A LIAR AT THE ALTAR SEASON 2: CHAPTER 11 – 20

Chapter 18

“Ms. Simpson, I’m sorry but we have to arrest you for holding an individual hostage.”

“I understand but can’t you do that after we find my baby? Please.”

“Given the circumstances, and your paranoia; you will be arrested with bail but you have to spend 48hrs in jail before they can bail you out. If you have any relative or friend you wanna call to bail you out let me know.”
Detective Dean told me.

“Okay, please find my baby.”
I said more to Emily.

“We promise we’ll find your son. If you need a restraining order on your ex we can….”

“No, I don’t need that.”
I said standing up, were they seeing Tristan as a suspect?

I gave Detective James both wrists to handcuff, I bet he was dying to.

I did some paperwork and took my mug shot before I was escorted out of the room, I was taken to a cell downstairs.

“We’ll find him.”
They said to me before walking away.

Tears brimmed at the edge of my eyes as I thought of Kayden, was he still alive? Was his captor nice to him?

I took a seat on the cold floor and cried. This was all my fault, I didn’t know how Tristan was gonna react when he gets the news.

I spent my time in the cell in tears, I refused to eat anything and asked every prison warden that came about my baby.

The next day, I was allowed to make a call. I called Adrian and explained everything to him and he promised to come and bail me out.

I spent twelve more hours before an officer came to get me, telling me someone bailed me out.

I walked down the hallway with swollen eyes and a headache.

“Cassie.”
I looked up at Tristan, he stood up from the bench at the waiting area and walked toward me.

I broke into tears feeling worse than a few seconds ago. What if Kayden never gets to see his father again? It would all be my fault, everything was my fault.

“Hey.”
He said stopping in front of me, I moved closer and wrapped my arms around him, he stiffened at first taken aback by my action but hugged me back.

“Someone took him.”
I sobbed burying my face in his chest.

“Adrian told me everything, we’ll find him I promise. An amber alert was sent yesterday.”
He told me when I pulled away.

I nodded avoiding his eyes, knowing Tristan he’d put the whole blame on me, it was the perfect opportunity for him to tell me the kind of bad mother I was.

“I have no idea how it happened.”
I sobbed.

“I just wish I…this…this is all my fault.”
I cried.

“No, it’s not. We are going to find him.”
He brushed my tears away with his thumbs and put his arms around me. Right now I didn’t really care if I hated him, I needed the comfort.

“I’m so sorry, it’s all my fault.”
I muffled against his chest, there was no one else to blame but myself. Mrs. Porter was dead because of me, my sweet baby was missing because of me.

I increased my hold on him crying deeply.

“It’s fine, we’ll find him.”
He whispered rubbing my back soothingly.

I wasn’t expecting him to be nice, the Tristan I knew would have lost it and call me names.

“Please stop crying, we’ll find him.”
He stroked my hair softly, it was nice to have someone here, some assurance and a shoulder to cry on.

I pulled away after a while, I sniffed as I looked down at my old canvas.

“What did the cops say?”
I asked.

“They are still investigating, they didn’t find any footprints or anything. They told me the old lady was shot in the head.”

I tried to hold my tears back but failed.

He reached into his pocket and gave me his handkerchief. I took it mouthing thanks.

“Do they have any suspect?”

“No.”

What about Ryan?

“Wait here, let me have a little talk with the Sheriff.”
I nodded and took a seat.

Was Ryan behind this? Was this his revenge for what I did? Oh God, I was so screwed.

I brushed my hair back with one hand and leaned back on the seat.
Tristan returned some minutes later, we walked out of the building in silence.

Morris brought the car and we entered, it seemed Tristan still hated driving.

We maintained some distance between us in the car, the silence in the car was suffocating, Morris had to turn on the radio. I saw him smile when our eyes met in the mirror.

I took a glance at Tristan, he looked restless. He kept tapping his foot on the floor and groaning once in a while, his fingers drummed on his thigh.

I looked away, I knew he was angry and I was surprised he wasn’t taking it out on me.
If he lost another child, he’d never forgive me.

The car stopped in front of my apartment, it was the last place I wanted to be. The silence and million thoughts running through my head would drive me nuts.

I didn’t know how to ask him to stay or maybe take me to his place for now.
I opened the door and came out, we didn’t say a word to each other. He looked lost in his thoughts, did he even know the car had stopped?

I gave Morris a weak smile and walked to the building. I was really scared, what if Ryan was coming for me too?

I looked over my shoulder feeling paranoid, I entered the elevator with my heart racing.

I ran out of the elevator when it was about closing. I walked quickly out of the building hoping to meet up with them.

I bumped into a hard chest, I stumbled back from the impact.

“Is someone chasing you?”
I looked up at Tristan, he looked behind me and around the building.

“No, I wanted to ask if I could stay at your place for a couple of days? I don’t feel safe here especially with Vina gone.”

“Sure, I was about coming up to make sure you’re okay. Do you need anything from your apartment?”

“Yeah, some clothes.”

The elevator ride was quiet, my heart dropped when I opened the door to my apartment.

The place was a mess, things were broken and turned upside down. I gasped staring at what was left of my apartment.

“Let’s get out of here.”
Tristan grabbed my arm and took me with him to the elevator.

The ride to his house was accompanied by thick silence. Tristan walked beside me as we went into the house.

The fear was consuming me slowly, Kayden was not safe. This person will come after me, my head was in great pain and my body was sore from everything that was going on, I could feel my swollen eyes.

I climbed up the stairs holding on to the railing, my head was banging rapidly.

I paused on the stairs and groaned holding the right side of my head.

“Are you okay?”

“It’s just my head.”
He took my left arm and helped me to the guest room.

I laid on the bed and closed my eyes trying to block out the memories of this place.

Tristan returned later with some fast painkillers and sedatives. I took both and laid back on the bed, he pulled the comforter up and sat next to me.

“I’m sorry,” I apologized in a low tone.

“Don’t worry about it, I have people looking.”

“I should be out looking for him not here.”
I said and tried to stand up.

“Cassie,” He held me back.

“You’re not well right now, get some rest while I go with Morris to look around again.”

“You still remember his face.”

“It’s hard to forget. His picture is also on the news. We’ll find him I promise.”
He gave me a soft smile.

“Stay, I will be back soon.”
He gave my hand a soft squeeze and left the room.

I wore the red shirt and grey sweats Tristan gave me when I woke up. I spent the morning looking for my baby but no one had seen him. Tristan dragged me home when the sun became too hot.

I stayed in the room after taking a bath, I was worried about Kayden, I couldn’t imagine what he was going through right now.

The tears rolled down to the pillow crossing my nose. There was a knock on the door, I ignored it.

“Cassie?”
Tristan called knocking, he pushed the door open when I didn’t answer.

“If you keep crying then your head won’t stop aching”
He said walking to the bed.

“Do you have the slightest idea of what he might be going through? He is just two. What if the person is starving him or yelling at him? No one is there to hold him, no one is there to….”
Tristan cut me off climbing the bed, he laid beside me and put his arms around me.

I snuggled closer crying, my whole world was crumbling.

“We’ll find him, I promise,” he said softly.

I nodded my head wanting his words to be true, we laid in silence occupied with each other’s thoughts.

“I actually came to get you for breakfast.”
He said after a while.

“If you want it here, I’ll send Morris to…”

“It’s fine, let’s go.”

Morris smiled at us as we walked to the dining, the doorbell rang immediately we took our seats.

Morris left to answer the door, we heard voices from the living room. I recognized the voices, Detective Emily and Detective James.

Morris returned and told Tristan he had guests. I left with him curious to know why they were here.

They both flashed us a smile as we entered the living room. They looked surprised when they saw me but didn’t say anything.

“Hi, do I know any of you?”
Tristan asked.

“No, I’m Detective Emily and this is my partner, Detective James.”

“Found anything about my son?”

“No, not yet.”
