HER ADVERSITY: Chapter 21 – 30
By Obianke Prosper
Chapter Twenty Four
GRACE POV
I gasped as soon as the words left his mouth. I was surprised and kinda afraid.
Dylan spoked to me…. Again? Why? And what does he mean by ‘Be free with me’?
Wait….Hold on! I heard him call me puppy, right? Oh Goodness! Am I imagining things?
We both drank the juice in silence. The juice was banana flavored and it was served chilly, it helped cool my nerves down.
I drop the empty glass on the tray and then stared at Dylan but I saw him staring at me, at my face.
Oh heavens!
I blushed embarrassedly as I suddenly felt shy and uncomfortable.
I took my phone on my palm and began watching some boring comedies which I plan on deleting soon. I didn’t even know why I was watching them but I guess the reason was because I wanted to while away time.
“Planning on leaving?”.His cold voice broke into my thought and I stared at him.
Jeez! He really said that, didn’t he?
“N..o, w…hy would I?”.I spluttered, feeling nervous.
Why is he talking to me?
He remained silent and I shrugged as I concentrated on the boring comedies. When I felt tired of them, I went online and replied some messages sent to me by Victoria and a lot more of my followers.
He dropped his phone aside and turn to me.
Trust me, I could see him even though my eyes were on the phone. Haven’t you heard of the words ‘Be At Alert’? Cause that was exactly how I was now, being at alert.
“Why don’t we go to the library? Instead of spending our time in here?”.He said lowly but damn, his face was cold and expressionless.
Is he being nice or what?
“Library? Mm yeah, I did love to”.I said as I played with my fingers.
I wasn’t surprised that their was a library in this house. I mean this house is quite big and spacious and so, why would anyone be surprised if a library is seen in here.
He stood and walked out of the study room and without being told what to do, I stood too and followed him. We passed some rooms and finally we stopped at a door.
Dylan turned the doorknob and we both walked into the dark room. It was pretty dark, I couldn’t even see a single thing.
The word ‘kidnap’ rang in my head and my heart began pounding in my chest.
“W..here are you tak…ing me to?”.My voice shook in fear as I stood in alert.
“Chillex Puppy!”.He said and even tho, I could not see anything in the dark room I noticed the frown crossing his face.
Five seconds later, he turned on a switch and the room brightened up. I could see five shelves filled with books and seats, both tables and chairs around every corner.
“Wow!”.I squeaked as I ran over to one of the shelves.
Am a very big fan of novels but I hate plays, for no reason at all. I seriously can’t understand a word in it.
Smiling, I grabbed one of the novels I found interest on. It was a novel titled ‘THE LADY IN WHITE’ written by Obianke Prosper.
The name ‘Obianke’ sounds African and from what I think, African novels are the best.
I sat on a seat and Dylan did too, holding the same copy of the novels I was with.
I opened chapter one and began reading but sighed when I finished reading it.
Chapter one kind of made me emotional but Dylan’s face was hard to predict, I couldn’t even tell how he was feeling.
Shrugging, I read chapter two.

“Geez! This is gonna be hard!”.I sighed loudly as I got to chapter forty.
Dylan stared at me..
“Which chapter are you?”.He asked and I bit my lower lip.
Should I answer him? Gish! What am I thinking? It would be rude to ignore him.
“Chapter forty, you?”.
“Same chapter”.He said and I gave a nod.
“Between Davis and Aiden, who you think Arie should love?”.
Okay, I didn’t want to ask him that question cause I think it was a bit embarrassing but I really wanna hear his opinion.
He kept quiet for some seconds as if he is thinking, then suddenly he spoke.
“No one”.
“No one? I don’t understand. To me it should be Aiden, I mean he is Arie’s saviour. He saved her once in school, he keep her company too but Davis, Tsk! The only thing he knows how to do is cook and take care of the house. I mean why would anyone develop feelings for their housekeeper. That’s ridiculous!”.I said with a chuckle when I remembered when Arie hugged Davis when he cooked her favorite dessert, blackberry cake.
“I think the both of them aren’t good enough for Arie. Aiden is too soft for my liking and Davis isn’t caring enough. How can you feel heartbroken just because a girl tells you that she don’t love you? And Davis, even when Arie began looking gloomy and depressed, Davis never bothered to ask her what was wrong. He acted like he never cared”.Dylan said and I nodded, understanding what he meant.
Maybe he is right, both of them aren’t good enough for Arie.
We continued reading but when I finished reading chapter forty two, I frowned and stared at him.
“Geez! Arie’s mum is a….. What should I even call, maybe an heartless human? She behaves like a frustrated being, she doesn’t even care about her daughter feelings and then after divorcing her husband, after rarely visiting Arie, she now comes to prove what? Seriously, why are some parents like this? They leave their children to God knows where not caring about the child’s feelings, not even thinking about how they are going to cope when they leave!”.I voiced out but suddenly, a look of pain crossed Dylan’s face but it quickly disappeared as soon as it came.
He frowned angrily and dropped the novel on the table before existing the library.
I didn’t understand what I said wrong but suddenly, I remembered Mrs Skylar’s words.
‘Dylan hates talks about his parents’.
Wait… What?! Did my words remind him of his parents. Geez! What have I done?
