a normal teenage girl.
I really can’t stay here and watch you harbor another woman’s child.”
“So, you’re just gonna send me away? Send me away like I mean nothing to you for the nineteen years we’ve been together?”
She sighed and moved away from me.
“Please mum, don’t push me away,” I whimpered.
“Well, what do you expect me to do, Zoey?” She snapped back at me.
“This wasn’t the way I planned on accepting my first grandchild.
This isn’t my grandchild. So, what do you want me to do? Accept someone else’s baby?
“Please, stop making this any more difficult for me. Pack your things and go with him.
And as soon as you’ve given birth, I’ll be waiting for you here at home.” She wiped the tear that rolled down her cheek and left.
I wept as I stood in front of the mirror, my hands on my tummy.
Oh God! I can’t believe I’m doing this. I can’t believe this is really happening. I’m leaving for Egypt.
I gave my tummy a light squeeze.
