CHAPTER 26
Martha and Diana sat in Martha’s living room watching TV after Abby had gone to bed
“So Diana have you made up your mind on what you are going to do”
Marty asked curiously chewing her nails
“About what”
“Going to The conference in Abuja”
“Ohh that! I haven’t really thought about it”
“But you know you have to come up with a decision, Monday is just around the corner”
“I know Marty but I can’t let that ruin my weekend, my crazy boss is probably somewhere enjoying her weekend so why should I drown myself trying to figure work out on a weekend.
Abeg she can spring as many crazy invitations at me I don’t have to bombard myself with that unending circle of madness. This is a weekend and am not going to spend it thinking about work”
“Have you spoken to Jimi about it”
“What has Jimi got to do with this”
“I mean he’s your boyfriend and he got you The job”
“He did but I don’t think I have to give him a daily report about my work life. It is my business and I’m going to handle it myself”
“Okay…. but why are you acting so defensive. It’s not a crime for him to know”
“I never said it was a crime , I just don’t want him involved with my work, he did his part he got me the job now it’s up to me to keep it”
“He really should be involved, I mean if you are thinking of quitting your job you should at least have a backup plan or something”
“Am not going to quit, I just haven’t made a decision yet Marty. Your pressure is almost as worse as my boss” she scoffs
“Am just being realistic, you are not taking this serious and it’s not exactly debatable in my own opinion.
If your boss says you are going somewhere to represent the company you are going there’s no two way about it. I don’t understand why you are fighting it”
“I feel she’s intentionally trying to frustrate me, am I just suppose to just let her boss me around”
“Yeah that’s why she’s the boss, take the sentiment out of it, exclude the fact that she’s pretty young and arrogant.
She is your boss, so unless you have a pretty good offer laid back somewhere I suggest you take this seriously. You know how long it took you to get a good job. Don’t mess with it Didi”
Marty speaks frankly
“I’ll figure something out, but honestly I can not give in to that ?poilt pompous annoying overly entitled sophisticated lady. Am sure she is doing this just to push me to my limits, her ways are really twisted, atimes if you don’t bark back it makes you look like a fool”
“I know, I mean from all have heard she’s the crazy kind but what are you going to do she’s the boss and she gives the order, at the moment you don’t have much of a choice”
“I know but there’s no way I can just leave Abby for a week, I mean it was different when I was around my mom now it’s a total different situation”
“Wait! Are you trying to say Abby cannot stay with me……is that the point”
“What are you saying Marty “Diana giggles
” of course not that’s far from the point”
“Then what’s the point, because the way I see it you are just coming up with excuses to cover your real problem. Do you think I cannot look after Abby for a week”
“Gosh No! You are getting this wrong, you are Abby’s Godmother why will I not trust you, there’s no one else I’d rather Abby stay with. ”
“Then why are you giving the excuse that you don’t want to live her alone, am I a stranger. Am I completely clueless about taking care of a child”
“Goodness Marty, where are you taking this to I honestly didn’t mean it that way. You have been taking care of Abby since we got to Lagos. You have relieved me a great deal. Even if I don’t acknowledge it as often as I should, am sorry but you are my best friend Marty the only person that has been there’for me since I got to Lagos. The only reason I made that statement is because I just didn’t want you to have to go through that burden of having to look after my daughter all the time over the excuse of some work. You need your own time too, you need to live your life too. It doesn’t always have to revolve around babysitting me and Abby and it shouldn’t always be like that”
“But am not complaining, you know how shitty my life is at the moment. Is not like I do so many things for now, if am not at work am either here or at your place. Where else could I possibly go”
“Well that’s about to change, The last time I spoke to Philip he complained about not having spending time together which almost destroyed your relationship, because you didn’t have any idea he was going to ask you out… I just want you to live your life Marty. Have fun and be free ”
“Well you are a part of my life, you and Abby I don’t see any reason why taking care of Abby will be a problem. Even Philip knows about my obligations towards you both and he understands because he loves her too.. you know that. Abby can not stand in the way of my relationship with Philip and so can Philip not stand in the way of my relationship with Abby..if I wasn’t so clingy I might never have had the opportunity to even get to know Philip not to talk of a having a relationship with him, so living my life includes looking after Abby too. It’s our shared responsibility”
Diana wipes off a tear
“you are so amazing do you know that. I really don’t know what to do without you”
Martha throw her arms around her
” you are amazing too Didi in more ways than you can imagine and we’re here for each other don’t you ever forget that. so if you want to go don’t worry about Abby I’ll take good care of her… it’s just a week,. We’ll Miss you but we’ll survive , Abby will understand that mommy has to work”
“Oh Martha, you are one of life’s finest gift to me. I don’t know what have done to deserve such an amazing friend and sister. What would I have done without you”
“Absolutely nothing. ”
they giggled
“So what are you going to do about work, how are you going to manage the routine”
“The same as usual, Abby will go for the summer coaching and I’ll pick her up after my shift, Don’t worry that’s the easy part”
“Thank you Marty, you are indeed a God sent”
“Now we have a news bomb for your boss
She’ll nearly have an heart attack, She wouldn’t expect you to agree to it after throwing tantrums”
They burst into laughter
”Go and live a little Diana, am really happy you are with Jimi now and your work though you have a shity boss you get to experience life afresh away from all my troubles and the pain in your past. This is good, we are indeed headed in a right direction”
Diana wish she could say true to all that.
But at the moment they are having a positive moment,it will be wrong for her to express her reservation about her current relationship

Jimi organized a little dinner with his sister, last night he had called her and decided it was time to call it truce with his sister. After they had an heart to heart talk yesterday he decided to take her out today
She was already there when Jimi strolled in, she was dressed in jeans and a Fancy top looking quite simple which was very unlike her.
Simi was a lot of things, sweet and down to earth but she can be persistent and rude, which was why they always had a really rough relationship
“Hey sis..” Jimi says as he hug her
“Hey brother.. you look handsome as always”
“You are not so bad yourself”
“Thanks…..”
“I’m glad you came,I hope I didn’t delay you”
“Not at all, I just got here”
“I’ll make the order” Jimi choose from the menu, he already know his sister is a fish addicted and the reason she suggested this place is to eat is because of their whole grinned croaker fish, he added basmati rice on the side and fried plantain. Then he got same for himself
“How was your day”
“Pretty tense but it getting better now that I get to see my baby sister ”
“Am far from a baby dude you might wanna add grown-up woman to that sentence”
“Yeah I can see that, how’s Nancy…I hope she’s doing okay”
“She’s fine…. but I don’t want to talk about her, I don’t think she’ll appreciate being talked about either”
“Yeah it’s okay, I get it”
“But I do wanna talk about you. How are you are you still staying at your friend’s or is it your colleague’s place at that remote estate”
“Yeah, am still there”
“and it’s still okay for you”
“Yes Simi it is, I wished I had moved out sooner” he admitted
“Woops, mom won’t like the sound of that, she’s still hoping you’d show up one day at the house expressing your regret for leaving the house”
“Well tell her not to bank on it, I have no intention of coming to that house”
The food arrived and Simi rubs her palm together ready to bounce on it.
Jimi smiled, His sister always had the thrill for good food, but she hates to admit she’s a foodie
“You know with Dad coming home soon he is going to wonder why you left the house , so maybe you can just come back home and stay for awhile”
Jimi smiles softly
“no Simi, I don’t have to go home to pretend like nothing ever happened. I moved out maybe in the wrong way but it was a good thing, I don’t have any regrets whatsoever and when Dad comes I’ll gladly explain things to him”
“Is this about Mom, or are you still angry about the whole thing with my friend”
“No Diana of course not” he called her Diana without realizing it
“Diana, who’s Diana”
“What!” He couldn’t believe that just slipped out if his mouth
“You just called me Diana”
“Oh I did,it must have slipped am sorry”
She raised a brow
“So is Diana one of your new girlfriends”
“No she’s not, I mean Yes…she is my girlfriend, the only girlfriend”
“At the moment” she added
“Sorry am just joking I know it’s none of my business. And You don’t have to explain yourself,I understand it who you are and you can’t help it…if I wasn’t your sister you would have probably added this to your list of girlfriends ”
Simi muttered
“You think the worst of me… don’t you?”
“It’s not important what I think”
“Of course it is, you are my sister, your opinion matters alot to me”
“Wow that’s good to know, Anyways Dad will be coming home next week we’ll get to see more of each other….. I have to leave now”
“Really, but you haven’t even finished your food”
“I’m Good, I just have to be on my way”
“Alright then, let’s do this some other time”
“Do what”
“You know, hang out… talk”
“Stop stop it already Jimi, why are you being so nice….. it’s overrated….”
“What”
“When did you become so soft and caring”
“Big brothers are always suppose to be soft and caring”
“Not in your case. You’re only nice when you need something so what’s the catch?”
“What catch”
“Do you want me to help you with something Jimi”
“Just being my sister is good enough for me”
“Folajimi” she smack her lips together
“Yes”
“You are really outdoing today”
He scoffs and smiled warmly
“I’ll take that as a compliment. Thank you”
“Ok bro, thanks for the food and the good company. I’ll see you soon, have a good day. ”
She picks up her bag and Storm out of the eatery
