Ruby stared at Eli after the kiss. He was still in shock.
“Ruby what just happened here?” Eli asked after putting himself back together.
“Eli let’s date” Ruby said softly and Eli boost into laughter.
“You’re joking right?” Eli asked still laughing but Ruby still wore her serious face.
“Eli how can you laugh in a situation like this? Do I look like a joke to you…
I’ve given it lots of thoughts and it wasn’t easy coming up to tell you this” Ruby said almost in tears and Eli stopped laughing.
“I’m sorry Ruby but this can’t work. You should have been open to your dad in the first place and I don’t have romantic feelings for you, you’re just a friend to me Ruby”
“Eli you can’t keep up with the lies you told my dad. I know you have romantic feelings for me so quit denying it, I’m not buying it” Ruby said with a frown.
Eli sucks his teeth sharply as he ran short of words.
“Why do you think I have feelings for you?” Eli asked calmly.
“You showed me many reasons to think that way. The way you stole gazes of me, the way you treated me nicely than other girls.
You always welcomed me which you don’t do for other girls” Ruby pointed out.
“Don’t you think, you’re the one creating this all whole thing up because I never treated you differently.
You’re only saying this because you haven’t seen me with other girls.
You know so well, how I try so hard to avoid hanging out with ladies just so they wouldn’t misunderstand me just like you’re doing right now.
Ruby you can’t misunderstanding friendship for love, I’ve only treated you as a friend all this time” Eli said calmly and tears roll down Ruby’s eyes.
“Are you trying to say, everything I felt and witnessed was all for friendship?” Ruby asked as she sniffed back her tears.
“Yeah”
“Well I don’t believe you Eli. I think you’re the one mistaking love for friendship.
You’ve never had romantic feelings for a girl before and that’s why you’re confused.
Go out with me for two months, let’s see if you still think it’s just for friendship” Ruby suggested seriously.
“What! And why would I do that? What’s my benefits for doing it?”
“Proving your loyalty as a friend and I think that’s the only way to make me give up” Ruby said.
“But why should I be placed in a compromised position just so you can give up” Eli scoffed.
“When receiving love, you should be polite. And don’t just take my feelings for granted, I can go to any extent just to prove.
Like going to your house and telling your mum, I’m going on a date with you.
Meeting you at the lecture hall just to scream I like you Eli” Ruby listed with a smile and Eli stared at her in disbelief.
“I don’t believe you and I don’t think you can do any of this. You’re just bluffing. Such little threats don’t get me.
I’m not signing any date contract with you and it’s up to you to give up on what you feel.
Since you’re mistaking my actions for different things, I don’t think it’s advisable that we keep seeing each other and for the tutoring, we will do it through video calls” Eli said and stood up.
“What! Eli how am I supposed to cope with just video calls” Ruby complained and Eli left her room.
“What else am I supposed to do? You keep acting strangely and I don’t appreciate such acts.
If you can’t cope with videos calls then I will try something else but for the time being stay away from me till you put your act together” Eli said slowly.
“What do you mean stay away from you? Eli do you think avoiding me will stop me from feeling what I feel for you”
“Ruby you should mind your tone and language, your dad’s at home for goodness sake” Eli said sarcastically.
“Why do you care and more over dad’s not home. He went out about an hour ago”
“Huh!”
“Eli, I’m sorry but I can’t stay away from you” Ruby said looking away and Eli placed his hand on her shoulders.
“Ruby, don’t do this to yourself. Acting like your cousin won’t make me fall for you and I don’t have such feelings for you.
I’m sorry” Eli said calmly and hot tears roll down Ruby’s eyes.
“You can try developing it right?” Ruby asked in tears.
“I might not have much experience on love stuff but I know exactly how I should feel when I’m in love.
I don’t want to end up hurting you in pretext of not hurting your pride.
You’re so beautiful and a charming girl and I can’t lie sometimes, the beautiful look on your face whenever you see me made my heartbeat skipped but there’s nothing more than that.
And just like I said to your Dad, I don’t believe in dating” Eli repeated and his words got to her even more.
“It seems like you also derive pleasure in saying hurtful things to girls.
This doesn’t sound like it’s your first time doing it and for a second, I almost fell for it. You might not have feelings for me now but that doesn’t mean you won’t later.
Have a safe drive back home. You see” Ruby said waving with her fingers as she walked backwards.
Eli shook his head tiredly.
“Whatever” Eli groaned and left the house.
