A LIAR AT THE ALTAR SEASON 2: CHAPTER 11 – 20

Chapter 16

I pushed at his chest getting more furious than ever.

“You had no right to do that!”

“I’m his father, I have the right to know.”

“No, you don’t, Kayden doesn’t need you.”

“He is a Sanchester, you can’t change that.”

“He is a Simpson, that’s what is written on his birth certificate.”
I said crossing my arm.

“Oh, God.”
He grunted turning around, he backed me for a while just mumbling curses, he ran both hands through his hair and finally faced me.

“Why are you doing this? I want to be a part of his life. I lost one child already, don’t make me lose another one.”
He said calmly.

I wondered what he was going to do when he finds out about the other twin.

“I don’t care, I plan on bringing him up alone.”

“Is this your way of punishing me? Lying to me you are married and hiding my own son away from me?”

No, I had thought of the worse punishment one could ever give to a human being.

“Call it whatever you want, I’m done having this conversation.”
I adjusted my bag and turned to leave but he stopped me.

“We are not done yet, tell me where he is.”

“You don’t need to know, he is safe.”

“He is my son, he deserves to know his father.”

“He is not complaining, he doesn’t need you, besides I don’t even see you being a good father.”
My last words hit him, he moved away from me nodding his head slowly.

“I know you hate me but please don’t keep my son away from me, I promise I will be the best dad one could ever ask for.”
He said softly, the sadness in his voice made me feel like a bad person.

“I’m sorry that I hurt you but don’t punish me this way, please Chloe. I want to see him, I want to hug him and spend a little time with him. That’s all I’m asking for if you don’t want me in his life!”

“Just one day with him, that’s all I’m asking for.”
He said and got into his car, he drove off in a flash almost knocking the recycle bin at the side of the road down.

I released a deep breath and looked up at the sky. Things just got a lot more complicated. Tristan just made me feel like a wicked person for hiding Kayden.

He was going to tell everyone, Kayden wasn’t a secret anymore. Why was nothing going my way? Ryan was already a burden.

Ryan!

I walked home feeling devastated, I typed in my password and opened the door.

I kicked my shoes off and dropped my bag on the rack. I froze when I saw Vina in the living room wearing my burgundy hoodie which of course was from my closet.

“Vina, you’re back.”
My voice was shaking from fear.

“Ohh, hey Chlo.”
She smiled at me, it looked so fake.

“Hope you don’t mind, I ran out of sweaters and decided to borrow this from your closet.”
She laid emphasis on the last word.

“I can explain.”

“No need, he told me everything. I can’t believe you have a son, a two-year-old son!”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t want anyone to know.”

“I have been with you Chloe right from the start, I trust you more than my parents, I believed you when no one did. You couldn’t tell me? I thought maybe you trusted me a little even if you don’t trust anyone.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I wonder what else you’re not telling me, you’ve been lying to me all this time. You even went as far as to kidnap someone, who are you?”

“I was scared, I wasn’t ready to let anyone know.”

“Well, I didn’t know I was part of this ‘anyone’ ”

“I’m really sorry.”
She didn’t say anything, she stared at me with tears glistening in her eyes.

“You’re not just my best friend Chloe, you’re my sister. I love you and I will never hurt you. So, that was the reason for the vacation? I would’ve been there for you Chloe, I can’t even imagine how hard it was for you. You should have said something, Chloe. Two years all alone?”
A tear rolled down her right cheek but she wiped it away.

“I’m sorry, Vina.”
That was all I could say.

“I get it, the people you loved hurt you in ways you never expected but I will never be like that. You were there for me when I felt invisible and worthless because I couldn’t speak English when I came here. I have looked up to you ever since and I never expected you to keep this from me.”

She reached down and grabbed the duffle bag on the floor, I never saw that.

“Where are you going?”

“I need a little break from you after what I just discovered. I’ll come back when I feel less hurt and angry.”
She headed for the door sniffling.

“And you’re welcome, I got rid of the douchebag. He promised he won’t bother you or tell anyone your secret.”
She slammed the door before I could thank her.

“Belvina…”
I stared at the door not sure of what to do.

I remembered the first day I saw Vina. She was all alone at a corner just staring at other kids’ play. She just immigrated to the US with her family. Her dad got a work visa and brought his family with him.

Vina was Hispanic and she couldn’t speak English. No one wanted to be around her and they laughed at her whenever she tried to make a sentence.

I had seen her cry countless times at how unwanted she felt. It took her years to learn and I was by her side to help her, that was how we became besties.

I slumped on the nearest couch and buried my face in my palms.
How could all these happen in one night?

Vina was good when it came to threats, I was sure she used one on Ryan. I knew Ryan wasn’t gonna keep his mouth shut.

I stood up and went to my room, his things were gone. I was relieved and sad at the same time.

I laid on the bed staring at the ceiling, did Tristan deserve to be in Kayden’s life?
Will Kayden hate me for hiding him from his father? Was I making the right decision?

I groaned and kicked the comforter.

I hardly said a word to anyone at work. It’s been a day since Vina left, she wasn’t picking my calls or replying to any of my texts.

I wanted to apologize to her a million times, she didn’t deserve to be lied to.
She’s been there for me, I wish I didn’t keep it away from her.

The doorbell rang, I looked up from the Cashier to the door with a fake smile but the fake smile vanished when I saw my mom.

“Chloe, please.”
She rushed toward the counter.

I turned away telling Winnie I wanted to use the restroom.

“Chloe, please just a minute.”
I ignored her.

I stayed for a long time in the restroom. When I returned my mom was gone.

Adrian called me during my break, I’d been avoiding his calls.

“Hey, sorry I have been busy.”

“You have a son?”
That was the first thing he said.

“I don’t wanna talk about that right now maybe some other time.”

“How about tomorrow, I will drop by.”

“Okay.”

“Chloe, is everything okay?”
He asked like he could see through me from the phone.

“No,” I admitted almost breaking down.

“When do you get off?”

“Ten.”

“I will meet you at your place, I will be leaving the office late.”

“Okay.”

I was feeling so down, I tried my best to maintain a nice smile at the customers.

7:30 pm I got off work since they weren’t many customers in the Diner. I decided to visit Mrs. Porter, it was time to bring my baby home. Kayden wasn’t a secret anymore.

The problem now was money for daycare.

I took the bus, the guy that sat next to me tried flirting with me but I ignored him like he was invisible.

I stopped at a store and got Kayden his favourite candy bar, I could hear a police siren as I walked into the neighbourhood.

My heart thumped against my chest when I saw three police cars parked in front of Mrs. Porter’s house, few of the neighbours were outside.

I walked faster toward them with my heart at the tip of my tongue.

“She is the one.”
The lady speaking to the cop pointed at me.

I stopped in my track with a confused look, two officers approached me.

“What happened? Where is Mrs. Porter?”
I asked as they got closer.

“You are sure she is the one?”
The officer asked the lady that just pointed at me, she nodded.

“Yes, she’s the only one that visits her,” Another lady said with tears falling down her chubby cheeks.

“She was the last person I saw entering her house.”
An old lady told them.

“I’m sorry, what is going on?”
I asked as one of the cops grabbed my arm.

“You need to come with us to the station for questioning on the murder of Mrs. Porter.”
He said politely.

“Murder? Mrs. Porter is dead?”
I asked staring at the neighbours.

“What happened to Mrs. Porter?”
I asked trying to go into the house but the huge officer held me back.

Kayden?

“Wait, my son.”
I said to the officer but he dragged me to the car.

I saw two officers wheel a body bag out of the house to the ambulance, my heart sank. I felt the tears stinging my eyes.
This has got to be a dream, this wasn’t real.
